Release Notes “We Are Giants" (Release 0.48.31)

Friends,

I’m thrilled to share today’s news with you. Within the next hours, we will be releasing the biggest software update yet!

This release has been shaped by the community here on Planet NEEO, in fact, many of the new features and improvements - including the most central change - in this release is based on your feedback. Raphael went ahead and wrote about the main changes in separate blog posts, make sure to check these out:

Stupid device? The Smartener is here!

Amazon FireTV support!

There is way more than that though. Here some of the additional highlights:

  • Another load of features and fixes for Sonos is included, lists can now be of unlimited size, Spotify works again for those who had issues after the Sonos 8.3 update and Instant Favorites can now be set manually in the NEEO App.
  • An endless number of UI changes like redesigned pop-ups, a new power menu as well as update notifications on the NEEO Remote have been implemented.
  • HDMI CEC has not only been heavily improved, we also added new devices like the already mentioned FireTV, the Sony PS3 Slim and Super Slim as well as the Google Chromecast.
  • Huge low-level changes for a generally improved user experiencing like for example new RAM management on the NEEO Remote.

Below are the full release notes for the ones of you which want to know even more. Also check out the Known Issues for this release.

How to update your NEEO

Once the update is available it will show in your NEEO App on the top right with a red dot and an exclamation mark. You just need to follow the steps in the NEEO App and then on the NEEO Remote. We have prepared a little guide

Be aware that it may take a few hours until your NEEO Brain shows the update, not all of them download the update at the same time, so give it some time. Little hint from me: Rebooting the NEEO Brain can speed up the download process ;-)

  • Congratulations to Patrick and Raphael and the whole Team!

This was long awaited. At all others that update today, take time and rediscover the NEEO. There are definitely huge changes implemented, not only for stupid devices!

Amit Singh You are right, we did change priorities a bit. Based on the feedback here on Planet NEEO we saw an urgent need to re-work the way we handle not-so-smart-devices. This caused a delay for NEST. It is on the roadmap and support will come for sure.

And again such word like "We Are Giants" (kopfschütel). I really would really be more modest. Even with this update, I still do not get the features you have been promising during the Kickstarter campaign ...

    • Nicolas Jene I fully agree. Small calculation. Firmware 0.47 --> 0.48 took 3 months. Let's say NEEO can be used with Firmware 1.0 (IR-Learning, Connect many Brains together, Palm detection, customise UI,..) That means an other 53 Updates multiplied with 3 months = NEEO will be ready to use by sommer 2031.

Nicolas Jene "We Are Giants" is the name of a band and I guess the naming scheme has something to do with which bands the team listens to? But yeah, this one isn't particularly good or modest.

So this means still not able to rearrange screens??? Then I dont see any reason to take the NEEO back out again to test the new firmware as nobody in the family does accept to swipe 5 screens to be on the only screen which is actually useful (Shortcuts) :-(

What I do when I want to go to the shortcuts is that I swipe once left, not five times right ;)

    • Dave H you are assuming he only has 6 screens. We don't know that. For my DVR, I have 8 screens. I can't always remember the order well enough to know if the screen I want is 3 swipes right or 5 swipes left from the screen I'm on. Hopefully, they will work on the grouping of commands for the next release. The most frequently used buttons are spread out over two or three screens, and I can only fit so many on a custom screen. It's a bit of back-and-forth just to delete a program from the DVR (as one example) or to use the Info command and go back to my main custom screen.

Sure sounds like it's only one screen.

    • Beni I agree that being able to hide and rearrange screens is a must.  Before NEEO arrived, I figured favorites page would be useless since I always use the guide to.  I did fill up one page of favorites and have found a use for them.  Since for now it is the first page that shows when the recipe starts, I can hit the hard menu button to bring up the guide, and then hit a logo to immediately get the guide where I want.  I very rarely use them to change channels.

