Access to internal menu system for Onkyo TX-NR828 and similar

If access is available through NEEO currently, I'd value any guidance on how to make this work.

There are three different internal menus it would be good to be able to access:

  • there is a general access menu that allows you to choose which of the Onkyo's internal features / services you want to use (e.g. the FM Tuner, or the DLNA interface).  Currently you can access a single service by adding an instance of the Onkyo "Tuner" version of the driver - but no easy way from this (that I can find) to access the AVR's internal menu to change to a different service - presumably you have to add multiple 'tuners' if you want to have access to more than one such internal feature on the same brain.
  • a second menu controls the sound processing modes and video processing modes during use of a service
  • a third menu provides access to the 'general setup' features (e.g. adjust speaker balance for a 5.1 or 7.1 system)

As is normal for these postings, I'm able to do all these things 'out of the box' via my basic Harmony remote, so I don't imagine getting these features to work is hard - just disappointing that either they don't exist or are so obscured by the NEEO interface as to be hard to find.

As far as I can tell, Onkyo receivers have broadly the same internal controls across several generations, and so while this is specifically for an NR828, I suspect the same issues will exist on the whole class of Onkyo AVRs (and other similar products too I expect).

Anyhow, as noted above, any guidance on this would be valued.

  • I have an Onyko TX-NR676E and would be happy if the Menu/Back could also be assigned to the the Hardware Buttons. Currently only the direction Hardbuttons are working.

Andy Just one quick question - how do you access the menus?

You can add it to the shortcut screen or unhide the AVR and use it from there.

Andy OK - will have a go.  Are either of these actions documented anywhere?

Andy OK - sorted.  A couple of general observations - not sure where the best place is for them:

      • The Guide / Info buttons that appear when you add shortcuts are indistinguishable from those that appear for my set top box - not helpful as not obvious which you are looking at... some method of clarifying what buttons you are looking at would appear necessary.  For some (but not all) of the 'component' buttons (e.g. "sub menu" I think) the display gives the name of the device it relates to too - so clearly can be done but not done for all / or the main ones.
      • It seems that this is something that has to be done for all recipes separately - which is daft as it is the same AVR being used by each recipe: would make much more sense if the shortcuts were tied to the device not the recipe - so if you have a recipe that uses the AVR it automatically inherits the shortcuts for its internal operation
      • Beni's point about linking the AVR shortcuts to the hard-buttons on the remote is very sound - as you know that every recipe that uses that AVR will be able to use the hard-button shortcuts.  Please enable as he suggests.
      • Please document some of this stuff somewhere

  • Andy The Hardbuttons "Menu" and "Back" still have no functions in my AVR recipe (which was hidden by default). I have updated the device according to the guide

Can you please add them to the shortcut screen and check if they work there? Thanks!
