Apple TV 4.0 Power Off Issue

Anyone having any luck powering off the 4th gen Apple TV?  I have the “POWER OFF” command being sent to it properly but it does something else, almost like it’s just sending Menu twice.  All firmware and devices are up-to-date.

  • Travis Long The sending of the Menu twice in a short time, sends the AppleTV 4th Gen to the Sleep mode (normally, when in home screen). The AppleTV itself doesn't provide a Power Off State, unless you remove the Power Cord!

    • Markus Mahr Not true. Holding Menu will take you to the top of the home screen from anywhere, then clicking Menu will take you to the first icon, and clicking Menu again will start the screensaver.  That’s much different than putting it into Sleep mode by holding the Home/TV button on the Siri remote for 5 seconds and then choosing Sleep from the menu, or by going to "Settings"->"Sleep Now".  That’s more what I would expect from a “POWER OFF” command. • Just a follow up to this.  If Sleep isn't currently supported in any way by IR commands, then maybe it's better for it to just not be an option to select until proper support comes down the line via HDMI-CEC control.

  • I am sure  Andy can check that again. We do have an Apple TV in the office, I will check how the current command behaves again.

Are others having issues that device too? I am just wondering if that may be related to some settings.

Patrick Yes I have the same issue. I think that the power off command needs to be a "macro" that press "menu + long press menu (2-3 seconds) + ok button".

Hugo Martínez It seems like it is possible with the original remote to bring the Apple TV into sleep mode. However, this does not seem to be working with a general IR code that we can simply send out, that somehow is related to the original remote being paired and sending out different commands. So we need to dig a little further.

  • OK, I had a chance to check: We are currently sending "menu" twice. This does not actually power off the Apple TV, but it makes sure playback is stopped. Once Andy is back in Switzerland we will check again if you could get the macro described by you running.

    • Patrick Thanks for the update. Unfortunately it seems that there’s no clear way to accomplish this via IR besides going into the menus of the Settings app. From what I can tell HDMI-CEC will be the answer though, so I will patiently wait for it. :)

    • Patrick Is it safe to assume Apple TV 5 will work with NEEO?  I'd assume the controls would be the same as #4.

Dave Overbaugh I have to check that with the device driver team. It is not always easy to get information from Apple in advance 😉
