NEEO joins the Control4 Family

Friends,

I have the biggest news to share since inception. I wanted you to be among the very first to hear that NEEO just joined the Control4 family, the NASDAQ listed market leader in professionally installed smart home experiences.

My goal with this post is to generally inform you what that means for all of us and for the current product.

Let me share some insights with you

With the announcement of NEEO PRO we intended to enter the market of professionally installed systems and we got amazing responses to our product like never before.

We knew success in the professionally installed field would be crucial for us. What began as NEEO working intensely with the teams at Control4 in order to make the experience with the Control4 platform an exceptional one soon became more. The deeper we dug in together the clearer it became that we should be a unified team to achieve the awesome level of integration we feel is right for the dealers and end-customers.

That’s basically how it all began. When the acquisition talks started, we felt it would be a perfect match. We have received many other acquisition offers before but those ones were always money-focused so we were not interested. This time it was different. We were two companies that both have a deep passion to create the best smart home experiences for the customers - and ultimately we fell in love.

Preparing for this deal and today’s announcement required a quiet-period. You may have realized we were a bit more quiet than usual - that’s why. I’m so happy I can finally share this news with you. It’s such a huge chance for a startup like NEEO!

Is this the end?

Being a very active supporter of many startups, and dozens of Kickstarter campaigns myself, I’m always afraid of receiving a goodbye email from companies. Many ran out of funding and I have a pile of products at home that I cannot use anymore. This sucks but it reflects the general success/failure rate of startups and the risk-taking involved. We want this to be different for you

Things will change, even though NEEO and Control4 both want to make sure your NEEO stays active and usable for a period of at least 24 months from this announcement. That being said, I also want to make sure we communicate transparently so the expectations are set right. As of today, no more NEEO products will be shipped. All existing NEEO customers will continue to receive support though and all services will be up for another 24 months. We understand the importance of the IR database continuing to evolve, we have short term solutions in place and we are looking into options to make this possible in the future as well.

How about new firmware versions?

To celebrate today's announcement, we have just made release 0.53.8 available to everyone. This release brings a load of new features to your NEEO, including a new dark UI, unlimited Multi-Brain support, more customization, and some awesome Easter-eggs. Check out the detailed release notes here.

We are planning to maintain the infrastructure required to deploy critical updates for the next 24 months and you may continue to use the SDK so that everyone can continue to build great applications for the platform.  That said, other than any critical updates this firmware is the last one that comes from the NEEO team. Control4 sells its products exclusively to certified dealers and not to end-customers, so it’s 100% clear there won’t be any direct-to-consumer products.

Why did we not stay independent?

We started NEEO with the idea of creating an amazing and easy to use universal interface for the smart home. Many large companies had tried this before and ultimately failed in one way or the other, but we had the drive and flexibility to make it happen. Overall the challenge of getting all protocols and devices supported is the biggest trick. We may have pushed the boundaries further than any other product out there but ultimately realized that the best smart home experience needs to be a curated one.

In my mind, Control4 is the clear winner in this category and by combining the great Control4 product line-up and the amazing dealer network with NEEO’s experience in the interaction devices category we feel will lead to the best experience possible. We will have the honor to continue the journey as part of this public company and work with awesome smart home gurus such as Charlie Kindel (Image) who joined Control4 from Amazon, where he previously led the Alexa efforts for the smart home.

Planet NEEO

As I anticipate my new role in the Control4 family, it is with a big smile but also a heavy heart I’m writing my last blog post here. I want to thank everyone who was part of the NEEO journey, especially all of you who were our biggest supporters and so crazy active here on the planet. Speaking about that - Planet NEEO will stay. You made it such a powerful knowledge base and fun place to hang out. You will notice that we change it a little bit to boost the features that matter and sunset those which are no longer needed. The team will remain available for you here.

