NEEO joins the Control4 Family

Friends,

I have the biggest news to share since inception. I wanted you to be among the very first to hear that NEEO just joined the Control4 family, the NASDAQ listed market leader in professionally installed smart home experiences.

My goal with this post is to generally inform you what that means for all of us and for the current product.

Let me share some insights with you

With the announcement of NEEO PRO we intended to enter the market of professionally installed systems and we got amazing responses to our product like never before.

We knew success in the professionally installed field would be crucial for us. What began as NEEO working intensely with the teams at Control4 in order to make the experience with the Control4 platform an exceptional one soon became more. The deeper we dug in together the clearer it became that we should be a unified team to achieve the awesome level of integration we feel is right for the dealers and end-customers.

That’s basically how it all began. When the acquisition talks started, we felt it would be a perfect match. We have received many other acquisition offers before but those ones were always money-focused so we were not interested. This time it was different. We were two companies that both have a deep passion to create the best smart home experiences for the customers - and ultimately we fell in love.

Preparing for this deal and today’s announcement required a quiet-period. You may have realized we were a bit more quiet than usual - that’s why. I’m so happy I can finally share this news with you. It’s such a huge chance for a startup like NEEO!

Is this the end?

Being a very active supporter of many startups, and dozens of Kickstarter campaigns myself, I’m always afraid of receiving a goodbye email from companies. Many ran out of funding and I have a pile of products at home that I cannot use anymore. This sucks but it reflects the general success/failure rate of startups and the risk-taking involved. We want this to be different for you

Things will change, even though NEEO and Control4 both want to make sure your NEEO stays active and usable for a period of at least 24 months from this announcement. That being said, I also want to make sure we communicate transparently so the expectations are set right. As of today, no more NEEO products will be shipped. All existing NEEO customers will continue to receive support though and all services will be up for another 24 months. We understand the importance of the IR database continuing to evolve, we have short term solutions in place and we are looking into options to make this possible in the future as well.

How about new firmware versions?

To celebrate today's announcement, we have just made release 0.53.8 available to everyone. This release brings a load of new features to your NEEO, including a new dark UI, unlimited Multi-Brain support, more customization, and some awesome Easter-eggs. Check out the detailed release notes here.

We are planning to maintain the infrastructure required to deploy critical updates for the next 24 months and you may continue to use the SDK so that everyone can continue to build great applications for the platform.  That said, other than any critical updates this firmware is the last one that comes from the NEEO team. Control4 sells its products exclusively to certified dealers and not to end-customers, so it’s 100% clear there won’t be any direct-to-consumer products.

Why did we not stay independent?

We started NEEO with the idea of creating an amazing and easy to use universal interface for the smart home. Many large companies had tried this before and ultimately failed in one way or the other, but we had the drive and flexibility to make it happen. Overall the challenge of getting all protocols and devices supported is the biggest trick. We may have pushed the boundaries further than any other product out there but ultimately realized that the best smart home experience needs to be a curated one.

In my mind, Control4 is the clear winner in this category and by combining the great Control4 product line-up and the amazing dealer network with NEEO’s experience in the interaction devices category we feel will lead to the best experience possible. We will have the honor to continue the journey as part of this public company and work with awesome smart home gurus such as Charlie Kindel (Image) who joined Control4 from Amazon, where he previously led the Alexa efforts for the smart home.

Planet NEEO

As I anticipate my new role in the Control4 family, it is with a big smile but also a heavy heart I’m writing my last blog post here. I want to thank everyone who was part of the NEEO journey, especially all of you who were our biggest supporters and so crazy active here on the planet. Speaking about that - Planet NEEO will stay. You made it such a powerful knowledge base and fun place to hang out. You will notice that we change it a little bit to boost the features that matter and sunset those which are no longer needed. The team will remain available for you here.

I believe many of you understand this change, but I’m also convinced there is a bit of sadness involved for many of us. We totally understand that you don’t want your NEEO to stop working. Some of you may be interested in doing more – providing support or development work for current NEEO customers. We are open to discussions if you have an interest. We can’t promise anything, yet we are open for all discussions. You have ideas in that regard? You want to be part of that future? Let us know your thoughts over here!

The (last) One

I mentioned above that there won’t be any more NEEO’s available from today on. There is one small exception. One lucky winner will get the very last unit, signed by the team and with a certificate of authenticity. All you need to do in order to win is posting a comment anywhere on Planet NEEO during the next 48h.

You beautiful people and inhabitants of Planet NEEO are simply the best. I’m thankful and honored having been part of this journey with you.

THANK YOU!

Raphael

Daniel Jordi What device are you using to access Netflix? Is this a Tv, BluRay player etc? Can you provide me with the exact make and model? Can you confirm you removed the plastic film from the top of the NEEO Brain? Have you tested having the NEEO Brain directly in front of this device to see if that helps?

Jon Iverson So this is happening with the new firmware update and also happened with the previous? When this happens to your remote, are you able to access the NEEO app with no issues?

