NEEO joins the Control4 Family

Friends,

I have the biggest news to share since inception. I wanted you to be among the very first to hear that NEEO just joined the Control4 family, the NASDAQ listed market leader in professionally installed smart home experiences.

My goal with this post is to generally inform you what that means for all of us and for the current product.

Let me share some insights with you

With the announcement of NEEO PRO we intended to enter the market of professionally installed systems and we got amazing responses to our product like never before.

We knew success in the professionally installed field would be crucial for us. What began as NEEO working intensely with the teams at Control4 in order to make the experience with the Control4 platform an exceptional one soon became more. The deeper we dug in together the clearer it became that we should be a unified team to achieve the awesome level of integration we feel is right for the dealers and end-customers.

That’s basically how it all began. When the acquisition talks started, we felt it would be a perfect match. We have received many other acquisition offers before but those ones were always money-focused so we were not interested. This time it was different. We were two companies that both have a deep passion to create the best smart home experiences for the customers - and ultimately we fell in love.

Preparing for this deal and today’s announcement required a quiet-period. You may have realized we were a bit more quiet than usual - that’s why. I’m so happy I can finally share this news with you. It’s such a huge chance for a startup like NEEO!

Is this the end?

Being a very active supporter of many startups, and dozens of Kickstarter campaigns myself, I’m always afraid of receiving a goodbye email from companies. Many ran out of funding and I have a pile of products at home that I cannot use anymore. This sucks but it reflects the general success/failure rate of startups and the risk-taking involved. We want this to be different for you

Things will change, even though NEEO and Control4 both want to make sure your NEEO stays active and usable for a period of at least 24 months from this announcement. That being said, I also want to make sure we communicate transparently so the expectations are set right. As of today, no more NEEO products will be shipped. All existing NEEO customers will continue to receive support though and all services will be up for another 24 months. We understand the importance of the IR database continuing to evolve, we have short term solutions in place and we are looking into options to make this possible in the future as well.

How about new firmware versions?

To celebrate today's announcement, we have just made release 0.53.8 available to everyone. This release brings a load of new features to your NEEO, including a new dark UI, unlimited Multi-Brain support, more customization, and some awesome Easter-eggs. Check out the detailed release notes here.

We are planning to maintain the infrastructure required to deploy critical updates for the next 24 months and you may continue to use the SDK so that everyone can continue to build great applications for the platform.  That said, other than any critical updates this firmware is the last one that comes from the NEEO team. Control4 sells its products exclusively to certified dealers and not to end-customers, so it’s 100% clear there won’t be any direct-to-consumer products.

Why did we not stay independent?

We started NEEO with the idea of creating an amazing and easy to use universal interface for the smart home. Many large companies had tried this before and ultimately failed in one way or the other, but we had the drive and flexibility to make it happen. Overall the challenge of getting all protocols and devices supported is the biggest trick. We may have pushed the boundaries further than any other product out there but ultimately realized that the best smart home experience needs to be a curated one.

In my mind, Control4 is the clear winner in this category and by combining the great Control4 product line-up and the amazing dealer network with NEEO’s experience in the interaction devices category we feel will lead to the best experience possible. We will have the honor to continue the journey as part of this public company and work with awesome smart home gurus such as Charlie Kindel (Image) who joined Control4 from Amazon, where he previously led the Alexa efforts for the smart home.

Planet NEEO

As I anticipate my new role in the Control4 family, it is with a big smile but also a heavy heart I’m writing my last blog post here. I want to thank everyone who was part of the NEEO journey, especially all of you who were our biggest supporters and so crazy active here on the planet. Speaking about that - Planet NEEO will stay. You made it such a powerful knowledge base and fun place to hang out. You will notice that we change it a little bit to boost the features that matter and sunset those which are no longer needed. The team will remain available for you here.

I believe many of you understand this change, but I’m also convinced there is a bit of sadness involved for many of us. We totally understand that you don’t want your NEEO to stop working. Some of you may be interested in doing more – providing support or development work for current NEEO customers. We are open to discussions if you have an interest. We can’t promise anything, yet we are open for all discussions. You have ideas in that regard? You want to be part of that future? Let us know your thoughts over here!

