Spotify on Sonos - Selecting songs does nothing

Got a Play 1, and I have my spotify account all linked up.  I can drill down through my Spotify playlists all the way to the song, but when I select the song it does nothing; sometimes it just activates the play button instead on the song that's already queued up on the Sonos.

  • Hey Justin,

Have you linked the same Spotify account on your Sonos? If yes, please try to reauthorize your Spotify account on the Sonos side:

    1. Open your SONOS App.

    2. Go to Settings > My Services > Press Spotify > Reauthorize Account

    3. Follow the steps.

Let me know if this worked.

  • Yep, same problem here.  Spotify account is properly identified, and the Neeo does control Sonos, but when you try to play a Spotify playlist, the Neeo is creating links that Sonos/Spotify can't play.  They get added to the queue but they are basically just useless links.   Example shown in photo.  I'm disappointed that after all this time, and all the hype, the first piece of integration is so buggy.  Doesn't bode well.  10/10 for making the addition of Sonos/Spotify as a device so easy.  1/10 for the result.

  • John Burry I assume you are using the same Spotitfy accounts on NEEO and Sonos? Did you do the re-authorization described by Pascal ?

    • Patrick Same for me too, reauthorized both on Sonos and Neeo; no luck.

  • Yes, reauthorized.  No change.  NEEO sees the Spotify account just fine, playlists display on the remote properly, as do the tracks.  But when I try to play any track, the link that NEEO sends is garbage.  Another photo :

  • John Burry Justin Feinman Are you using a premium Spoitfy account? Do you happen to have multiple Spotify accounts setup on Sonos? Is the behaviour the same when trying to control Sonos from the NEEO App and the NEEO Remote?

And just to make sure, which firmware are you running on the NEEO Brain and the NEEO Remote?

    • Patrick On the app, the only difference I get is the pop-up to add to my queue, play now, play next, etc., but nothing happens when selecting any of the options. Firmware is the latest (0.45.6 Remote, 0.45.7 Brain), only have 1 Spotify account setup on the Sonos and it's premium.

Justin Feinman Thanks a lot for the feedback, that helps a lot. I have summarised and forwarded the information to our developer team, I hope I can come back to you with more approaches to get the issue solved by tomorrow.

  • Patrick has this been remedied? I have the same exact problem.  When I click play or select a new song the system does not respond/work.  I can only start/stop whatever song is currently playing.

  • I'm having the same Spotify issue. Only one Spotify premium account linked to my Sonos system. It looks like it's just sending the wrong information to Sonos, but I will try to post a screenshot when I return home. I tried the same remedies as described above to no avail.

  • yep, I concur, I have the exact same problem. I have spotify premium and only one account. I re-authorized Spotify on Sonos, I see now my playlists and songs, but when I press to play, nothing happens. The only difference between the app and the remote is that I get an error message about queues in the app. Here is a pic of the problem. Hope you can resolve this, as it is annoying!

We somehow need to find the common denominator in between all of you. We therefore ask you to provide as much information as possible. If you are not OK with posting these publicly, you may also send me a private message. The information we need includes the following:

    • Where are you located?
    • Are all your Sonos up-to-date?
    • Are any of you using Sonos Beta firmware?
    • Are you using a Sonos Bridge?
    • In which country is your Spotify account, US?
    • How many songs/playlists do you have in your Spotify Library?
    • Did you tried on separate Sonos devices or only on groups?
    • Is it now working at all or only when choosing specifically (like Songs, Playlists, Albums...)?
    • Since when do you have a Spotify Premium account?
    • Anything else that could be different from a "standard Sonos setup" in your case?

Thanks for helping us to get this solved.

  • Hi, I am located in the US and have a premium spotify account in the US. I have a couple of Sonos play 1 and one play 5. I can see my lists, but nothing plays and I trued different lists and songs and groups etc. I have had a premium account for years and my setup is quite standard. I am not using any bridge.

  • Hello,

I am located in the US, my Sonos are up to date and I am not using any Sonos Beta.  I have a US spotify premium account.  My two play 1s are grouped in the same room.  I can see my entire library but cannot select anything to play.  It simply restarts the song that was playing on my phone (Not through Neeo).

  • Patrick and team, I'm experiencing the exact same issues, but have not yet tried a single song, only playlists.  My details/answers are very similar to Anson, and I'm happy to take time to debug/troubleshoot...

Temp workaround: add Spotify playlists to Sonos Favorites.
Feature request:  Manage Sonos queue from Neeo?  It appears when a playlist from Sonos Favs is choosen in Neeo, it 'adds' to the queue and plays as expected, but what about 'replacing' queue, or editing queue, or shuffle/repeat of contents of queue?

