First NEEOs arriving today - Update your NEEO right away

The moment we have all been waiting for is finally here, the very first NEEOs will arrive at your homes today. Please understand that dependant on your location the shipment may take a few days more after you have received your tracking number.

Update your NEEO right away

We want you to experience all the new features and important fixes of the most recent firmware. Therefore, please update your NEEO right away using an ethernet connection, which is currently required for the first setup in all cases.

Your NEEO will arrive with the firmware 0.40.7. The latest versions are the following:

NEEO Brain: 0.45.7

NEEO Remote: 0.45.6

How to update

After installing the NEEO App on your mobile device, open the app and follow the instructions on your mobile device to set up NEEO.

If you are able to connect to your WiFi throughout the initial setup, you may completely skip this guide and just follow the instructions in the NEEO app. After the initial setup, allow your NEEO Brain some time to download the latest firmware in the background. A red exclamation mark appearing on the settings menu on the top right will indicate the update is ready. Now to get your NEEO Brain updated, just tap on the settings menu, follow the red exclamation mark and the screen instructions on your mobile device.

If you are having troubles getting WiFi connected in the initial setup, follow all steps below.

  1. During the WiFi setup, tap "Skip this step" and ignore the warnings on the following screens. Don't boot your NEEO Remote yet, in case you already did, don't worry.

  2. Proceed following the instructions in the NEEO mobile app. After adding your first device (for example your TV) tap "Done".

  3. Allow your NEEO Brain some time to download the firmware in the background. A red exclamation mark appearing on the settings menu on the top right will indicate the update is ready as shown on the first picture of this post.

  4. Tap on the settings menu in the NEEO mobile app and follow the exclamation mark by clicking "NEEO Brain" and then "Firmware update". Start the update by clicking "Update". The LED indicator on the NEEO Brain will be blinking in red during the update process.

  5. Follow the instructions on the screen until the update is completed. Be aware that the update process will take 10-15 minutes.

  6. You can now setup your Wifi connection by opening the settings menu in the NEEO mobile app, tapping "NEEO Brain" and then "WiFi Setup". Follow the instructions to get your WiFi connection up and running.

  7. Once your WiFi is setup, you may unplug the ethernet cable of your NEEO Brain if you wish.

You can now start using your NEEO Remote. Just follow the instructions on the screen of the NEEO Remote to get it setup. After pairing your NEEO Remote with your NEEO Brain, your NEEO Remote will automatically start downloading the latest firmware. A popup on the NEEO Remote will inform you once the update for the NEEO Remote is ready to be installed.

More devices can be added by using the NEEO mobile app. Open the settings menu, tap "Devices" and then "Add a device".

Enjoy!

    • Niels de Klerk Hi Niels have appreciated your comments in these discussions.

Have set up and updated the Brain, but the Remote won't complete set up so will try some variations. Seems to always bomb out at the wifi step - so I might need to move everything closer to wifi to get it working.

Did a few quick recipes with the app instead (since the remote is not working yet) and discovered that, although most of my devices are on the network, it only seems to be able to communicate with IR for now. Still trying to figure out how to send commands over the network instead.

But yes, the design and package is impressive. Since I've had a Harmony for about 10 years, Neeo does feel a bit of a step backwards in the programming dept right now, but I'm assuming things will improve over time.

    • Wanted to note that everything is now up and running. Created some custom recipes and home screen buttons etc. so now everything is under control. Raphael pointed out to me that IR is actually better than network control for many CE products, and I'd agree now that I've wired IR cables and repeaters.

For those that might have Remote pairing issues, I've started another thread with the solution here:

  • Just received my Neeo (Oakland, California, USA). Woot!

Ok, I take back the snarky comment I made a year (or two?) ago about meeting deadlines. Water under the bridge.

First impression is that the packaging is very well done--as good or better than any consumer device I've purchased, incl. iPhone, Nest, Echo, etc. Super job!

However.... the engineer then overrides the artist in me and I realize I would appreciate eco packaging even more--all recyclable (no foam), post-consumer recycled material, no inks, etc. Save the environment a little and save some cost for the product itself. I almost feel like mailing the packaging back so that it can be reused--it would be a shame to toss it, and I won't.

Anyway, just my initial comment. Now I look forward to setting it up and using it. Thanks--so far it appears to be well worth the wait!

