Release Notes “We Are Giants" (Release 0.48.35)

Friends,

First off we want to shoot out a huge thank you for all the feedback you have provided for the previous release. As a result thereof we can already provide you with a follow-up release today. We much appreciate you all taking the time to let us know what is important to you and helping us to track down causes of the issues you are seeing.

We also promised to do shorter release cycles and to bring fixes to you quicker. This release contains a couple of performance improvements and two fixes which we wanted to bring to you as quickly as possible:

NEEO REMOTE WAKE UP

It depends a lot on how you use your NEEO Remote, some of you have realized that the NEEO Remote did not always wake up when you did click buttons without actually moving the NEEO Remote. It did and does wake up correctly when you move the NEEO Remote anyways. This is now fixed, the NEEO Remote also wakes up and actually sends the command when not moving it and only clicking buttons.

SONOS WITHOUT SPOTIFY ACCOUNT

Based on your feedback, we quickly learned that starting the playback of audio on Sonos over the NEEO Remote from other sources than Spotify did not always work. This was happening for users who did not have a Spotify account registered on the NEEO Brain. This is fixed as well, no more need for a Spotify account if you don't use Spotify.

Have fun with it -and rest assured that the firmware keeps evolving fast. Thank you very much for being part of it!

Second, without proper Hue implementation and fixing the annoying power state handling, nothing is huge nor Giants...

It seems we are talking about a different power state handling ... I was referring to the stupid devices and the new assumption mode of NEEO, i.e. the brain remembers which devices are powered on or off and sends the appropriate power toggle commands. I had a quick look at the other thread on recipe transits and understand this relates to the way harmony handles unused devices. I personally don't use this feature of my harmony, meaning I leave my devices on and decide myself which ones to power off as I found there are too many conflicts (e.g. I want to listen to a CD but leave the TV on).

NEEO handles this somewhat differently as multiple recipes can stay open for easy switching between them (on the harmony starting a new activity implies leaving the previous activity). As far as I can see this is the only example where NEEO actually offers more freedom to the user (i.e. leave the previous recipe or leave it open + customize the power off actions) so as long as you limit yourself to standard recipes you can actually decide on the spot to launch the powering off part of a recipe or not. I already suggested in several threads this functionally should become available for custom recipes too.

The downside of course is that you always need another click to leave a previous recipe, so maybe the NEEO team could add a user preference on this "automatically leave inactive recipes: YES / NO"? Choosing yes would correspond to the way harmony does things and still leave the possibility to customize the powering off actions. No would be the situation as is.

Thanks for explaining that Geert Van Der Linden . The idea behind the way this is currently handled is that you have fast access to devices when you switch in between recipes. Some devices take a long time to boot, then it is better to not turn these off every time.

We have this on our roadmap, and I do agree that it should be an option the user should be able to set on device level.

  • Hi, thank you for adressing the remote wakeup issue! But for me exactly this is still not working after upgrading both Brain and Remote to this firmware version. I tried it with both the down and up and volume hard buttons. My TV recipe was active, just in case that makes a difference. Most of the times I saw this issue was while reading and navigating in the guide menu of my TV.

Does it work for the rest of you?

Henning What exactly is not working in your case? Does the NEEO Remote not wake up at all on button presses, or does it wake up but the first commands are missed?

Patrick Thanks for your reply. As described at https://planet.neeo.com/t/18g3t0/when-screen-going-off the remote does not seem to wake up, no command is sent. I just sent a mail to the support as Jeff suggested in the other thread.

I know this bug is hard to reproduce, but I am sure it is there, I saw it several times.

  • Something is aweful wrong here :

after starting my Fire TV receipt the status bar on the receipt page is no longer there.

With status bar I refer to the bar where the receipt is listed and where you have the possibility to turn the receipt of.

This happens on the remote as well as on the app.

Reboot brain and remote, delete reinstall app with no effect.

Daniel Sütel That happens if the HDMI CEC Power ON command is not acknowledged by the FireTV. When you start the recipe, is the control for the FIreTV working?

If you happen to have another HDMI cable laying around, you could test that for the connection in between the NEEO Brain and your setup.

Could you test if powering of the NEEO Brain for 10 minutes makes a change? I had reports from other users that this helped "cleaning up" the HDMI CEC Bus. We are already exploring why this is making a difference.

      Reply Like
    • Patrick HDMI CEC for Fire TV was working under 0.48.31 . Immediately after 0.48.35 installation the status bar was gone. Cable shouldnt be the root cause. Will try the reboot with longer non powered step for the brain.

Alexa has worked for me for a while now. I would open the Alexa app, click Smart home along the side then click “Add device”. This will search for new devices. It should find any recipes that were created by NEEO. Once you find the recipe you can also add a new group with “Apple TV” skill and call it say “Living Room TV” if you like. Doing this will allow you to say Alexa turn on the Living Room TV or Alexa turn on the Apple TV and both should work. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the quick fix update, NEEO. I’m already looking forward to the next one.

  • Hi thanks for the update. But can some tell me, why i have always the "Spotify" account on the Brain and alos on the remote? How can I remove this account manually and add some new account e.g. Soundcloud?

We will be adding more full integrations for other services, right now it is mainly Spotify. You can, however, add other sources to "My Sonos" in the Sonos App, for example, playlists from Soundcloud. Then you can also control and start these from NEEO.

