Apple TV 4K (Apple TV 5.0) Support

I will be an early adopter of the Apple TV 4K. Is it safe to assume the IR codes will be the same as Apple TV 4.0 or will we have to wait for Neeo to update the firmware and incorporate the new device?

  • Our device driver team will do everything possible to have these ready before you get these, but I can't promise. We will not need to update the firmware since we can add new devices without having to do that, so it should not take any longer than a few days.

    • Patrick Yes I second this update request. I attempted to reestsblish the Apple TV 5.0 as a 4.0 with no luck.

Zammel Fernandez I just changed the ATV 4 for the 4K, and it worked fine. Not sure what problem you have run into. It may help deleting the ATV 4 driver and reinstalling it.

    • Anders ok thanks for the update. I have my plugged into into a av receiver. Is yours directly plugged into the TV? Do you have CEC enabled? Maybe my issues is due to not being plugged in directly.

Zammel Fernandez My Apple TV has CEC enabled and is attached directly to the TV.

    • Anders ok thanks! I have CEC turned off and plugged into an AV receiver other wise it sends and IR signal and attempts to turn off through the humo signal, this leads to inconsistent turn offs and turn ons.

  • Anders Thanks a lot for that information. I think based on that we should be able to add the command set 👍

Zammel Fernandez Could you try unpairing your Apple Remote (it will still worked) by going through the procedure described over here ?

    • Patrick I can confirm that I have followed the instructions provided and it still does not work. I have unpaired the Apple TV 4K remote and removed the device, no luck.

Zammel Fernandez So no commands are working at all? That seems strange since many others are reporting it is working.

Anders Could you maybe give it a quick test without CEC just to make sure it is not being controlled over CEC?

Ours is scheduled to arrive in a few days, then we can test this right here in the office.

      Patrick

Good morning, It is already shipping. I picked mine up from Best Buy last Sunday. I have run into an issue. I have an older apple TV in my bedroom. I am actually using 1 brain to control both my bedroom devices and my living room home theater through use of the IR extender. The problem is now when i turn on my apple TV in the bedroom, the Apple TV in the living room also turns on, powering up my entire home theater! Any ideas on how this can be fixed?

    • Malcolm Cox I thought there was an optiopn to use alternative codes on appleTV but can't find an article on that. i did found this however: http://www.idownloadblog.com/2015/11/04/how-to-universal-remote-apple-tv/

Thanks for the response. I've actually read this one a while back to program my TV remote to control the Apple TV. However, there is no fix to my issue unless i have missed something? Neeo remote is controlling both my Apple TVs at the same time.

Malcolm Cox Thanks for the feedback. We will go ahead and add the Apple TV 4K IR code set based on the previous versions since that seems to work.

When we find the time we can do some research for alternative code sets. Based on the link Niels de Klerk posted, wouldn't it be an idea that you add any media player which you don't actually own, and then learn these commands to one of your Apple TVs? You can then still call it "Apple TV" and assign into the correct room. A player that comes to my mind is the "Zotac AD04", or maybe any other MCE remote.

I will have Andy check which other devices have the exact same commands, I am sure he can help with that.

Niels de Klerk We have found them. But we need to do some serious testing for these cause apparently switching to these and then not having the right commands ready can leave your Apple device in a state in which it will no longer accept any other commands. If you don't have the right ones ready then, that is a pretty unlucky situation. Therefore this will take a while.

Patrick That worked! I ended up using a Roku profile because the Zotac AD04 as you suggested did not work. None of the buttons were able to make the IR extender send any IR signals.  Just an FYI . Thanks for the work-around.

    • Patrick if you want to have them tested then I can do so. I have the right tools to do so. And I can control my Apple TV with my phone and BTremote if it fails.

  • I posted this on a different thread, but this one is more appropriate.  My Apple TV 4K was working perfectly with existing recipes until today.  I actually had not changed the device and was still using it as an Apple TV 4 with no problems.  The issue is that the navigation arrows stopped working on the NEEO remote (and the app).  Everything else (e.g. Menu, Home, etc)  still works.  I have gone through the Un Pair process and also changed the device to the new one you just released (4K), but still no navigation.  This just happened 1 hour ago in the middle of normal usage.

  • I have just checked with the device driver team, there were no changes done to the command set for the apple tv 4. Even if there are changes, the device has to be updated manually, so that should no influence your setup.

Is it possible that the position of the NEEO Brain has been changed? Do you see the same behavior when using the NEEO App and the NEEO Remote?

Just to make sure, there was no update on the Apple TV?

    • Patrick After eliminating all other causes, I am now quite certain this was due to IR interference.  The room has large windows that are normally covered with shades.  In this case, the shades were not in place and there was a higher than usual ambient sun light coming in that appears to have caused the interference.  It is still a little odd that it only affected the navigation commands, but the problem went away as the sunlight diminished.  Sunlight interference is a known issue with IR controls, but I had never experienced it first hand.  Perhaps it can be improved by bringing the Brain closer, but my room geometry doesn't allow that at the moment.

Chris Kyriakakis Thanks a lot for the feedback, you are totally correct bright light may have an issue on certain IR commands.

If you want you can go ahead and post some images of your room setup, we may then be able to come up with further ideas for the placement of your NEEO Brain.

  • FWIW, I just swapped out two Apple TV units for the new Apple TV 4k. They were both controlled by an IR RTI headend with an emitter on the front of the AppleTV. Despite multiple swaps back and forth, the AppleTV 4K won't respond to any of the same IR commands (arrows, menu, etc) as the former Apple TV. I have tried this in my living room and theater - so two remotes, two apple tv (old), two apple tv (4k), so there is really no chance of something being broken - the codes are just not working.  I've swapped back to the previous boxes.  Is there something I need to enable on the 4K ATVs in order to make them work? Or learn/download a new IR command set to the RTI system? (i.e. have my installer do this).  I can't fathom why Apple would change working IR codes, so I suspect a setup issue, but can't find anything.

Mark Porter Just a thought: do you think your installer programmed the prior Apple TVs to accept different IR codes? You can check that out by reinstalling one of the Apple TV boxes and go to the remote menu to see, if a new remote has been learned. If that is the case, you can relearn your existing IR setup on the new Apple TV. You would then use your Apple Remote to select the appropriate menu under remotes and then use your existing IR setup to relearn the codes on the Apple TV.

Mark Porter The best would be to get a NEEO 😉

I assume  Anders is on the right track. Have a look at this link , and make sure to unpair your Apple remote as described here .

Has there been any update on how to put the AppleTV (4K) in sleep mode from the Neeo remote? Currently when I press the power (off) button on the Neeo remote only the TV powers off and I know this because the solid light on the AppleTV remains lit.  However, with the AppleTV remote I am able to put it in sleep mode by pressing the TV icon for a few seconds, which then gives me a pop up message on whether I want to put it to sleep or not.  The only downside is that all devices are powered off.  This is fine if I was completely done using my devices but that is not always the case.

It would be fantastic if the Neeo remote had a sleep mode option that would only power off the AppleTV in addition to having a properly functioning power (on/off) button on the Neeo remote that will actually shut off all devices in said recipe which in my case would be the AppleTV 4K.

Please let me know if any of these features are being added.  I think I read in another post regarding the AppleTV that the Neeo team was working on adding a sleep mode function.

    Thanks,

    -Gio

Gio Thanks for the feedback. We have not added this yet since it seems like this is not reliably possible over IR. We are still exploring this.
