Ideal DVR screen

For a cable DVR such as the Motorola DCT-6412, I'd really love to see the main screen laid out as shown. 99% of everything I ever do with the DVR is accomplished with just these buttons plus the hard keys. I also think the current position of the play and stop buttons is backwards (from an intuitive standpoint), so I have put the play button on the right, directly above Fast Forward.

  • It just makes sense to have the most used buttons in one place, to avoid multiple swipes from screen to screen to accomplish simple things.

  • Maybe also the page up and page down buttons should be on that screen. But I don't know if they will fit with everything else. They'd be nice to have but the others I showed are more important.

  • I'm not sure about Motorola DVRs, but on TiVo units, the Channel Up/Down buttons work as Page Up/Down when viewing the guide or show lists.

This is blonging to make customer Page layouts and Sorting out the ones you don't need. If you willed, let your vote there and the higher the priority will come, the higher the feature is on the list neeo develope such features. Also they will redesign the complete guy and implement a lot of such features as mentioned here by Raphael.

  • Richard Moore  I agree that the default page is a little clunky.  I don't think Neeo will be changing this, but the option to hide pages will be coming in a future software update.  I have been using a shortcut page similar to your layout so when I start Directv I swipe left once to get to this page.

    • Dave H I would like shortcuts better if they didn't all have the same icon. They should have an icon corresponding to the function, such as the usual triangle for play, square for stop, and so on. The current situation makes it hard to find the one you want in a sea of sameness.

Richard Moore We already do have many icons on the NEEO App, I will check how quickly these could be added to the NEEO Remote too.

    • Dave H I don't think I could get the 14 buttons I need onto a single screen, using the fixed-grid shortcut layout that is available. It needs to be a custom screen. Actually I'd need 16 buttons if page up/page down are included, but perhaps Neeo could make those available as a long press on the hard channel buttons.

    • Richard Moore Patrick Your DVR remote has separate buttons for Page Up/Down, The DirecTV remote uses Channel Up/Down for this function.  I could be wrong, but I think that the DirecTV remote sends the same code whether I am watching TV or navigating the guide, but the DVR decides what to do with this code.   Your DVR remote is sending two different codes for these functions.  Since NEEO currently has hard keys mapped to mimic original remotes, I don't think they can do this with long press, a long press of your up/down button on original remote probably scrolls through channels no matter what mode you are in.  I am in a similar situation as I would like to map REW/FF to the Directional pad, but original remote does not do this, and changing it for my needs, would change it for everybody that uses the original functions of the buttons.   I do believe that a future firmware update will enable us to assign commands to hard buttons to whatever function we like, but understand why it is limited to what it is now.  As for my shortcut screen, I don't have all the buttons I need right now, but it is more useful than the default transport screen.  Image of my current shortcut page is in previous post.  The pause and stop buttons in the widgets are useless for DirecTV DVRs.  Original remote does not have a stop button, and the Play button toggles play/pause.  Wasted real estate.  There should be widgets that have REW/Play/FF and Skip Back/Record/Skip Forward,  I have attached an image below of what I would like my shortcut page to look like, but with current shortcut icons/text, it is not possible. I think putting text inside of a circle for other shortcuts and being able to name shortcut page in banner would also allow for three shortcuts per line instead of two, and I am aware Guide is available on the Menu hard button.  Basically, I need a source component shortcut page, and an AVR shortcut page for every recipe.  Sorry for rambling on.  Disclaimer:  Some of the above is not fact, just my understanding, but I think we will all get what we want in the not to distant future.

    • Dave H a long press shouldn't send the command on press, it should send it on release. Then it can send the correct one based on duration -- either page up/down or channel up/down. Just because the original remote uses a long press, it doesn't mean that the remote is sending the channel command multiple times over the duration of the press.

I think its called short/long press for a reason.  The channel up/down button acts just like a volume control on every ir remote I have ever used.  They send a continuous command for the duration of the press, and don't have short/long press ability.  I think Patrick has confirmed this months ago. Even if pg/up down could be assigned to release, there would always be channel up/down commands sent first.  If you need room for these on your first shortcut screen, as shown in your illustration above, you could remove the guide and live commands as these are already assigned to hard buttons.

    • Dave H I misunderstood; I thought you were claiming long press was interpreted by the receiving device. After rereading your comment I see that you weren't. My bad.

  • Still my biggest peeve is that I can't have A, B, C, Guide, List, Info, transport controls, Replay, and Live buttons on a single screen. These are the most-used buttons, and flipping back and forth between pages is a hassle. I created a short-cut screen that fits most of these, but the two-column grid forces the icons into a rather clunky arrangement, and besides, all shortcuts have the same icon, so it's hard to find the button I am looking for. I hope this shortcut screen is just a short-term workaround and doesn't have to become my permanent solution!!!