I believe many of you understand this change, but I’m also convinced there is a bit of sadness involved for many of us. We totally understand that you don’t want your NEEO to stop working. Some of you may be interested in doing more – providing support or development work for current NEEO customers. We are open to discussions if you have an interest. We can’t promise anything, yet we are open for all discussions. You have ideas in that regard? You want to be part of that future? Let us know your thoughts over here!

The (last) One

I mentioned above that there won’t be any more NEEO’s available from today on. There is one small exception. One lucky winner will get the very last unit, signed by the team and with a certificate of authenticity. All you need to do in order to win is posting a comment anywhere on Planet NEEO during the next 48h.

You beautiful people and inhabitants of Planet NEEO are simply the best. I’m thankful and honored having been part of this journey with you.

THANK YOU!

Raphael

  • 1. Can you specify what ”Support for 24 months” includes. You must have ready plan for this.

    2. What happened to my white rabbit which was promised but never delivered? (Thank you very much for your early support on Kickstarter … shipping of Black Cats and Pure Aluminum starts today … we had to decide against the White Rabbit … If you were an original supporter of it you will get a beautiful White Rabbit piece of art, together with whatever new NEEO combo you decide on. That way we remember this special version who never made it to planet Earth.)

I earlier though that you better channel your resources to development but now that you have some zeros added to you bank balance, you can deliver promised White Rabbit. I’ll put it next to my soon to be Black Brick. That way we remember these special versions. I can even tell a story about to them to my children, who with round eyes will ask – how much? Not joking, wrap it up. You have my address.

    3. What exactly in this announcement was good for us (end users)?

  • This is not the first or the last piece of tech you will buy that will have and end life. While it is unfortunate for all us users, it will make way for bigger and better things, am i disappointed, of course. Do i feel i have been used, not really. We all bought tech that that has dissapeared and much of it. By this i mean the likes of eight track tapes, cassette tapes, DVR players, i remember my first reel to reel player all gone, spent plenty of money on all of them., But better and more advanced tech took there place. Personally my experience with Neo has been great and well worth the money i spent, hate to see it end. Jeff i wish you and the Neeo team the best. I am truly disappointed, but I also understand how these things happen. Continued success to all the folks at Neeo.

    • Stephen Karp Yeah, most tech will be replace by newer and most often better tech. 8-track tapes -> cassette tapes -> CD -> mp3 -> streaming. But that is over 40-50 years. Each change for the most part improving on what came before.

But I think most of the anger is because it we got something that was promised i first half of 2015 and got it late in 2017, with functionality promised but not delivered. Neither at shipping nor with later firmware updates.

I rewatched some of the kickstarter videos. I had forgot they promised palm recognition with individual user profiles.

Jeff Wait, my VCR still works, even though it's not supported. I understand that companies come and go. But the product we paid (and waited for) should not be bricked. Is there really a reason it should stop working after two years? Why don't you answer straight? Will it continue to work even after support ends? It's a clear question I am sure you know the answer to.

Jan Strojil i and a lot of other people think so. because they announced to let the server online for the next 2 years. and you need the server for new devices on your side. only there are the codes stored that your neeo receive during the configuration. but after 2 years the server are not reachable anymore and you can't configure new devices on your neeo

This is not entirely correct - you won't be able to add NEEO native devices anymore (if another solution doesn't become available - which I'm guessing will happen).  However, you can still add devices via the SDK.  In fact, all my devices are IP/bluetooth devices that I've added through my openHAB integration...

I've posted a few videos on https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRFQUtdjNM2j0fpyD029rTw that show it (these are fairly old now and things have changed a bit - but should give you a good start). Basically - in a nutshell:

      1. You'll need to install openHAB first (see https://www.openhab.org/docs/installation/). If you are a windows guy - I just put together a openHAB windows installer that you can try (https://github.com/tmrobert8/openhab-windows-utils - click the releases link) - it's being tested right now so there may be bugs.