Andris From our servers it looks like your NEEO Brain has downloaded the new release (the Brain which is assigned to your email). Can you maybe just give the NEEO Brain a reboot to see if the notification is then shown?

What was not working exactly when you tried setting up your TV?

Patrick Yes, it finally the update showed up and I was able to upgrade. Just now, was able to connect remote to the brain too. Will try to set up TV again. One thing that I found confusing is that when I searched for my Samsung TV on the iOS app when trying to add it, the TV model was not showing up. I searched it on your support website and the TV model did show up. I'm assuming that on the app I have to select Samsung GENERIC_TV_1_ALL MODELS Version 4?

@Patrick  I was trying to add Samsung UN40D6400UFXZA. I selected the GENERIC_TV_1_ALLMODELS. Looks like that added it. Though I'm not sure now on how to add buttons to switch between different HDMI inputs. I found only `Input 1`, `Input 2`, `Input 3` etc. but those use AV1, AV2, AV3. On my remote it would be a source button that allows me to toggle HDMI inputs but in the app the shortcuts doesn't list 'Source'.

      Many thanks for your feedback!

I have just added your UN40D6400UFXZA. It should appear around 7PM CET. Please use this driver. From then on you will be offered discrete HDMI inputs. Please use them instead of the Source button.

If you still need the source button, we are calling it INPUT SCROLL.

Andy Thanks! HDMI inputs are perfect! I'll switch the driver when I get home later tonight. One more question. I have an older home theater system (Panasonic SA-PT960) and its power button on the remote is not working. So when setting it up I was not able to press the power button to get the IR signal. Is there any other way to get it working?

Patrick @andy Sorry  for confusion, what I meant was that the power button on the remote control of my Panasonic SA-PT960 is not working. When I try to set it up on Neeo, one of the requirements is to press on that power button, but since it is not working will that effect the set up?

Andris I am bit surprised, we never ask the user to push any buttons on the original remote, that would be completely new to me. Would be interesting if you could post a screenshot of that.

Therefore, no, it should not affect your setup.

Did you manage to go through the setup, is everything working? Let me know if you needer further assistance.

Patrick I was referring to this screen. After you told me that that not what you asked I realized that the action should be performed (pressing button) on the app itself (phone screen) and not the remote. Perhaps different wording on that screen would make it clearer. For me I know now, but if one user (me) misunderstood that I'm sure there will be others.

Andris Thank you a lot for that feedback! Basically that screen is only for testing the commands, this way you can make sure you chose the correct device. But you don't actually have to do this. The "TEST" on top is probably not explaining that well enough. We'll rework that, I have forwarded the information to our designers.

Andy Thanks for the TV driver. Got it going right away!

I'm having trouble getting Panasonic SA-PT960 working with NEEO. When trying to search for this device I see 3 different options:

      Panasonic SA-PT960 AVR

      Panasonic SA-PT960 DVD

      Panasonic SA-PT960 TUNER

None of them seem to work. Are these listed as separate devices or are they each part of SA-PT960. I have a this one: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882103394

Got it long time ago but it still does the trick.

The remote for mine has been getting iffy and I was excited to get NEEO since it was supposed to work with all these devices. But now looks like it's not going to.

      Thanks for your feedback!

Because of the way NEEO is made, we are offering every specific device part of a device as separate devices. This way you can do all the wiring stuff with the AVR version. If you want to watch DVD, you can add the DVD version. So you can have the useful transport buttons (play, pause, stop, etc.) or MENU DISC or LANGUAGE. And if you add the tuner part, you'll have access to our favorite feature, where you can add your favorite radio channels including logo art.

Regarding the non working device - I'll try to fix this ASAP and come back to you.

      Thanks!

Andy Would this also be the case with something like an XBOX...where I might want to use it as both a gaming console, DVD player, and a streming device for Netflix.  So I could have 3 device "profiles" for XBOX?  Is this already set up this way, that is, do these devices exist for the XBOX today.

Theoretically, yes, we could do that. But for gaming consoles this is not needed. We already assumed that not many people want to play games on their consoles with the NEEO Remote (I tried it once with a FLIRC and GTA V on PC and X360 controller emulator -  Kind of... fun). That's why we are already offering all the needed media buttons. Including transport buttons like PLAY, PAUSE, STOP etc. All you need for watching Media or DVD is already present.