      Reply Like
    • Dave H that's a non sequitur. If he has to swipe 5 screens in a particular direction (regardless of how many swipes it takes going the other way), then he has *at least* six screens. That's the screen he's on (if it's the one he wants, then he doesn't have to swipe at all), the screen he's going to (which he arrives at after exactly five swipes), and the four screens in between that he doesn't want. Definitely *not* a single screen.

      Reply Like
    • Richard Moore According to the original post, he has a single useful screen of shortcuts.  With the current state of the UI, this can definitely be reached In a single swipe when launching the recipe.  Is it right that we cannot hide or rearrange screens at this point?  Obviously not.  I am curious about the need for 3 screens of shortcuts for your DVR and would like to find out more.  I will re-visit your Ideal DVR Screen thread here https://planet.neeo.com/t/18kxj3

      Reply Like
    • Dave H I take that to mean he has one shortcut screen that he uses almost exclusively. He may have other shortcut screens that he uses occasionally.

I do not have 3 shortcut screens for my DVR. I have two. I also have two prefab screens and two screens of favorite channels, for a total of six. I used to have eight, but the firmware upgrade took two of them away.

I positioned my most-used shortcut screen, where I do 95% of my DVR activity, two swipes away from the first screen after power on. This works out best for a couple of reasons, but it does take me two or three swipes to get from there to the favorites. I mostly watch recorded programs rather than live TV, so the favorite channels are just used very rarely.

I agree that the ability to reorder screens would be good. In my opinion, a much bigger improvement (though specifically for DVRs) would be the simple addition of a few buttons to the standard transport control screen: the context-sensitive A/B/C buttons, Page Up and Page Down, Previous Channel, Replay, and Menu DVR. (It's been suggested that the Channel Up/Down hard buttons could be reassigned for Page Up/Down, or make that functionality available through a long press, which would also be reasonable and would avoid crowding that screen.) Such a grouping would eliminate most swiping altogether for that particular activity.

As Raph was already leaking a bit, the next release will bring joy to all of you which are discussing the recipe slides here. I can also promise that this will not take as long as the most recent release, I have seen it working already 😉

Additional customization options will then follow with the next releases.

  • Thank you to the team for finally delivering this long-awaited firmware update. I'm disappointed that progress with device control over HDMI CEC seems to have been at the cost of any progress with device control over Bluetooth, especially when all my source devices (3 of which are controlled over bluetooth) are in a centralised rack. I think I'll wait and see how others in the Planet NEEO community get on with this firmware before resuming with NEEO. I really do hope that the feedback gives me enough confidence to continue with this journey.

    • Dillon Moulder The developers doing CEC are actually not the same ones that are doing the radio stuff including bluetooth. There are certainly bluetooth support coming up for many devices. Just out of curiosity - What source devices do you own that you thought of controlling via bluetooth? Thanks

I have devices just take over if I have it enabled had to remove a pin from my hdmi cable when using a roku as it wasn't possible to disable CEC on it. I also don't have any spare HDMI ports on my Onkyo and my telly is is the other side of the room compared to my rack of devices. Can't see NEEO replacing my Harmony anytime soon

    • Raphael I explained so before - it's not just that one might prefer wireless controll over CEC for multiple reasons. Also in my topology it's just not an option: I would have to sacrifice (IR) control over my Elipson speakers which hosts the receiver and status LEDs (lightpipe) in a very small hole in the front and thus are VERY narrow angled. Lined up with the  TV at a wall (and the other equipment tucked away in a lowboard below), evenb the best IR emitter of the brain at 360° the speakers simply do not react reliably.

It's not I hadn't tried it up front already, but putting the Brain there just doesn't work for me. So, it's good to hear that you have stacked up the team to push implementation of native Bluetooth control.

Then, I just had an idea about a small, cost effective "smartener sattelite" that wirelessly (WiFi or 6LoPan) relays to the Brain for local status and control through HDMI CEC. That would allow to place the Brain freely and still enjoy the benefits of the efforts you have put into smartening over HDMI CEC.