Eirik Alne Would you mind sharing some screenshots of the screens where we can see the actual steps in the "power off" part of the recipe? I just want to make sure these steps did not disappear.

You can see these by going to the settings in the NEEO App, then choosing "recipes" and then tapping on the individual recipes.

Awesome stuff!  Even though the fixes in the latest release may not apply to me, I think it's great that we have this faster cadence of updates.  This is how you guys can disrupt the industry and is one of the reasons I invested in the NEEO remote rather than the 'other established company'.  Move fast and break things!  =D [Okay. Maybe not break things, but you get what I mean]

Jeff L Well, the wake-up fix should apply to everyone who has a NEEO Remote. but as I wrote in the initial post, dependant on how you use it you may not realize that one.

Thanks a lot for the positive feedback anyways, that motivates us a lot to bring updates faster.

  • Hi, i reseted the remote, devices, and recipes and started again from scratch. However nearly nothing works for my configuration :

    1) Sonos Connect : now impossible to find it in the device list ! (after the 0.48.31 release, it was still not functioning properly (music on a NAS, no spotify account) : lots of "lost connection to brain", takes ages to find a song, still impossible to see all songs...)

    2) projector phillips screeneo 2.0 : considered as supported device on your database. However impossible to simply turn it on (no change with the HDMI CEC) - so still a stupid device, and even the manual button to start the device on the remote does not work !

    3) cable tv Xoro Hrt 8720 (i use by proxy the supported device Xoro Hrt 8730) : remain as well a stupid device, cannot use the remote to control it.

In conclusion neeo remote is a beautiful object, but remains nearly useless for me, and i didn't even try to connect all my other devices as i think i'm loosing my time...

    • with 0.48.35, I need to add that even my media player zappiti that worked well before do not respond to any command on the remote now ! and the remote constantly loose contact with brain...

    • Daniel Desveaux suggest to request support to call you and go through step by step with the setup of your devices. I done that which fixed 90% of my problems and the other 8% which appear to be a bug in the database in 2 weeks. the other 2% (=fingerprint sensor is planned for the coming release). You have one person to speak to and he gets the things fixed. Its just little things that you screw right in the beginning which caused all this, happened to me. Agree a clear setup guide is requested since the beginning but they don't provide one...

customer service is excellent which makes the major difference to others. also in comparision to Harmony were you have to be lucky that someone answers in 3 weeks....

And it was the first remote all worked what was needed (untill 48.34...48.35 sucks), even my wife who complained about it first (and called me crazy to spend this amount of money on a remote) insisted to keep it.

They are also very fast and flexible to add a device. BUT it is faster to do it yourself which is my major concern beside the 48.35 release that I bought it because of the self learning feature and fingerprint sensor, which are not delivered till now. lets see how long they will need for this....

  • For the life of me, I can't get my brain to update via the app.

Clicking firware update in app settings tells me no updates are available... even though it's on 0.45.11-2017069etcetc

This device has been a major headache and such a time sink to just getting it working. Major regrets spending so much on it at this point.

Have you tried to reboot the Brain? Once the Brain has been rebooted, it give it some time. It will only show an available firmware update once the firmware  has been downloaded.

    • be happy it doesn't update.

48.35 causes regular crashes, heavy connection problems (nearly every time remote is lying around for a longer time (approx 1-2hours) connection gets lost) and shortens battery life extremly (yes screen goes black after seconds and I am 1000% sure its not a battery failure as this only appears since 48.35). Reported it to support already.

Want to role back to 48.34, hope it is possible as it is hardly usable like this. Otherwise I requested a interim remote with 48.34....not time for going through all the bugfixing cycles and testing...

nothing of this happened with 48.34, it worked flawlessly with 48.34 (and before) and nothing has changed in my setup. On the spot where the brain is located I have 867Mpbs, router is 4m away in direct sight with nothing between it and remote is even closer with 1,5-2m. router is on a fixed channel with nearly no traffic (scan regularly wlan around me, result is the same channel since 1.5years).

I reseted brain and remote, reloaded firmware again but nothing helps.

  • Zuerst einmal hallo zusammen,

First of all some appreciation. Neeo's support team rocks, they stay in touch and followup and help with the technical issues pertaining to the Neeo Device.

Now the sad part. No matter how much I want to love Neeo and my patience to see it working perfectly leads to disappointment. It seems I am going out of it now.

    History

    1) No FireTv support

    2) Awesome FireTv support added through CEC

    3) Had major issues after this upgrade, reseted devices , removed devices (Including z-wave) , restarted brain , add devices many many times. (Issue : AVR remote volume (+/-) not working with TV recipe.

    4) Awesome Neeo's team jumped on it (Jeff and Jose Ortiz) , Many many thanks to have it working

    5) Reseted Neeo Brain to factory setting, installed all the firmware and Hurray !!! everything was perfectly fine

    6) Now serious serious lag issue - this is now driving me nuts and is making watching tv totally impossible. Some time lag is up to 5 minutes.

Now imagine you press volume (+/-) - does not work , you assume remote is not working. Then to try to make it work you press power off on remote and again remote does not work or no response. You keep remote on the side and switch to use regular remote to start watching TV and Bingo after 5 minutes guess what .. tv goes off ..

It is like Neeo does not want to work, one problem after another. I am in IT and have lots of patience but at some point you just loose it.
