NEEO dead?

Since the latest updates on the software and blog date back to August and there is no clear roadmap, the question whether NEEO has unfortunately died a premature death is becoming relevant.

In case the company doesn’t survive:

  • is there a way to run the configuration services locally, or are we dependent on the cloud services?
  • will NEEO publish the firmware and cloud services as open source when the company goes out of business?

  • Sander Jongeleen Thank you for posting this. While not all releases follow the same timeline (even though we try) does not mean that we’re not working on better improving NEEO ;).

Our team is always working hard to improve NEEO and release cool features we can all enjoy.

Our next release is right around the corner :). Let me know if you have any specific questions.

    • Jeff I think the votes show prettig clearly what users want to see.(?)

Since voting doesn’t seem to lead to much progress though, one starts wonder what cool stuff is really being worked on.

Not even simple things like renaming buttons and changing icons seem to get implemented: this shouldn’t take months or even years? Many of the projects listed in “an overview of all user written projects” have seen the last commits about a year ago: not much going on on the SDK front apparently. Bluetooth, HomeKit? UI redesign? Roon Integration?

I have got the basics working in my own setup (with some API implementation, and a little integration with Domoticz). This means NEEO has value for me, also in its current state. And I honestly do hope we will see good things coming.

But since there is so little progress, very little activity on the Facebook page or website, one starts to get doubts. Hence my question on whether NEEO remains usable if things do not go as we all hope.

Sander Jongeleen I completely agree with you and I personally would feel the same way with the lack of blog posts on our end.

I will reach out to our development team and see which features from our idea voting section will be implemented next.

In either case, I can assure we are all still here :).

      Thanks!

    • Jeff Well, let’s if a reasonable part (like the top 25?) of the features most voted for get implemented in a next release in the coming month then.

When exactly can we expect your post on this?

Sander Jongeleen The plan is always to implement all voted features should they be doable and obviously make sense. The idea behind the voting section is to help prioritize. I don’t believe we will release a software update with 25 new features.

  • I for my part would like to know a) why Alexa and b) Homekit (I know homekit never was officially supported) Integration stopped working from one day to the other although they DID work fine for a while and why my remote every week or so just doesn't control any of my devices. When this happens remote & brain SEEM to do as usual but obviously no IR commands are being sent to any device.  Since Months.

So far my Neeo does everything my Harmony did - just not as reliable. But better looking.

It has absolutely no extra value for me in the smart home.  When I just recently stated I might bring back the old harmony family said "yay, that'd be so much better and easyer understandable"... and that's sad, cause I like NEEO.

Same for the Batterylife. It's ok-ish. I can live with it. But it's soooooo freaking far away from what was promised. Just as my harmony I'll put NEEO every evening into the dock. Using 20-50% of it's charge is the usual case every day...

For me as a customer there're so many little things not quite working or missing or not quite achieving what I'm expecting. Like having to fuss with a recipe for my record player cause it just cannot be switched off as it has no IR code and as nobody at NEEO after MONTHS and for sure thousands of requests doesn't manage to switch off any unused device. That's also bad if we talk about energy consumption.

  • Thank you Jeff for showing us that there is still hope for Neeo. Just to know that you are here to reply this kind of questions, gives me hope. Great to hear the good news about an upcoming upgrade:-)

Tord Solheim Of course :). We need to do a better job at posting more blogs to keep everyone here more engaged. I appreciate your vote of confidence.

  • I agree with this post. This is a 400 dollar remote, and we expect better service when it comes to user requests. Every product has a shelf life, after a while the product starts to depreciate, batteries get weaker, scratches form on the remote/screen (regular wear and tear). After paying 400 bucks we still have to wait for years for features to be released?

So when do you plan to push more features? After the remote has worn off?

I see the voting thread has hundreds of items listed, and being voted for.. but nothing is being implemented? Firmware updates with features on such an expensive piece of product that has a shelf life should be pushed out often. Dozens of remotes are coming out every year, and they are doing much better when it comes to support. Even a basic thermostat like nest is not supported, and no admins/dev has not responded to thousands of calls made by members asking for updates.

So now we are to run various sdk command lines in our computers to make this remote work?

This product is treated like a true kickstarter product.. Sell stories, get a fantastic design to work on the product, release the an eye candy product without features, and then forget about it.. move on to the next crowd funding project.

I am about to return as most of my devices complain "ouch" and call the product "stupid", how about saying we are incompetent and do not know how to go about from here?

Why dont you hire proper developers and finish what you started in the first place. give us a robust platform.. this metallic pipe is literally useless without function.

Just so everyone knows here, the team here in the US is doing a fantastic job on the forum, on helpdesk etc.. but I have doubts about the European management and development teams. Does Raphael even care about this product and its users anymore?

Alex Hi Alex. I want to start off by apologizing for our lack of communication to our user base. I know it’s difficult to believe, but our entire staff in Europe is working very hard to make things happen.

Feel free to DM directly and I can work with you immediately over the phone to get you up and running.

I look forward to your response.

      Thanks,

    • Jeff Offering to answer DMs isn't good enough. How about you make a public post explaining:

      1. Is the company still alive? How many full time developers do you actually have? Is all the money gone? It looks like you are a dead company. Numbers please.
      2. When is the next release due?
      3. What is your feature roadmap? Do you even have one?
      4. When will you implement the kickstarter features?

It's hard to have hope at the moment. The customer experience is very weak indeed.

  • I have been away from NEEO for awhile for other reasons, but I found it strange I have not seen any email update about any new firmware. Happened to check planet neeo and see this thread. Hope everything is ok with the company. Looking forward to what may roll out with the next big update. I miss reading about all the updates, features, and fixes the team was currently working on at that time. 👍

Aaron Ranson Hi Aaron. Our plan is to release a new firmware update in the next few weeks. Everything is okay and I let our team know we need to do a better job at communicating with you all.

    • Jeff the NEEO staff appears to be very well trained in not giving any specific answers 😉

Can you please simply answer the two questions in my opening post of this thread?

There are currently (only) 5 items in the voting section with status “planned”, all older than one year. The statement for changing icons for recipes was “in the work” already a year ago. Same for hue color control or groundbreaking functionality like putting the time in the title bar. More significant items don’t seem to reach status planned at all.

I really hope company and product are OK, but will need to see a little faster progress on the product development side to believe it.

I appreciate your concerns and love how active you guys are on Planet NEEO. I can assure you guys everything is fine and our team is focusing on firmware updates, new features etc. There is no need to for these conspiracy theories that the company is dead or dying. NEEO is very much thriving and our Swiss engineering team is doing an amazing job.

If we can keep posts and threads to constructive feedback and discussions, that would be amazing. Such posts as this one are not particularly constructive. We post blogs and updates when we release firmware updates. As always, if you guys have any questions feel free to ping me directly.

In the voting section, if it is labeled as planned this means our engineering team has created what we call a story for it. Even though we do not have exact dates or timeframes as to when these features will be released, rest assured they will be. I know it's not an ideal answer, but that is the nature of the beast.

So with this being said, I will archive this post. Please DM if you have any specific questions.

    -Jeff
