NEEO is in BETA mode, but out of warranty soon????

I've been waiting around 5 years from first invested in this device, based on an amazing marketing pitch and great features.  The problem is, it still doesn't have the feature I was looking for the most.

HAND RECOGNITION - this is to help all family members in my house who have varying levels of comfort with technology.

IR LEARNING - not really necessary if the device DB is complete, but when the database is not, it becomes a major hassle to have to visit a forum.  I waited over a month to get a working device

CUSTOMIZING HARD KEYS - I have been able to do this on my Harmony for YEARS

CUSTOMIZING SCREENS - My first touchscreen Harmony from nearly 10 year ago allowed this

....A LOT MORE

The problem I have now, reading the other posts about screen issues, unreliability, etc....is that that the device is either just ending, or soon will be ending warranty.  Yet, the device is STILL IN BETA?

Will you be extending warranty for everyone who is still waiting for you guys to get out of the BETA stage?

    Hi  Sameer

Thank you for posting. What makes you say that your warranty is ending? Can you share a link where this was posted?

Outside of Hand recognition, IR learning, Customizing the hard keys, and screens what issues are you having with your NEEO that would be warranty related? Are you experiencing hardware issues?

      Jeff

Sometimes the screen goes 'dead' and the remote is non responsive (long button presses seem to initiate a hardware hard reboot).  I am also seeing others having issues that could be hardware related like screen defects (i have experienced a couple, but they have been rectified using similar hard-reboots)

However, my real fear is that NEEO is still not what was originally promised  Normally, remotes with internal batteries have a useful life of a few years, before hardware issues start rendering the device more trouble that it's worth.  I am eating up 'life' with a product that is still not 'ready'.  That is my biggest concern.  By the time the product is ready to the point that I can use it in my main system, as intended, I will surely not have any warranty remaining....making it unlikely that I would want to take the effort to integrate it into my main system (since I may need to remove it due to warranty issue(s)).

Some additional challenges I have with NEEO at this time are...

      - No Google Home integration (I currently use this integration to make life easier for my mother with my Harmony Hub setup). She just says the activity and it does it all. Neeo promised this, but I have yet to see an official implementation.

      - PS3 uses bluetooth...Harmony can control this...Neeo cannot

      - Amazon FireTV uses bluetooth...Harmony can control this via bluetooth, Neeo cannot

      - HDMI CEC requires me taking up one of my inputs...I can achieve the same function by using my TV remote to achieve similar CEC control.  In fact, I can create my own recipe for FireTV using my TV as the control device.  It will control my FireTV using HDMI CEC using the NEEO, but without using the NEEO HDMI CEC function, thus saving me an input.  It seems like there is a lot of effort going into CEC control, which seems a little like reinventing the wheel to make the wheel a little more round.  If you were to add additional functionality to the CEC control, then I would find it worth the hassle of losing an HDMI input...but currently, it's not.

      - Kodi integration was supposed to be available...it is sort of available via

Sameer Thank you for sharing your thoughts :). I can assure you NEEO will always do the right thing to ensure all our NEEO family members have a working unit. Let's keep an eye on the issue you're experiencing with the screen. Feel free to email support@neeo.com and one of our agents will happily assist in getting you a working NEEO Remote.

      Kindest Regards,

  • "Hand recognition" Is that possible? 😕

I even put sure Grip on mine to prevent the pretty thing from falling down 😮

Emmanuel Serebe Not sure if this was a joke, but yes, the device is supposed to have hand recognition.  It was supposed to be able to recognize multiple hands, and then adjust profiles/recipes/settings/etc based on the hand.  It was the main reason I bought this remote.  And it is officially not a priority anymore based on NEEO staff comments in other threads.

    • Sameer

I didn't mean it in a bad way but at least brought out a lot of answers 😌

      Regards.

