Cox contour cable box

I can't get the remote to work with my contour cable box. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • I will have our device driver team check if they can add it. Is contour the actual manufacturer? It may help if you could post the exact device type an model number.

Patrick  The box is Cisco Explorer 9865HDC High Definition DVR Receiver. The remote for the box is rf.

Sean Hays Unfortunately we do not technically support RF, so as for the moment we can not have this added quickly. Do you happen to know if the box can also be controlled over networks with and API / SDK?

  • FYI, I was finally able to get this work last night.  Had to first unpair my contour remote(holding setup for 3 seconds, then entering 986 code).  I also did a restart of my receiver after doing this.

    https://www.cox.com/residential/support/pairing-or-unpairing-the-contour-2-remote.html

I then used the comcast XG1 device which worked via IR.

  • I was able to add the same box without unpairing.  Search for "9865" on Add a device and add the Cisco 9865 HDC Version 8.  I can use it and/or my remote which is convenient since the remote is really easier for some things like DVR.  Not sure why the box doesn't come up when searching for "Cisco".  People are going to run into this over and over.

Carnelian even though they say it is rf only, it works.  There obviously is IR working in the box.

    • Carnelian So you're using this box with cox cable?  I tried about a half dozen times using the Cisco 9865 device, but it just wouldn't work.

John Nesbit John Nesbit I gave up a long time ago trying to get Cox Contour working.  You can either run the box with IR or with RF but not both, so you can maybe use the NeEO but then can’t have voice activation etc.  my wife hated it.  We ended up dumping cable TV for Apple TV and YouTube TV and haven’t looked back.

  • Michael Horton Carnelian Wow, you guys are amazing, thanks for getting that figured out! I think it would make it more convenient if we now add that box with the right name so that future users will easily be able to add it. I am sure many many users will profit in that way from your research!

I have assigned that task to the device driver team.

    • Patrick Last night I tried using the Cisco 9865 HDC device, and it didn't work.  I went back to using the Comcast XG1-P(can't remember if it's P or A) and everything worked fine again.  I also was able to get it to work while the X1 was paired with it.  I looked at the bottom of the cable box and the label said it was a technicolor 9865.

Michael Horton Thanks for testing that, if our device driver team needs more information they will let you know.

You are really using the same provider too?

    • Patrick I'm also using a Cox Contour box with the Comcast XG1-A device. I just recently got the Contour and they told me it's the third (or maybe fourth) generation of boxes labeled as Cox Contour. From the sound of it, each generation is a different device. Cox also provides different boxes depending on what level service you get (there's at least a mini-box, too).

My box says "Arris Group, Inc. Model: AX013ANC" on the bottom and "XG1-A" on the front. The Comcast XG1-A device works as a "stupid" device. It misses on some of the functionality the Cox remote provides, but it's good enough to get most of what I need working.

Provider is Cox Cable, Phoenix AZ USA

      Thanks for your feedback!

      Which functionalities are you missing?

    • Andy Beyond the "stupid" device annoyance requiring two (or three) actions to get everything to turn off....

      • Favorites require pressing OK after the channel is sent.
      • I haven't found any way to send the "A" "B" "C" and "D" keys that control some functions.
      • Menu traversal seems to always seems to require a few extra actions. (If I'm remembering correctly, the "Contour" button on the Cox remote has a different starting point than the Neeo "Menu" button.)

There's also the speech input on the Cox remote, but I don't expect that will ever work over IR.

      Thanks!

      - Favorites: This is fixed! The new data appears around 1PM CET. Please update your device. If this doesn't fix it, re-add your device.

      - A, B, C and D: These are included in your driver as FUNCTION A, B, C and D and as FUNCTION BLUE, GREEN, RED and YELLOW. You have three possibilities to add them. Either, you use the already on the screen present colored buttons, or you add them to the shortcut screen. Also, you can involve them into a recipe with adding them as a new step.

      - MENU: I'm not 100% sure what you mean. Maybe a screenshot would help.

      Hope this helps!

      Regards, Andy

Just back from traveling, so I could finally get around to checking this out. There doesn't appear to have been any update for the device I'm using (Comcast XG1-A with a Cox Contour). I tried re-adding the device with no change. The Favorites still require pressing OK after the channel is sent, so I'm guessing you either fixed a different device or I have some other issue here.

      Hi again,

This driver is especially made for your model only and should work perfectly. Can you try moving the brain? Thanks!

      Many thanks for your request!

Did you already test the Cox Contour 2?

      Reply Like
  • Hi Andy, yes I tried all the Cox contour boxes including the contour 2. They all attempted to find the device with the “Magic” search while I pressed the remotes power button and were unsuccessful. I’m also not sure I was actually turning the box off or just turning my tv off. These boxes don’t usually turn off but go to sleep mode instead. So if my remote doesn’t have a dedicated power button it don’t see how it would help. Maybe a more common button would help like Menu or play instead. Any other thoughts?

Here's a Live IR Test. Let me know if this one works!

The Live IR Test works the following way:

      1. Navigate to the Settings Menu in your NEEO app.
      2. Navigate to NEEO Brain.
      3. Click on "Live IR Test".
      4. Enter into the text field the following code: axmId3m3Eq
      5. Test the commands

      Thanks for testing!

So I did some reading on Cox Communications website. I was hoping to find some info about how to enable HDMI-CEC and instead stumbled across a blog where someone was wanting to use their Logitech Harmony remote to operate their Cox Contour 2 box. They recommended searching for Comcast Xfinity boxes as they used basically the same commands. So I added a new device and everything works under Comcast Xfinity instead of Cox Contour 2. Below is a screenshot of the specific model that worked for my situation.

    • Chad L.  Does the bottom of the Cox cable box have the XG2v2-P on it? (Mine does, but selecting this device does not control it.)

      Hi Robert Weidman ,

Yes, my cox contour box does say XG2v2-P but with E7397D28001 below it. I did not see any Pace labels on either side and didn’t look on the back.

Just a tip. Make sure your box is getting signal from either the NEEO base or the extended IR accessory. Mine is in a cabinet and I had trouble for a while even though the base is near it I had to tip the base at an angle sort of draped over another component for the signal to get to the cox contour box.

      Hope that helps.

  • I just got the NEEO, and controlling the Cox Contour cable box isn't working for me either.
    (Phx AZ location)
I tried selecting Comcast xFinity as well as the Cox PX022ANx.
On the bottom of the cable box is:
    XG2v2-P
    E7397D28000
    On right side of label:
    Model: Pace PX022ANC

Pace PX022ANC is not in the list.
Choosing Cox PX022ANx then tells me to connect a HDMI to it (this part is confusing. Says other end can be connected to TV or AVR. Connecting to Yamaha HDMI connection did not do anything)

When I get to test, nothing happens. Like mentioned above, the power function does nothing - even the remote for the cable box does nothing.
None of the buttons on the test screen do anything.

The NEEO is controlling the Roku 4 (and yamaha avr / LG tv)
Not controlling cable TV box kind of makes this whole thing pointless though

Robert Weidman so the problem that you’re going to have is that when that remote is “paired” with the cable box and has all the functionality like voice control, it is in radio frequency mode rather than IR.  The NEEO is IR only.  You should be able to hold down the Setup button in bottom left corner for a few seconds and type 987 and it will switch to IR.  Then maybe you’ll be able to get you NEEO to talk with it.  I haven’t found a model that works with mine.  Unfortunately, even if it works, you’ll have lost some of the remote functions for Contour 2.  Good luck.