Thanks

HDMI-CEC sucks.  Add native support via Bluetooth for devices like PS3 and FireTV.

Sameer It is right that we are perfecting the Sonos experience, it is one of the most added devices from our users, therefore it is a central feature.

We have employed four new developers this month, that will help to release the first Bluetooth drivers really soon.

What I don't share is your opinion about CEC, it is actually great if handled correctly. If you have a FireTV, give it a try.

Alex Bayer Raphael Good Point! I was really hoping to get a Neeo whitch supports Spotify with Connect or at least control Spotify on the Device it is running atm. , and not just supports Spotify IF and only IF you are using Sonos. There are a lot of other Devices - HEOS and Marantz AVR in my case - which would benefit a lot from Spotify/Connect. But atm. Neeo is almost useless for this Devices as it neither Supports Spotify, nor Heos.

So GREAT depends on the Point of View. It was shure a lot of work to do in this Release with a lot of bugfixing.  But , if you don't use CEC and you have a Multiroom System other then Sonos, the only viewable thing you can benefit from is the new Handling for stupid Devices which changed from a stupid Implementation to a expected implementation.

It's cool to see that it's going forward, even in small steps. But i really hope that the Software Quality will come closer to the Hardware Quality in not to far future.

When do you think we will be able to properly customise the remote screens, custom icons (or library of options), arrange and resize buttons, rename them etc. ? This is really important for me to catch up with my old and ugly but superbly customisable Nevo Q50. I had really hoped this would be a priority.

    Thanks again :)

Adam Parrish Based on the feedback here on Planet NEEO we decided that the handling of the not-so-smart-devices needs a rework urgently.

The next release will not bring all the customization wishes you just described, but the first ones will be included. From then on you will have more options with every release. This has already been realized and will go to beta in a few days, it is not just a priority.

Stay tuned, if you have "idiot devices" you will surely appreciate the changes we published right now.

    • Patrick Thanks, I am not as impatient as some others I think because 90% of what I want works really well with Neeo and the responsiveness is so much better than any other remote I have tried, even on some of the original product remotes.

I won't lie, I came very close to returning the Neeo and bought the top end Harmony to compare. It is junk in comparison so I'm sticking with you guys and hoping the things I want will appear sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the hard work, it must be a bit disheartening when you put in a lot of effort and the majority of responses moan about what you didn't do ;)

can i use the keys now like i want? im missing a hardware- 'pause' button, usable without looking on my neeo...so why not letting me do a long click on for example the mute-button to pause the movie...i am missing sooo much features, and instead of giving power to the users to do what they like, you still try to push through your own way of handling everything...

i like my neeo for physical appearance, i sell it now for the usability...

vistalba With what devices were you having problems with the responsiveness on the hard buttons? That does not soubd like a common issue.

For Kodi there already is a community written driver. We'll be adding more features to the SDK soon so that the functionality of that can be greatly improved.

Patrick I've a recipe and execute this. At the end of the recipe is "Use TV" as remote defined.

After some time (e.g. after watching a tv show) all physical buttons become unresponsive until re-execute the recipe or reboot the remote. (Tried reset of all stuff, reboot brain.. etc. did not help).

But anyway... I updated yesterday to 0.48. Since the update this behavior is not happen again.

Don't check if I can use a SDK driver ... I thunk I cloud use https://hub.docker.com/r/alxbauer/neeo-driver-kodi/ but don't know how to configure Neeo to work with this docker.

    • Patrick I’ve had issues with the volume hard buttons not working for Sonos Playbar. My solution, maybe not the only one, was to edit recipe(s) to have sound set to “TV” and then immediately set it back to “Sonos”. Hard buttons worked again straight afterwards but hopefully this can be fixed properly.