The (last) One

I mentioned above that there won’t be any more NEEO’s available from today on. There is one small exception. One lucky winner will get the very last unit, signed by the team and with a certificate of authenticity. All you need to do in order to win is posting a comment anywhere on Planet NEEO during the next 48h.

You beautiful people and inhabitants of Planet NEEO are simply the best. I’m thankful and honored having been part of this journey with you.

THANK YOU!

Raphael

Andri Hadorn you crap! just joined a day before the announcement and left exactly one comment! Shame on @Neeo  and shame on Raphael , that's even below my current oppinion of you, and honestly, that's way below zero... What a false statement and dirty move all in all. You know what? I just wish you one thing: someone may treat you in the future the same way you did with us, blow sugar up your arse and then kick you full throttle to where it really hurts, you false preacher!

  • Wow...

Not sure how you can sleep at night on this one...I get that $ has a big influence on people's thinking but taking kickstarter funds from all these people...most of whom aren't using Control4 or have any intent to and then so quickly stabbing them in the back is hard to swallow...If you need cash there are lot's of ways to raise it in the current market...especially for a company like NEEO with a cool product in a growing niche with a large and enthusiastic customer base...sorry but there's no other way to describe this but a sellout...instead you went from "we're a world class direct to consumer product company" to "*$#@& off! we're a distributor only integrator product company"

    ...shame

    Was für ein sch... Tag.

  • We went from huge delays to imperfect software with hardware that didn’t anticipate Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or particularly RF and now sells out to a company that caters to the rich.  We went from “the people’s” remote via Kickstarter to just another toy for the rich (although they’ll need a lot of work to get it to work right).  Man, I wish I would have taken a refund ages ago.  Now I have a $250 Remote that kind of controls Apple TV and can switch between sources.  Oh, and can control volume.  What a bust!   And done on the backs of the Everyman via Kickstarter.

  • Raphael How can you sleep at night having done this to the same people that gave you the opportunity to build it in the first place?

How many investors would you have got if you'd pitched a remote that is for professional installers only?

  • Instead of giving me ANOTHER useless remote as a going away present, why don’t you give me a refund of my Kickstarter pledge.

  • I guess ( I am not a lawyer) they have to find a solution to provide us a solution. I hardly can believe it's legel to sell a product in the knowing that this product brake down after the warranty is over.

  • Now I know why being more careful on Kickstarter was a good idea.
Good for you, sad for us.
I really miss to see how good remote this could have evolved to ...

  • Raphael, as with many others, when I decided to “invest” in the NEEO kickstarter campaign, I assumed the risk that the technology wouldn’t work and there might never be a usable product at all.  However, I never anticipated a working product, albeit with many flaws and shortcomings, would be intentionally killed off to advance your personal gain.

Your gleeful attitude reflected in your announcement is shockingly tone-deaf to the community who patiently supported you and the NEEO organization.  Should you ever decide to dumb your wife for a young woman might I suggest you avoid a similar attitude as displayed here, and not say, “Hey, great news!  I found a young babe with great tits and a tight ass!  Lucky me!!”

That‘s exactly what is the sadest part of all: a kick in the groin with a happy face and the words „Hey my friend and supporter (aka money donkey), here‘s something for you that makes me feel better and I don‘t give a shit on how you feel!“

  • i get that there is calculated risk, when backing something on kickstarter. but what about screwing people who bought the product on your website, who now have a worthless piece of junk standing in their shelves. at least, you could have made sure, there was a backup plan, when the servers shut down.

  • Calling us “Friends” on the introduction to this update is simply INSULTING BEYOND BELIEF!!!!.

Why don’t you be honest for a change & admit you are shafting us all after we paid  upfront for a good looking but operating wise  second rate remote & does not even match the current Harmony Elite.
We waited & waited & waited for our delivery which was constantly delayed & you could not even deliver on simple requests like having the time showing on the touchscreen.

