Hand Recognition

Where is it at ? will it work when Neeo arrives or will it be in a new release of the software or has it been scraped ?

  • This is a great question!

I am waiting with exitment to hear comments from an official person at NEEO. :)

  • Also quite interested in this feature - gone dark recently about it. Would be interested to know if it's possible in a future update if not present at launch or if it's abandoned completely?

  • Definitely interested in an answer on this too. It was one of the main reasons I backed NEEO in the first place.

  • Definitely interested in this too as this was one of the things to separate controls in multi person house.

It seems that it is build in the NEEO as you can see on the Build NEEO Video. Stop the video at 1min 48 sec and you will see it on the right side!

  • Maybe this is supposed to be a part of the unboxing experience... a "wow thing"... I mean, since none of the beta testers have mentioned this... either that or it doesn't work.

I'm hoping for the first option ;)

  • The public software release doesn't have this feature enabled, currently its only available to a specific test group. All necessary hardware is there.

    • Michael Distler If there were, it should be within the Software remarks under the latest Software posts. There are no, therefor

      NO.

Feature will come with a future software.

  • No official response on this topic? Smells like this feature was dropped because they couldn't make it work reliably.

    • sagdusmir why they then build in the hardware? it is still not the firmware with version 1.XX it is still 0.4X that means, not all features are build. When you see the number gets passed 1.XX then all features (announced) will be in and then they build in new features that were not announce.

Markus Mahr Why is nobody from Neeo replying to this topic? It is a perfectly legit question from the op since it was one of the usps and a short official reply would have been nice.

No palm recognition. No IR learning interface (yet). Do we have other communication methods currently available besides IR? I fear we will never see a 1.x release with all the features implemented that have been announced. Might be that you are one of those "lucky" beta testers that have some more insight. From my perspective this product is far from replacing my current solution (iRed Touch and IRTrans Lan) without any timeline roadmap given for missing features. I still have not decided whether I should unbox and setup my 2nd unit.

    • sagdusmir You don't see an "official" reply, because the Info is not other than mine. If you want, you can of course hear the same from Patrick or Emily . But due to the fact, that only these two are paied to interact with people here, there are two against all others, sometimes they don't reply if one other allready get in touch and provide info.

Don't know why it makes a difference for you, but i'm also sure, you will hear from them that all my replys are the actuall state. That doesn't have something to to with Beta or more insights, that has just something to do with the fact, that i'm very active here, reading most of the replys and infos. With a community so big, the right Infos are allmost spread over every single input and sometimes a topic gets lost from sideof Patrick and he don't answere. Thats why also others here can provide usefull help / Info and Patrick gets a bit of load aside of him.

  • I am truly sorry and I am honestly asking myself how I was able to miss this thread for such a long time.

If you look on the back of your NEEO Remote you sure have seen the three round dots on the back of your NEEO Remote. These are the sensors needed for the hand recognition. Each NEEO Remote is fully equipped with the hardware needed to get the hand recognition going.

We have disabled this feature in the current releases, even for the beta team, even for internal releases. This has two main reasons:

The hand recognition the way we are doing it is a huge technical innovation. This is not just fitting a standard sensor as you see on today's mobile phones, this is a completely new technology. The consequence of this is that we also had to develop the complete drivers and algorithms behind the technology. I am sure you can imagine that this is quite a challenge.

The second reason is the endless number of changes needed in the firmware of the NEEO Brain and the NEEO Remote since both need to support user management and setting rights to each individual function so that the user management actually brings new features which you can configure. In addition to that, the complete UI has to support that user management. This is mainly where we still have a bit of work to do.

During the development of NEEO we have decided to not put this on the highest priority since NEEO can very well work without this feature already. You all had to wait long enough already.

Once ready this will be an amazing feature, not only allowing customization and preferences for each user, but also handling child control and many more functions.

Patrick Any news on this feature? I understand that there would have to be some sort of multi-user support for this to be of any use...  but since it was advertised in the KS campaign you should update us on when / if ever we will be able to use this feature.

  • Never mind.  Not sure what this means.  Filed in 2015, published 2017, so I don't know if this is new info or not.