Simon Morton Hello! Can you please try the recovery mode on the NEEO Remote and reboot the NEEO Brain? Leave the brain unplugged for a minute or two then plug back in. When the NEEO Brains LED is solid white, perform the recovery mode on the remote.

      1. Hold the power button on the NEEO Remote for 15 seconds

      2. Wait a few seconds

      3. Press the power & mute button simultaneously for a few seconds

      4. You should see the option for recovery, follow the on-screen steps

      Thanks!

    • Jeff Thanks Jeff, I did that and the remote SEEMED to be working okay but then I followed the advice to reset the brain via the app and since then, the brain can’t be found on my WiFi network. I followed the app guidance and connected via Ethernet, was told by the app everything is good, I can now disconnect Ethernet and put the brain wherever I want. BUT, now after several attempts to connect, it just cannot be found via wireless.

I will try tonight but I can confirm that after the NEEO app told me that I could disconnect the ethernet cable and install the brain wherever I wanted (i.e. connected via WiFi), indeed, the app was not able to find the brain on the network, although it was visible as a device when looking at the connected devices via Google WiFi app.

    • Jeff Hi Jeff, sorry for the very delayed reply. So after trying setup again, most functionality seems to be working well. No more issues with the app "flashing" and in general, everything is working as well as before the firmware update (there was another firmware update in the meantime, so perhaps that fixed some issues).

What I do experience quite frequently are the following:

      • Some steps within recipes sometimes do not work, e.g. TV doesn't start
      • Remote hard buttons fail to operate volume up/down
      • Sometimes when switching from one recipe to another, NEEO does not turn off devices which are unused in the new recipe, e.g.
        • Xbox One recipe is running, so the TV is on and Xbox One is on
        • If I then run Sky TV recipe, the TV switches to the correct input and my Sky+HD box powers on, but the Xbox does not power off (this seems to be inconsistent behaviour, which works sometimes and not others...of course, I checked for any obstructions)

One final question which probably doesn't belong here, sorry. Is it possible to control Squeezebox devices (specifically, Squeezebox Boom) over IP yet?

Many thanks for your help and patience

      Simon

      Simon Morton Hello Simon!

No worries on the delayed response and thank you for the update. When you switch from one recipe to another NEEO will not automatically power off any unused devices. I suggest adding the power off commands to different recipes from different devices to do so when you switch from one recipe to another.

When you power on a recipe and a step is executed, but does not trigger the command; this could more than likely be due to the IR signal not reaching the device, in your case the Tv. Can you confirm that the NEEO Brain is in line of sight of the Tv?

When the volume buttons do not work, does this happen now that your unit is on 0.48.35?

At the moment we do not support the Squeezebox via IP. We do, however support a few Squeezebox devices via IR :).

      Thanks!

    • Jeff Hi Jeff

Thanks for the reply. Then I must have imagined that unused devices were powered off when switching recipes...

Anyway, I agree your suggestion is at least a partial solution, but it's not ideal. For example, for devices with a power toggle command, such as an Xbox One X, if I add a step to toggle the Xbox power "off" when starting the TV recipe, this would only be an appropriate step under the circumstances I described, i.e. when switching from Xbox to TV.

If I simply use the TV recipe from scratch, that is all devices being "off", it would actually power on the Xbox.

I assume if a device has discrete power on/off commands, your solution would work as an "off" command to an already off device would simply do nothing.

      Did I understand correctly?

      Simon

Simon Morton Do not add them as steps in a recipe. Add the power off or power toggle commands as shortcuts in different recipes. This works perfectly :).

  • The new release seems to be a set of bug fixes and minor tweaks (which will be significant to people who experience the specific problems it addresses), but I have to agree with some of the others here who have expressed disappointment. What Neeo desperately needs is a revamp of the user interface.

I was hoping for some new features, i use neither Sonos or HDMI-CEC modes, so the majority of the update was useless. I was much more interested in the customisation features and sleep/awake features of the remote and the fixes for these plus implementations for apple home kit, google home and alexa etc...