  • Thanks to all your information it looks like we have a solution ready for the next release. Thank you all very much for helping on this one 👍 👏

Managing the queue from NEEO is being worked on. I will try to check on the progress.

  • Thanks for looking into this, Patrick. I look forward to testing this out when it's ready.

I had another minor feature request when using Pandora through Sonos that I wasn't sure was intended behavior - when I play a Pandora station, I can see the name of the station and the cover artwork, but the screen does not display in text the name of the song or artist that is currently playing. I have to open up my Sonos app if I want to see what song is playing.

Not a big deal, just thought I would point it out. Thanks!

  • This should be fixed with the latest release . Can you update and let us know if this works?

  • Still doesnt work for me. I can only control playlists I added to Sonos favorites. When I choose something (Playlists, Singles, Albums) directly from spotify it says "Cannot add to queue" when queue is emtpy. If I have a song from my Sonos favorites in my queue it plays this song instead of the one I selected from spotify. So no spotify control possible unless I added it to my sonos favorites before.

I'm from Germany and I am using spotify family for 1 year now.

With the latest update this feature still does not work for me either.

I use Spotify Connect exclusively to engage my Sonos Play 3 speaker and that is the only way I use my Sonos.  I do not use the Sonos app at all and have no playlists in their app.  Using the Spotify button with the NEEO does nothing other than load their playlists.  I get the same error that Giovanni gets when attempting to click and play song.

Before testing I made sure that the Neeo remote/brain were up-to-date and the Sonos app was most up-to-date.

I will be happy to help in anyway possible.  Just let me know.

Giovanni Ferraro Is the behavior on the NEEO Remote and the NEEO App the same? When you choose Spotify on NEEO, is your music library actually listed? Does "Cannot add to queue" error only appear when your queue is empty. I do think this is a different issue than the one that I meant we have solved.

Chris B Could you quickly check the same questions?

Could you both try to go into your Sonos App, and the make sure you have setup Spotify there? If you already have set this up, in your Sonos can you got to More->Settins->MyMusicServices and then do a "Reauthorize" on your Spotify Account.

      Patrick

I will make an attempt to explain what is happening to me...

When I choose Spotify on NEEO everything is listed out and loads correctly.  It has all of the standard Spotify options and it loads my specific custom playlists correctly.  When I select a song on the NEEO remote literally nothing happens.  When I select play now is when I got the error message "add to queue fail" and that was when the queue was empty or had songs in it.  It then added the song to the queue.  Also, if I select a song and this error comes up it changes the album art at the bottom of the remote to the song I select like it is trying to play it even though I get the error code and nothing plays.  The NEEO app nor remote did anything.

I started playing a Spotify playlist with the Sonos app and it did change correctly on the NEEO remote.  Once I started playing the playlist on the Sonos app the NEEO remote could have some control.  I could change songs within that playlist and move forward and back, play and pause. I did notice that the playlist I selected in the Sonos app that went into my queue with other random songs (I hadn't cleared my queue) was working sort of.  In the queue on the NEEO remote I could select songs from the playlist I added and it would correctly change between songs.  If I chose a song that was in the queue and not on the playlist I had selected it wouldn't switch to that song it would restart playing the song I was currently listening to from the playlist.

My NEEO remote died in testing all this.  The last thing I noticed is that if I add a playlist via the Sonos app it all loads correctly when I switch to the NEEO app and is in my queue.  At this point I can use the NEEO app to play/pause and change songs from the playlist I chose via the Sonos app.  If I try and change the song to something not in the playlist with the NEEO app it restarts the song that is now playing.  If I clear the queue with the NEEO app and get rid of the playlist that I had control over then the NEEO app goes back to the same error when selecting a song saying "add to queue fail" and I pretty much lose functionality with the NEEO from selecting anything.

Last thing, I added a Spotify playlist to My Favorites in Sonos and while I had limited time with it that seemed to work correctly when selected with the NEEO remote and app.

I hope all of this makes sense and I hope I described things accurately.  This is rather different for me to try and explain these issues.  Any other questions I will try and answer.

***The two pictures I attached were some errors that I got when messing around with this.  I had to power the remote down to get the "error, browse failed - invalid payload" error to disappear.

  • I have the same issue with the queue on Sonos. Does not seem to be any rhyme or reason how it works and why it sometimes plays correctly and other times it has an error.

  • I have the same issue with Sonos and NEEO app/remote. I get error saying cannot add XX to queue. If I already have something playing with Sonos app I can use play/pause. Also I was unable to locate my Play 1 when adding devices, could only locate my Play 5. Might be that they were grouped and Play 5 is master though? Didn't look into it since I had seen this topic and knew Sonos was not working with NEEO.