      Reply Like
    • Jeff It's early here in California so haven't tried the new update yet. It currently happens with the previous version though - while navigating around AppleTV or using the remote during a program, NEEO stops working and the "Please Wait" screen pops up and then reconnects a few seconds later. I'll update and see what happens. Haven't tried the NEEO app when this happens since the remote comes back to life a few seconds later.

i think the problem is, that when i want to scroll i have to press each time i want to go to the next movie.

when i press to much, the stop happens...

i think its the brain making a pause to check if the input is korrekt?

Jon Iverson Do keep me posted. If the app has no issues than the remote is losing connection with your router and therefore losing connection to the NEEO Brain. Let me know if the update helps, if not I will recommend some steps to take :).

  • Having dealt with Control4 dealers and salesmen, I can say they are as arrogant and demanding as they are expensive. Control4 just removed another competitor form the market. If you look at Control4 current remotes you will realise the Neeo remote will be priced alot higher than it currently is, if they continue to promote it that is.

Not about money? You could have gone to a great driver programmer, and had drivers made for your remote for ALL major automation systems, RTI, URC, Control4, Elan and more. But instead you sold out and gave all your developers and customers you have worked hard to promote and expand your remotes capabilities.

And you expect them to continue to develop for a product that will no longer be supported, I mean 24months continued support, that means no more software upgrades, and Control4 dealers will only offer support if you are using with a Control4 system and a registered installer.

Neeo was the one remote in the world that offered other developers a great universal remote that could support other brand controllers, if you worked with them. But it's far easier to sell out to Control4.

You steered the company in the wrong direction, Neeo could have been the remote to offer all these new Smart Homes a solid hand held remote to complete their app based Hub, such as smarthings, Fibaro, vera, homey, Zipato, etc, many more sales here, but that's not the easy path is it, or the fast cash.

My remote is now worthless, can I get a refund, as I can't afford the upgrade to a control4 system in the future.

  • I think the proper arrangement would be for Control 4 to adopt the NEEO family of customers into their ecosystem. Hopefully we NEEO consumers do not get shut off in 24 months but rather have our hardware updated to become new Control 4 users.

I was excited for an alternative to the Logitech products and am really hoping my move to NEEO was all for nothing. I was reluctant to go with NEEO as I did not see a lot of activity from the company in the recent months but I pulled the trigger and now am second guessing that move.

Any thoughts on what this means if we have issues with our remotes and the devices they control? I loved having great customer support to resolve issues that I had, it is something that a lot of companies lack.

Congratulations on the big acquisition, from a business perspective it is great, just keep in mind that there is a fine line where consumers are promoters and detractors. How acquisitions are handled is how many companies build these detractors.

That is what a serious company would negotiate when selling out. At this point I highly doubt that was even a consideration in their negotiation as clearly they don't give a damn about their customers. We were only needed for the kickstarter money to finance this project.

I do not understand what kind of mental illness @Raphael has. The greatest news ever??? Really??

I have always tried to be positive about NEEO, I thought it was a small company trying to grow and do their best.... What a scam!

  • Sorry to see that Neeo has gone down the route of no longer offering a fully customizable remote direct to consumers. Same issue is what eventually caused me to abandon using Universal Remote Control's "Complete Control" models. And since Philips pulled the plug on Pronto years ago, there's apparently nowhere to go for advanced DIYers who want a fully customizable remote but don't want to be on the hook for professional custom programming services every time they make some change to their equipment or want it to behave differently.

A small minority will benefit from this acquisition, while the vast majority will be left with an expensive paperweight. Sad, but entirely predictable. Still, at least we can all sleep again at night now that we know Patrick is alive and well after several months of silence!

A piece of good news for the company NEEO itself, a piece of bad news for all users who do not use Control4. Without the possibility to learn IR codes, the current NEEO is completely worthless without IR database support and it will not be possible to use future devices via IR. Unfortunately, a lot of people have burned money for a device that only does basic functions and the device is garbage after 24 months. This is a great pity for the current customer.

    Reply Like 2
  • I like my NEEO and it does what I wanted but I wish they would have included the learning tool so we can add unsupported devices ourselves. I do think that the writing is on the wall for these types of consumer devices. Homekit TV integration built in alone pretty much does that and it's right around the corner now. All in all it's disappointing news but not really surprising.

I Could probably write endless amounts of words about my feelings but the above will have to explain all.

The only thing I will ask for is that our NEEOs are made independent and possible for us all to update. I gave up on home automation with NEEO but PLEASE just make sure that IR-codes can be added and maintained so we can at least use it as a very nice and expensive normal remote.

Pontus Lernhag With so much bad wishes and curses, you think Neeo as a product will survive, its doomed with all the negative comments. No company has survived the wrath of sad customers

Alex I am sure the community could maintain the remote to keep it usable for a longer time. But it all depends on how willing Control4 are to modify the software to be self-maintained. From what I have read so far it does not look positive at all. But lets see.