Andy Ok, that makes sense in regards to separating them. My main usage of this device (Panasonic SA-PT960) is D-IN (Digital Audio Input) that is used for TV sound and AUX which is used for Chromecast Audio. Which one of them would be AVR? My main concern is the ability to switch between these two (D-IN and AUX). I no longer use DVD player nor FM tuner. Is it possible to get these two added? I know you guys probably have tons of work, and this is a one customer case, but unfortunately without this functionality my NEEO would not be only half way functional for my current equipment.

      Hi again,

Are D-IN and AUX missing? Or not working? Are there other commands not working?

As much as I see, you need the AVR only. But please be aware that AVR is hidden by default. Just add all the devices connected to the SA-PT and the SA-PT into the same room. Then just wire them to the correct AVR input. And all should work fine. But of course, the correct AVR input must be present.

      Hi again,

It will take some time until we will be able to offer your setup as an automatic setup. You'll need to edit the recipe steps manually. But it is possible now to make this working.

For the Chromcast setup. Just add your TV, the Chromcast and the soundbar and do the normal wiring process. All should be fine at this point. For the Apple TV recipe, there should be a separate Apple TV recipe. So add a new recipe with the following steps:

      - Add your TV again
      - Add the Apple TV
      - Do all the wiring
      - Go to the recipe settings in the app and edit the "When launched" steps for the Apple TV recipe
      - Add a new step - there add the POWER ON command of the soundbar
      - Add a new step - there add the correct input command of the soundbar
      - Navigate to the "Use volume..." step and choose use Soundbar volume.

      All should be set!

      Hope this helps.

Andy Trying to follow the steps you provided by my AV receiver does not have PORWER ON command, only Power Toggle. Not sure what do you mean by 'do all the wiring', all the wires are connected as shown in the diagram above. So I used Power Toggle in the recipe, but otherwise I followed the instructions exactly but it doesn't work. The Panasonic SA-PT has yet to respond to any command in any way. It doesn't respond to NEEO in any way, never has. So far has been frustrating experience because NEEO can not do a very simple thing - control a device with IR.

Andy Thanks for your reply. I really hope I can get this thing working and start to enjoy NEEO. Below are attached images of my recipe for Apple TV. One is with the steps in recipe and the other shows a message I get when running this recipe. During the process of adding AV Receiver to NEEO, right after it says it successfully added it and it shows few buttons for testing, none of them work. So seems like the main issue here is that NEEO so far is not able to control my AV Receiver (Panasonic SA-PT 960). And if it was working there still would be an issue with AV Receiver power control since it only has "Power toggle" and no separate options for "Power OFF" & "Power ON"

From this distance I was able to control TV, and Apple TV. I moved the brain next to TV and used the IR sensor extension and put it next to AV Receiver, as a result I was finally able to control AV Receiver. However I still do not see 'Power ON' & 'Power OFF'. 'Power Toggle' that is there currently is not very flexible.

Yes, it's still a stupid device. There is no discrete Power command available. But there's a chance we can smarten up your device. Is there any button besides POWER TOGGLE that powers the device on? If yes, how long does the device need to power on until it's ready to receive another command? With this info we should be able to get rid of the stupid screen.

Andy Been trying to set up some recipes but getting inconsistent results. TV would rarely actually powers on. Maybe 2 out of 10 times when runing recipe where TV has to be powered on it actually does turn on. It would respond to HDMI input change only when the tv is already powered on.

AV Receiver will power on (using 'Start' command) and will respond to volume change in recipe but will not respond when trying to set input (from AUX to D-IN or vice versa).

NEEO brain is positioned inches from TV. I tried to move it backwards and forwards with no changes in results.

Added some shortcuts for AV Receiver to test input buttons (Input Previous, Input Next, Input Aux, Input D-in, Select Source). IR extender sensor is inches from AV Receiver. Very poor response on all the buttons. Sometimes they would work and sometimes not. Sometimes when I would press it multiple times in the row it will take a while and then it will respond. Sometimes if I press on Input Aux it would switch to Input D-in other times it would switch to Input Aux. Do I have a defective NEEO brain??

      Hi again,

I have added a macro for the power commands. I would recommend to use the now included Power on and off commands.

