Revox B Series Commands not working

I'm owning the following Revox devices: B-285 (Tuner & Amplifier), B-225 (CD-Player), B-226 Signature (CD-Player), B-215 (Tape Deck). I bought Neeo after ensuring that all of the above devices are fully supported which was confirmed by Neeo.

Unfortunately none of the commands are working (I currently can only test the Receiver B-285 and the B-226 CD Player. I already am/was in contact with Jose Ortiz who even added a couple of commands to the B-285, but with no luck on my end. From a user experience side:
- test commands after adding a device don't work

- turning on the device when launching a recipe does not work

- Testing individual commands from the active device's shortcut menu (after having manually powered on the device) also don't work.

On the original remotes often two buttons had to be pressed at the same time to trigger the proper function on the CD Players or Tape Deck. And some of the keys on the devices had a double function in the sense that e.g. pushing Play on the CD-Player also turns on the device.

Hereby the information I shared with Jose:

---------------------------------------------------------------

I did some research and was successful with it. Although the original manufacturer went bankrupt, I found an ftp-server where all the original operating and service manuals can be downloaded.

For your records: ftp://ftp.studer.ch/public/products/Revox (losing in as Guest, no password).

The following documents are useful (all multi-lingual German, English and French)

  • Revox_IR-Remote/Revox_IR_Remote_System_Serv.pdf (52.1 MB): most comprehensive overview, including commands and IR codes (covers IR transmitters B201/B201CD/B205)
  • Revox_B208/Revox_B208_Op_HR.pdf (16.2 MB): covers the newer IR transmitter B208
  • Revox_B208/Revox_B208_Sign_Op.pdf (3.2 MB): covers the CD only IR transmitter of the B208n family specifically designed to accompany the B226 Signature anniversary edition CD player
  • Revox_B285-B286/Revox_B285-B286_Serv.pdf (260.1MB): service manual of AV Receiver
  • Revox_B226_B126/Revox_B226_Serv.pdf (63.9 MB): service manual of the B-226 CD player (almost identical to B-226 Signature)
  • Revox_B225/Revox_B225_Serv.pdf (131.8 MB): service manual of the B-225 CD player
  • Revox_B215/Revox_B215_Serv.pdf (35.8 MB): service manual of the B-215 Tape Deck

The same link also allows to download the operating manuals. All Revox devices are supposed to be in stand-by mode (meaning not physically switched off from power).

The devices are automatically turned on by various commands (no specific turn on command), like for instance start playing track 1 (CD-Player) or switching to CD input (AV receiver)

There is an explicit turn off command that switches off all devices

Depending on IR transmitter the control of some devices (eg CD player) requires pressing of an additional button to indicate the CD player as target device

Unfortunately the documents are too big in size to be sent by email. You can either download all of them (and all the other original documentation from the manufacturer) by yourself, or I can upload it to your servers if you provide me an upload link.

Many thanks for your feedback and for the IR commands. We already have this document and created commands out of the. Unfortunately, they did not work for another user.

Also, did you already try our IR test in the other post?

The Live IR Test works the following way:

    1. Navigate to the Settings Menu in your NEEO app.
    2. Navigate to NEEO Brain.
    3. Click on "Live IR Test".
    4. Enter into the text field the following code: 7haaki9DR5
    5. Test the commands

    Thanks for testing!

    • Hi Andy , I jut tested them.

As my 215 broke down and is in revision i can't test many of the commands. From all the buttons I pressed 208 POWER OFF worked, but nothing else.

The equipment I currently have available is the B-226 Signature and the B-285

    • Andy is there any update on this? Do you have an idea about the cause why the commands are not working and is NEEO working on getting all the commands fixed?

    •  Andy I would appreciate an update on this. I mainly bought NEEO in order to being able to control my Revox equipment, which currently does not seem to work. You had asked me to do the "Live IR Test" which I conducted 3 weeks ago, but haven't heard back from you yet.

Please excuse the very long delay. We already tried a lot of different solutions for this device (and some other Revox devices) with another customer. Unfortunately, nothing worked. We are in contact with Revox since a while. But we don't have a solution yet. Anyway, I'll create a Live IR Test with all possible solutions. Hopefully, you get other results than the other customer.

I'm very sorry that we struggle to get a device from such a standard manufacturer working. But I'm sure, in the end we will get this working.

    • Andy Yes I was surprised about the status, especially as I came across the original Revox documentation which seemed to be pretty extensive and complete. What still doesn't make sense to me though is, that the Live command you had provided to me to turn the B285 off worked whereas the NEEO command for turning the device off doesn't. I really hope you get it to work. The Revox devices are (besides the Sony TV) the only devices I meant to control by NEEO, so not that useful yet ;-)

Good news! Revox finally sent us all their codes - including the ones for your devices. Still, I don't agree with the selection of these codes. They offer e.g TRACK NEXT (called NEXT on the NEEO) for tape players for example. Or CURSOR RIGHT, but no other cursor command. Also, they have two slightly different codes for the 215 tape - TAPE 1 and TAPE 2. And for the B285, there's no power command. But it looks like any input command does power on the device.
Please delete all Revox devices and re-add them. We assigned completely new drivers. Even if something is still wrong, after this, an update will be sufficient. But for now, delete and re-add them. We are definitely getting closer, but I don't think everything is perfect now. Let me know about any issues you are experiencing. Thanks!