      2. Open the paperui (use a browser and goto http://localhost:8080 if on the same machine you install on).  Note: you may need to wait 5-10 minutes for everything to install before paperui is really active.

      3. Install the binding for your devices (in paperui->addons->bindings then press install for each you have). The list of binding are only those that are stable and have gone through a testing process. There are alot of 'in progress' bindings (such as my sony one) that you'd have to manually install - a more advanced concept that I won't explain here but feel free to ask me on openHABs forum (https://community.openhab.org/)

      4. Configure your devices (in paperui->inbox).  This depends on the binding - some have auto detection and they will start appearing in your inbox as they are discovered.  Others need to be configured manually (hit the 'plus' button and follow the screens).  You may need to pull up the binding documentation for this (google 'openhab <binding>' and you should find it).  The older binding may require file editing (yuck).

      5. Once your devices are online (paperui->configuration->things) - you need to install the openHAB NEEO stuff.  There are two parts - NEEO binding (which will allow openHAB to control NEEO) and the NEEO integration (allows NEEO to discovery openHAB and control it).  You definitely want the NEEO integration (install from paperui->addons->misc) since that allows NEEO to discovery and control your openHAB devices.  The NEEO binding (paperui->addons->bindings) is really optional - install it if you want to make openHAB rules that control NEEO or if you want to modify the hard key bindings of a NEEO device.

      6. Once you have NEEO integration installed - go back to https://localhost:8080 and you should see a big "NEEO INTEGRATION" icon.  Clicking that brings you to where the videos above start and where you configure/expose openHAB devices to NEEO

Actually disagree - homey in particular is very user friendly (openHAB is less so but getting there).  All you need is something running all the time (to install homey or openHAB on - could be a PC [intel nuc in my instance] or a Rasp PI or NAS, etc) and it's all pretty graphical at that point.

Just to add - the big issue really isn't the 24 months everyone keeps talking about because there are alternatives (and could be more alternatives soon).  The biggest issue is hardware failure and the lack of being able to replace it

Jeff There is not much left to the point. The support was always endeavored and friendly, but ultimately you could not find the errors and certainly not fix the errors. Now the community should solve the problems somehow. NEEO is a black box for me, it makes mistakes and switches devices which is in no way comprehensible to me. To understand the mistakes on the side of the support does not seem to be possible. On the other hand, it is impossible for the user to do his own error analysis at all. The only one who can do a bug analysis was NEEO himself on the basis of the log files. So if there should be any progress that people can help each other then that would be the least that you as a user can have access to your own log files. That's the only way you can possibly find some mistakes and fix them.

For a Control4 customer, the product must function reliably in the future, otherwise he sues the dealer or manufacturer.
We as users also have a right that the product finally works and the product is usable at least without errors for the remaining years. In this regard, it is in the interest of Control4 to find and fix the existing bugs with existing users so that their own product meets the quality requirements you place on such a high priced product.

Congrats on the exit. Just a couple of notes:

    • It's unfortunate that having had 'many acquisition offers' you chose a company with the exact opposite business model; that is 'not to serve' the DIY community.
    • Also, asking people for 'thoughts' in the same post that you acknowledge this is the last software update seems a bit backwards.

But as I know you this will never happen.

Frederik Vancoillie I have to say, for me and with my devices, Neeo worked quite well. And with the last SDK update, I can even add the devices which were not possible in the past.

I'd like to have more customization options (maybe with this update?, I haven't tried it yet) and a more reliable connection from the remote to the brain (the no connection issue, but it is now better than it was before), but beside that I'm more or less happy.

Of course the battery runtime could be better, the hand recognition would be nice and all the other promised features, but for me, the actual functionset is not too bad.

  • I bought a 250 bucks piece of crap that wont get the features we were told about years ago and you guys are selling it like it would be a great thing? After a wait of 23 months i recieved the remote. After 9 months the software was stable enough to use. To use iT as a simple remote! And now its dead!