Power on: START was added to this command

Power off: START -> Wait 5 seconds -> Power toggle.

This way we make sure the device is on when Power toggle is sent and it will always turn off if the power off macro is sent. The new data will appear around 1AM CET. Please update your device. The stupid device should disappear.

If I understand you correctly, besides the power commands, everything is working fine for you now, except that the commands are sometimes working, sometimes not? And this happens for both, the TV and the AVR? Let me know. Maybe I can schedule a phone call with one of our support agents. This way we can figure out if you have a defective Brain or if there is any other issue with the positioning. But first, update your device, clean all your recipes and try it again. After you did that, you could send me a screenshot of your recipes, to make sure everything is fine there.

      Thanks!

Andy Thanks for adding those macros! Now the Power ON & Power OFF work!

I really appreciate you going out of your way to make sure this device works, there are very little chances someone else will still be using this specific device that is quite old. Great customer support.

Back to the issue about inconsistency. I'm attaching two recipes I built that are sometimes working and sometimes not in full. Interestingly AV Receiver will always power on, however if it has been previously set to AUX input, when running recipie it fails to switch to D-IN 100% of times. Power ON TV will fail about 80% of times. I also included pic on how I have positioned NEEO and my devices. I tried to move the brain out to the front center at the edge of the white cabinet (right in front of the TV) with no improvement in results.

So currently still have 2 issues:

      1. Inconsistency in powering on TV fails about 80% of times

      2. AV Receiver fails to switch between inputs 80% of times, fails during recipe and fails with shortcut buttons for specific inputs 'Input AUX 1', 'Input D-IN', 'Input next AV Receiver', 'Input Previous AV Receiver'

    • Andris I dont know wat your TV isnt going on but I believe I know why the input selection doesnt work. Voelde you try setting the 9seconds timer to 15 and try again. If this works then try 14 etc etc untill you found the sweet spot. Please report this back to Andreas so hè can adjust the driver to your timings. This way the next person Will bennefit.

Niels de Klerk I just put timer to 20 sec and nothing besides Apple TV responded. TV and AV Receiver stayed off completely. Second time got response from AV Receiver - it Powered ON, however did not switch to the right input. TV still did not power on. I'm ruling out the timer issue.

Andris Did you try moving the NEEO Brain forward a bit? Sometimes a small change in the position really makes a big difference. Thanks for all the information and pics, that helps a lot!

When testing delays/timers, please make sure that you have the option "smart delay" turned off.

Patrick Any other suggestions? My NEEO currently is just another remote that can only do few things, actually even worse because those few things it can do it does not do consistently. I tried to run a recipe yesterday and it partially executed it, today it did not execute any commands at all on the same recipe. It has been more than a month since I got my NEEO and I have not been able to successfully use it without putting away all the other remotes.

Andris I would propose to switch the NEEO Brain and the IR extender so that the NEEO Brain is in the cabinet and the IR extender sits below your TV (in the middle). I see two advantages in this:

      1. The NEEO Brain has stronger IR emitting, therefore this should emit enough IR in your cabinet to reliably control your AVR. Make sure to close the cabinet for testing so that IR is reflected or even within the cabinet.
      2. You can place the IR emitter in the middle of your TV where the actual IR receiver probably sits, therefore I hope this will give you the reliability you are looking for concerning the power on/off commands.

Since the commands are working in general, I currently do assume that this is an issue concerning the IR signals not getting to the devices themselves. You don't see any difference in using the NEEO Remote and the App, right?

Patrick Ok, I'll try to switch them around and see what happens. However, currently the TV is not always getting powered on so to me it doesn't seem like a weak signal issue. I'll switch and report what happens.

Want to point out again that some commands feel like are on delay. If i press the shortcut button on remote for AVR it might not respond but most times it will respond with delay of few seconds. If I press one button multiple times then few seconds later those commands will get executed.

Andris Give it a try, if that does not work we'll have the device driver team do a deeper analysis of the commands affected.

Concerning the delays, could you provide me with an example which does feel delayed and one that does not?

Patrick I set up some shortcuts for my AVR and when ever I try to use these shortcut buttons they ether would not work or sometimes respond few seconds later after I clicked on them. These include switching inputs (AUX to D-IN etc), volume buttons etc. Switching input in the recipe has never worked.