You must be skipping & laughing all the way to the Bank.

I’d also like a refund but I very much doubt that is in your business plan now you’ve utilised our money to bring OUR remote to life, please prove me wrong that you have some moral backbone & offer a refund?.

  • I'm really disappointed! It feels like you betrayed your KS-Supporters, who made this product it possible.

I love the community driven aspect of neeo and hope it doesn't dies after this sellout...

Neeo would have died anyway. It is sad how it is handled with no dignity.  I guess they upsell themselves to control4 as well.

And Jeff  asking all those questions and still expecting unhappy backers to do testing for free. Just use us bit more.

Jeff I am sorry too but I am not sure that you can help. At least I didn't get any help I was promised.

Maybe you have good intentions but just do not have right tools. Anyway it is too late. No more hope.

    • Jeff you worked for a company with questionable ethics in regards to their customers. You had two options ,either you´re with them or you dont . play by the rules or beeing a responsible person and quit.

      your choice is clear.

    • Daniel Sütel Maybe he got the news the way we did.  I don't think, given the sneaky nature of Raphaël, the lies he told everyone and the absolute disconnection from the real world he displays, the staff got the message months before we did.  Maybe he's just looking for a new job and in the meantime he tries to make the best of the situation he's in?  I think, in this whole story, there's just one really bad apple that developed a gigantic ego over the past few years.  We can only hope it comes to bite him in the ass once Control4 sees he's just a clown with no real substance or know how.

    • Frederik Vancoillie Rephael starts as a senior director at control4 , all employees will be given contracts at control4. Assumption is this will come with a pay raise which is significant. Jeff will be very happy at the moment.

the problem is and which they may not recognize now is that if a hotter girl will come aorund the corner in the future control4 will not hesitate to treat them as they treated their customers (us) before.

Sadly, from my experience this is business which is executed in 90% of the business field today.

Ethics, non to confuse with compliance , is a minor priority nowadays

    • Daniel Sütel We don't know if every employee is given a contract.  As I don't believe a word Raphaël has ever spoken, his blog post here is probably totally untrue.  I think NEEO has never been profitable, the speed at which the product and firmware was made has never been good and the company just completely blew the backer's money.  I don't think a company like Control4 would be willing to take over employees that only accomplished this in the years they were in business.  Also, there's probably lots of overlap in staff and I don't think Control4 would need more community managers for instance.

    • Frederik Vancoillie True, normally within european countries the local laws require some sort of agreement in favour to the employees in case the company is bought by a bigger one. I myself have been part of M&A ´s in the past.

The whole approach was risky to say the least thats why I suspect that collecting backers money rise fast and sell was the idea and target from the first day NEEO was founded.

Will we ever find out ? I hope so but there are so many broken promisies and lies around it will be hard to find the truth.

  • 🤦‍♂️ Hoffentlich sind wenigstens nach den 24 Monaten noch die Grundfunktionen nutzbar und man kann vorhandene Rezepte anpassen/ ändern. Vielleicht macht ja Control4 was ordentliches draus. Definitiv menschlich schwach die treuen Nutzer und Käufer bis zur letzten Sekunde hinzuhalten ☝️

    Tschau 🙋🏼‍♂️

  • This guy just released a post with a smile on his face exclaiming it as wonderful news. All the while, he sold his soul for a paycheck after making promises on a product which the market lifted to new heights. All to have that customer base have the carpet pulled from under their feet.

As an estate manager doing home updates daily, I can attest that Control 4 is one of the junkiest, clunkiest platforms you can ever invest in. My AV guys won’t even touch it for service even if they have the ability to open the programming up. If you ever invest money in automation, choose Savant or secondly Crestron. The fact they sold out to Control 4 is even more troubling as C4 is not a market leader, they are essentially the ‘Pinto’ of automation. They acquired it to squash a competitor, straight up. If you can’t see that, you need to see the bigger picture here. NEEO scammed each and every person who invested in their product and the owner is a massive Sell-Out.