    • Dave H I don't think that it is a new Info, it is only that the Patent get to the final state. But nice to see, that NEEO was able to get this patented.

  • Quick and silly question....but if this function does not work and it has been just patented...why including it in the main features of the remote in the big webpage???

I don't believe it is a fair customer treatment describing something that it is not available.

In the financial services this would be sanctioned.

Just a thought having paid 300$ a remote.

    • Andrew C They patented it in 2015 back when they started developing of the Remote, and they build in the Hardware to activate it later with Software Update, why not?

Apple Pay is also build in in all Apple iPhones but not available in every country, but the infrastructure is there and the company only needs to update the software to activate it. So why don't do it?

      Like
    • Markus Mahr i tend to agree with Andrew C here. Apple pay relies on third party infrastructure which is why it's not enabled in all regions. Apple's done there bit and it's good to go. This hand recognition capability is self contained and fully within Neeo's gift to implement. They should be careful calling it out as a feature while it's not enabled

      Like
    • Dave Jewell I don't see, apply pay relied to third parties, you just need a credit card and can use it. But apple don't want to let the user can decide witch card to use, they want a special bank that must be used witch also have a contract with Apple about fees and promotional payment. So in germany the infrastructure ist nearly everywhere, but you can't use it,because no bank institute has a contract with Apple.

And so Apple have build in the hardware but don't let the user use it. Also you have build in nfc antennas and chips, but the user is not allowed to use it for authentication or pairing of Bluetooth devices, because apple don't want to open it for such thinks.

I know about what I'm talking, I'm an apple user for long times now, it doesn't bother me to much, but it is just a fact. Also I'm glad to have the hardware, so someday Apple maybe decide to let others use the function (as they do with the fingerprint sensor) and I only need new software.

Markus Mahr Pretty sure that‘s not true. The main reason why Apple Pay doesn‘t work with most Cards in Switzerland is because Banks like UBS want to enforce their own NFC- payment system. Like TWINT. Hence they‘re absolutely not interested in supporting Apple Pay. Of course others don‘t except Apple‘s fee-policy, I guess.

      Like
    • Mika Su Thats why the banks are making their own payment solutions, becuase they avoid the fee that apple collects from the cash transferred. Or they fully ignore such a new feature!

Markus Mahr excactly my point! So what I was trying to say is, Apple doesn‘t really care, what banks are offering Apple Pay as long they‘re paying the fees. ;) So, no special treatment there.

  • I thought this was a dropped feature to be honest. I was talking to a friend and showing the main website and i see it is still listed a s a feature of the remote. So Neeo should be careful here about people pre-ordering this item based on this feature ( I know it was a push for me on Kickstarter - but being a kickstarter I can forgive / understand changes).

On the flip side this thread answered for me what that sensor was on the bottom of the remote - had briefly looked before and not found anything. One issue might be that when I hold the remote I don't think I general cover my hand with this sensor - so what ever new tech sensor its looking for to recognise individuals (blood vessel patterns?) it might not be as passive a detection as they like? not knowing anything about it from the kickstarter and going off those images wayy back then I had always assumed it was some sensor along the sides that would somehow sense / record grip patterns / pressure / heat patterns of 'common hands' (much like my smart scales 'recognize me') - I was always curious how they had planned to pull this off.

    Like
    • Jamie You did oversee the three dots on the Backside of the Remote? If not, you allready found the Sensors. The both outer ones are near detection sensors and the inner one is a "fingerprint" sensor. So the Feature is build in the Hardware but is not active at this time.

  • Of all the features demonstrated, but not available at present. Hand/user recognition is the least interesting feature I'm bothered about.

I still don't see the benefits. What would "she" want to control, that "I dont"?

James Vincent  I kind of see your point but with the API you never know where someone might take this. As a first thought though how about custom favourites listed for the TV controls  or personalise 'radio stations'  saved for the receive / sonos or whatever .. kids only see gaming recipes.... only 'Dad' get projector controls or controls for all lights in the hose / security system ...

      Like
    • Jamie exactly this is the key behind the feature. You can customise the Lauyouts or buttons (when customising is available) and can give your Kids a limited access to the TV or also use a form of contigent system for the whole week, and then neeo stops working when your kid (or wife) picks up the remote.