Patrick Andy Guys, anything else I should try? It almost has been  2 months since I received NEEO and it is still not working. Looks like I've ran out of options. This is not only an issue with my older AVR device, even a few year old model of Samsung TV is not working properly. Ether my NEEO is defected or simply it is, as some would label it, a 'stupid device'.

Andris Thanks for the information. I have been sitting together with our developers and we have analyzed your logs (I do not have access to that myself due to privacy protection regulations). However, there is not a single error being reported from your NEEO, neither from the NEEO Remote nor from the Brain.

Can you confirm this summary of the issues please:

      • You are having lag on commands, but not on specific commands but rather random?
      • You do not see any difference when controlling devices from the NEEO Remote or the NEEO App?
      • No change in position of the NEEO Brain and the additional IR Emitter did do any changes in a good way?
      • TV powering on fails most of the times?
      • Your AVR fails when switching inputs most of the times. How does this behave when using the power toggle from shortcuts?

If I understood correctly your NEEO Brain is now in the cabinet and the emitter below the TV. Dou you happen to know where your devices do have the IR receiver? I would propose that we test a device separately, for example, your TV. To also make sure this is not related to a recipe it would be the best if you could add your TV again, no need to remove your other TV-Device, just add it again. Then I would open that recipe, and add the power toggle as a shortcut. Could you then test with that recipe if you can control your TV while having the IR emitter on the left of the TV, in the middle and on the right?

Patrick Well, now I don't feel like i'm the only one with that problem! Any findings? I tried your suggestion on adding a separate TV device and add some shortcuts. Performance appears better when the IR emitter is on the right side of the TV. For the most part they work, I would say around 90% of the time. No lag in 90%. 10% of the time no response from the shortcut command. So I can say now that I can observe lag only on shortcuts for my AV receiver.

Patrick It has been 3 months since I received NEEO and yet I have not been able to use it. If this is a hardware issue (remote sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, laggy commands) I would like a replacement. If its a software issue I guess I'll have to wait and let it keep collecting dust. But I would like to know. Now I wonder if this thing will ever be usable?

  • Okay, I just spent over an hour talking with Raphael trouble shooting my set up.  Here is my advice when starting out for this initial set of units that have the old firmware:

1- Plug in your remote first thing.  Mine came with just a little charge and it ran down fast trying to set it up.  Just get it charging while you do the rest of the steps.  They are supposedly leaving the factory with a 50% charge, but mine didn't.  By the time you are done with the rest of the steps, it should have enough to make it through any setup.

2- You have to plug your unit into your router to start off.  Go ahead and upgrade the firmware on your brain while plugged in.  It goes a lot faster and if you happen to move the brain in an area without a strong reliable wifi signal (this was one of my problems) it will be nothing but trouble.  It will take about 10-15 minutes (not kidding).  It will flash red for a while, then go dark, then start flashing white, then have a solid white light.  WAIT FOR THE SOLID WHITE LIGHT.  Use the app and check that the firmware is the latest (listed above) before disconnecting it.  It will just save you a lot of frustration.  Once done, go ahead and move it where you will use it.

3- Once you have your brain set up where you are going to use it, use the app and get a few devices set up.  This makes sure where you are using it has a decent enough wifi signal.  Use it some just to check things work.

4- Once you have things running with the app, fire up the remote.  When linking the remote to the brain, please note that there are different states on the brain, one with a fast flashing light and one with a slow flashing.  FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ON THE SCREEN if you are supposed to just quickly press the top of the brain or if you are supposed to hold it for 8 seconds.  Each of these puts the brain in a different mode.

5- Once the remote is linked to the brain, immediately go to the settings (small bars in the top right) and choose update.  When trying to update, follow the instructions on the screen (timing of any short press and long press, better not to mix them up).  This seems to work best if you put the remote back in the charging dock once you launch the update.  Something about being in the dock clicks things into gear when the update is having trouble.  Just bypass some frustration for yourself and put it in the dock.

6- Same thing as the brain, it will go dark for a while then start back up.  If it doesn't come back after being dark like 5 minutes, probably safe to hit power.  After that you should be REA TA GO ....

Apparently as new units roll off the assembly line, they will have the newer firmware and this won't be quite as difficult.  Just trust me on the above and follow neeo's instructions at the top with my recommendations and things should go smoothly.

