User Manual

My NEEO arrived without a user manual. Does one actually exist, and if so, how can I get mine?

  • Anthony Roper The current units arrive with a simple card saying: "Download the app and enjoy the insanely simple setup" - all further instructions happen in the app. Some users asked if we could not add a quick start guide or so. We agree that our very simplistic approach possibly went a bit too far for some user so we are currently considering bringing the detailed quick start guide - which we already had earlier - back in paper version. Thanks for your feedback. It's awesome to have you here!

    • Raphael Thanks. Your original idea makes perfect sense. I’m sure future generations will find it more natural to work their way through instructions within apps.  For some of us, though, a traditional manual is a nice option to have while the tecnological gaps shorten.

How fare are you with the quick start guide? A downloadable version would be enough.

Do you plan to provide some how to videos to the community?

  • Doesn't exist.  Shame as some detail like say a quick start guide with some tips and hints would have probably saved a lot of traffic and hassle on this site for these guys at launch

Karl Smith You can for example to a long press on the menu button on the NEEO Remote, this will trigger a different command compare to a short press.

  • Thanks  but to OP point with out a manual all these hidden features remain hidden untill we stumble upon a thread about them.

    • Karl Smith to be fair it's not like they've had time to put that together as they've only had about 29 months since it was supposed to ship, and they've been flat out ignoring their customer base, occasionally giving vague answers, never providing the information requested, and going to award ceremonies (which is baffling given they didn't actually have a product on the market).

  • Can someone explain the two signal strength icons in the upper right corner of the remote?  My guess is that one measures WiFi connection and the other the remote link?   This is the type of information that I start up manual should cover.

    • Edley Jones You're fully right. The Left Icon is the WiFi Bar and signal quality, the right Dots are the NEEO Link and its signal Strenght.

  • What can I do to strengthen the need link signal?  Is there a way to boost the link?  I don’t have a line of sight between the remote and brain.

    • Edley Jones Only possibility is to change the channel used and check if the links is getting better, in the current firmware the neeo doesn't do channel hopping (meaning it doesn't use the best available, it uses always the same). To do this it is required to repair the remote with the brain therefor do the following:

      1. Power Off your Remote

      2. Press Power and Back at the Same time

      3. Follow the FTUE Instructions provided on Screen and repair the NEEO to the Brain.

Sometimes (if the used channels is a high used one in your sourroundings) this can help, else if it works, it works, no need to have always full Power, currently only the Button (hard and Soft) are send over this connection. Software and other big things are transferred over WiFi.

  • I didn't even know there were supposed to be two icons for communications because for the first couple of days I only ever saw one icon there. It was only after have communication problems and literally spending HOURS testing things and searching the forum trying to figure out why I was having problems that I discovered there should have been another icon.

You don't know what you don't know, which is exactly why the product needs at least a basic quick start manual. Neeo's concept to "just use the app" assumes that the remote is working as it should be, and that's not always a valid assumption.

  • I could not agree more.  And, I dare say any of us who have suffered through the RCW (Remote Connection War) could probably write a manual in a day's time that would save a great deal of time and frustration for new owners.  Hell, if I were Andy or Patrick, I would have written it just to save myself from having to respond repeatedly to the same issues and having to give the same responses over and over!  NEEO has failed miserably in this regard.

But, this entire experience has to be put in the context that this is not an ordinary consumer purchase.  This was a Kickstarter project, and I have come to the conclusion that we are a massive test beta group in the field for ironing out problems with a new product.  Perhaps part of that test is that we, through our queries, end up providing to NEEO the points that need to be put in a manual, making this a secondary Kickstarter project of writing a manual?  They might be more clever than we thought.

Anyway, my NEEO system is working, and my six old remotes gather dust, so I'm a satisfied customer.

I'm fine with that for a new product, as long as the problems do get ironed out in a reasonable time frame. Neeo seems to be doing a good job in that respect, but over the years I've seen many products and companies fail in the market because the product gets 90% or 95% of the way to being great ("It's good enough"), then development work stops or the resources are reassigned to some other project. I sincerely hope that doesn't happen with Neeo, because with this type of product "good enough" for some won't be good enough for many. It would be such a shame because Neeo has the potential to be a truly great product, and it's most of the way there already.

  • “Manuals are for women and kids” 😂

First thing men do is unpack an item and throw away all paper and packaging materials. I never read manuals and with the Neeo everything is pretty much straight forward, and Besides that it’s fun to find Out yourself!

Alex B Yeah i am one of these people that immediately throw all the paperwork and packaging away. But with NEEO's packaging that would be a real waste. It's so super-well-made (and high quality too) that even i decided to keep it...