  • Sameer 5 years ago? At that point NEEO was not even sketched on paper and there was no company. ;) Let me answer your questions:

You assume the device is out of warranty soon? Not at all the case! Even-though nothing like this was promised in the original crowdfunding campaign, we decided to offer everyone, including the backers a 24 month warranty. You are welcome ;) PS: We publicly announced so. So this should roughly give you another 12 months of warranty. (the crowdfunding units shipped roughly 1 year ago)
Hand recognition - We stated (before even shipping) that we will focus on other features. To set your expectations right: there is no guarantee this will be activated, the sensor is there for possible future use but we have a clear focus on other developments. FYI -We offered refunds -before we even shipped- to anyone. Keep in mind: whilst the device we delivered was very similar to what we had in the original campaign - things can always vary from crowdfunding video to the actual product. I personally receive a lot of products from campaigns that I back that look 100% different when they arrive. It's part of the journey. In our case we were able to match the big majority of our original designs and ideas, had to give up only very few (and went even more extrem than planned and added others).
Regarding your other points: Customizing hardbuttons: I'm pretty certain we will allow some level of re-assignement not too far down the road. If you have a very specific case you worry about please send me a direct message and I might find a magic way for you to do so already today. Customizing screens: check out the latests releases and release notes. We have added many options to do so and we will keep adding even more customization options. I'm among the beta testers of the coming release and I can tell you that much: you can look forward to it.
IR learning: This is a (among many others) feature that will strongly benefit form the PRO version we just launched. The PRO comes with the option of adding custom IR drivers. This is the first step towards the feature you are requesting. In the meantime (and even once the internal learner is activated) I strongly recommend to use the "concierge service" Andy and the team are providing for all IR codes. One last thing regarding "it's still in BETA" - this is incorrect. The public version you are using has nothing to do with Beta. Beta is a separate group of users that do a lot of testing before any release becomes public. Thanks & I hope this answers your questions.

Raphael   Personally, I can understand what Sammer writes 100%. The first thing would be to be honest with yourself and the customers, the product does not fulfill by far what it is advertised for. This is not about the original crowdfunding campaign but the way how the product is advertised and sold at the moment.

So where is the Bluetooth functionality extensively advertised? As Sammer mentioned it is still not available. This is called in Germany "misleading advertising" (Irreführende Werbung) and can also be warned. The Firmware is still 0.x so normally anything under 1.x is still not final or in development or Beta.

Missing features like a color picker or bluetooth are always referred to future firmware updates. For a customer, you don't know when these functions will be available to finally use the remote control as it was advertised. It would be indispensable from my personal point of view to mark those features in the advertisement, which currently do not work or are planned for the future. Furthermore, a clear time frame should be communicated when a customer can expect that the device can also be used as advertised.

    • Fonzo Why?, Why?

Did you write that? I was only trying to be nice to everyone 😲

"At Amazon you can read "all leading home control standards are supported by NEEO brain (wifi, bluetooth, z-wave, infrared, hdmi cec and much more)." and "NEEO is compatible with all known AV products of the last 10 years and also supports all cool new Devices on the Market. All major home automation standards such as bluetooth, wi-fi, z-wave, infrared, hdmi cec and much more are Supported. "

      Emmanuel Serebe

If you feel personally attacked somehow, then I can not understand that, because I did not refer to any of your statements. If you still feel hurt somehow then I would like to apologize for that was not my intention. The criticism is the way in which the product is advertised.

      Why am I writing this?
Because I'm pretty irritated with products and marketing statements that promise properties that are not there at the moment. Why a company cannot you just enumerate the things that the product can really accomplish at the moment? But always raising false expectations can inevitably lead to disappointment for the customer.

No, no am not bitter 😂 The English call it sarcasm (satire). I was just trying to highlight what you quoted in German 😣

Emmanuel Serebe Sarcasm is sometimes difficult to understand, especially when English is not your mother tongue 😬.  I'm glad that I did not hurt you personally 🤓

Dave H It was not promised in any sort of kickstarter list of features, but if you do a search here for Google Home, you will see some posts where Neeo staff have stated that it is coming https://planet.neeo.com/r/h4klbz . I also recall it was mentioned in the message section of the kickstarter campaign at some point, but I could be mistaken.

Sameer You can also use NEEO with Google. But since this is not supported directly from NEEO, you also need a home automation platform that has a Google connection. From the home automation system you can start any command or recipe in NEEO from Google, I myself use Symcon to control NEEO with Google, Alexa and Siri. If you want to use open source instead of a professional commercial homeautomation platform,  you will find it at openHAB , so you can also control NEEO via Google.