I hope this helps all the new people get up and running quickly and with little frustration!

  • Alan Kelleher Which devices have you added? What we show on the home screen are actually recipes, not devices. So when you for example add a TV, an AVR and a Set Top Box, you will only see a single recipe. This is then enough to do all controls needed. Based on the response you give during the setup and wiring, NEEO will then send the correct commands to the right devices. So there is no need to see all devices in our opinion. If you want to see more recipes for other devices, you may enable them in the settings.

Would you mind opening a new thread for the "loose part issue"?

    • Milton could you do some tests?

i see that you have both lan and wlan connected (shown in your photo) could you remove your Ethernet cable? It shouldn't make any difference but you won't need it after the initial setup.

can you check with the neeo app if the IP address is still the same or if it have been changed with the picture you've added before. About screen.

could you check if your wifi router blocks bojour or has a bojour feature? If you don't know then reply what kind of wifi router you are using and the specific type

Could you fully power down your remote and turn it on by holding BACK and POWER until you see the connection wizard. Follow the wizard to be connected again.

if you could connect the remote to the brain and it all works, then test again by turning the remote off and then on again. If not then please report it back.

if it does work then please try to reboot your wifi router, if internet is back up again then reboot the brain. And test the remote by turning it of and then back on.

i know these are a lot of tests but I'm sure they provide enough information to figure out what is going on and find a fix.

being unable to connect the remote is new to me but I have quite some experience in how the NEEO technically works that I believe these tests could shed some light in what's going wrong.

This may or may not apply, but do you have multiple Wifi routers? Are you running the same SSID on both 2.4 and 5GHz bands?

If yes to either of the above, can you set up a new SSID on the 2.4GHz router and see if the brain/remote work when connecting to that?

I could power the remote off then on and it would sometimes take a long while for the remote to reconnect but it did, other times it reconnected faily quick. Woke up this morning and the remote was not connected to wifi so I decided to powered the remote off then on at that point the remote did not reconnect which makes me go through the whole pairing process all over again with no success. I then restated my wifi extended and it reconnected the remote to the brain. Not sure what is causing the issue in this case because I am and have been able to use the app without any problems. iOS app has been running smooth since day one.

  • My NEEO unit is DOA. The brain unit doesn't power on, the LED doesn't turn on. How do I reach out to support for a replacement?

Inderjeet Singh Could you quickly check if it makes a difference when you try the other power cable / usb-power-supply that came with it? If that does not help, please contact support@neeo.com . I will make sure they will handle that with a high priority.

Inderjeet Singh Did you receive their email from today? That was not the first one, so you should have had a response a while ago already.

Both brains are powered up and running. For the sake of less clutter, I'm going to post any issues and testing regarding setting up and using a secondary brain here: https://planet.neeo.com/t/63fmr9/multiple-brains-in-multiple-rooms

Patrick I absolutely love them! Most of our tech is black, so it fits in very well with our aesthetic. My cat was also pretty curious when she saw them at first. 😁

Vidya Travis Glad to hear you like them, I just saw the very first one myself about 10 days ago when I was in California. I now need to come up with a plan to get one too, which is not simple due to these being limited 😉

  • I received my NEEO, which includes the brain and remote. The packaging is very nice.

I managed to get the brain updated, after some tries. I also added a couple of devices using the iPhone App. I was not able to put the remote to work.

The remote... The remote is in a loop.

If we start from a black screen and press the “on/off” for 2-3 seconds. The screen gives me few seconds to put the remote into a text box, after the time is elapsed it states AFST is in progress, then it goes to QR code that means “FAIL” and then locks with orange screen.

    (See attached pictures)

Please let me know what to do to solve this.

    Best, Romulo

    • Romulo Pontual it looks like it’s in factory mode. I haven’t seen it before. I’ll tag Patrick , hopefully there is an easy fix.

Romulo Pontual Sorry for the issues you are having with your NEEO Remote, that is factory test mode. you should be able to leave that with the following instructions:

      1. Press and hold the Power button until the screen turns off.
      2. Press and hold «VOL Down» + «MENU» + «Power» (all together) until a Menu appears.
      3. Press «Home» to get the remote started.

If that does not solve your issue, feel free to send me a private message, then I will organize an immediate replacement.