I confirm, the Revox library is not working !

Neeo say to often that it works with this and this brand. It's partially true because sometimes (I hope) of the time the codes are available but... incomplete or not working; it's bad... 👎

By chance all those problems could be solved by software updates. But when (enough ressources despite the V2)?

I'm newbie on this product but I have a strange feeling🤔. Some code are complex and need time but it's absolutely not the case for Revox. Why Neeo botches this work 😡?

It's a pity because the product is very well made...

We are actually still struggling with some Revox devices, that's correct. Unfortunately, Revox codes are not standard straight forward commands. They are for the new products, but the old ones, like the B-series, are not. Not even Revox was able to explain the codes used for the older devices. We have the official documentation form Revox for the B-Series. Still, these codes are not made in any way known to us. And as said, not even Revox knew how to handle these codes. Also, learning was not successful - because of the same issue that prevents us from converting the codes from the official sheets into working commands.

If you have any other issue or miss any other device, let me know.

    • Hi @Andy,

🤔 sorry but I can't believe what you say!

This code is really easy and well documented!!! What kind of problem do you have?

I already developed an interface between my HA to Revox and it works fine!!!!

If you need some technical help, please tell me !

Other problem is Bang Olufsen codes. Not well done, everything is not working correctly (I already wrote that on the blog; and I can also help you). It's anoying because Beo is the heart of my system and if I can't not control the heart, I canot use the Neeo! 😭

Two other wishes is relative to Z-wave devices:

      - Fibaro eye sensor. To get the temperature from the eye sensor, and display it!

      - For Qubino 3 phases Smart meter, get the measured values and display it. And relay control (it can control an external relay)

IR/ZWAVE libraries is the challenge for Neeo. If people are disappointed they will stop using your product. I am aware it's an enormous job!!!

But I love this product and it really could be THE BEST remote!!! 👍👏

Of course we would be glad to be able to support the B-series Revox devices. Which exact Revox device do you own? I'll look into the codes again, see again what I can do.

Regarding Bang & Olufsen - please see my reply to your post.

Z-Wave devices - Can you please add both of it to the idea voting section here on Planet NEEO? For the Fibaro sensor, you can add it here: https://planet.neeo.com/t/q5ktxn/fibaro-motion-sensor

For the Qubino 3, please add this as a new idea. Make sure to explain what features exactly you would like to see.

There was a major overhaul of the Revox codes in January this year. Additionally, I have checked again every code today. There where done a lot more changes today. In the meantime, we have the official infrared library by Revox. All B-series devices that where added to our database should work.

If anybody still does experience some issues: As there where many changes over time, including very recent changes, I would like to ask you to delete the current Revox devices on NEEO and re-add them. Then, test again. If you still see some bugs, let me know. We'll do our best to look into it again.

Keep in mind, there was changed a lot even today. So, even if you have recently checked the functionality, give it another try. Also, a simple device update will not be sufficient in most cases. Deleting and re-adding the device is mandatory.

Here's a detailed list of supported devices:

      - B-Series:

B215 (they have offered two driver version. That's why we have two versions in our DB)
      B22
      B225
      B226
      B226-S
      B25
      B250
      B250-S
      B26
      B260
      B260-S
      B285
      B291

The following devices where added. But POWER ON is missing. Is it correct, that these devices are powered on with sending an input command? Without POWER ON or POWER TOGGLE, our power handling will not work very well. These models are:

      B250
      B285

Additionally, the following B-series devices where added with the manufacturer codes - but we are not 100% sure if the codes are correct. They seem to use the B208 and RC28 remotes. Therefore, they should work, too. These are:

      B126
      B150
      B160
      B240-S
      B251
      B261

There are of course other Revox devices besides the B-series.

Also supported via manufacturer provided codes:

      Joy CD Spieler
      Voxnet

Additionally, the following devices where added with the manufacturer codes - but we are not 100% sure if the codes are correct:

      E450
      E460
      H6
      H7

Also supported, but via other code sources:

      Elegance S-27 DVD Player
      Evolution
      M100
      M37
      M51
      S22
      S25
      S26

Regarding the struggles we had obtaining and learning the codes - If you would like to know what the issues where and why Revox-protocol IR codes caused issues, let me know. I'll contact you via direct message. The issues where concerning the old B-series models.

      Hope this helps!

      B250
      B285

On B series no power on code. Often "Enter" do the job !

Power off code is the same for B2xx B1xx. No power toggle !!!

Additionally, the following B-series devices where added with the manufacturer codes - but we are not 100% sure if the codes are correct. They seem to use the B208 and RC28 remotes. Therefore, they should work, too. These are:

      B126
      B150
      B160
      B240-S
      B251
      B261

That's not correct. All are ok with B208 not RC28. RC28 use RC5 code!

Probably those devices use the RC28:

      Joy CD Spieler
      Voxnet

      E450
      E460
      H6
      H7

      Elegance S-27 DVD Player
      Evolution
      M100
      M37
      M51
      S22
      S25
      S26

But I'm not an expert for those "new" devices and don't own any! Probably someone else could tell you more information!

Andy send me by PM your power off timing for B2xx! I'll check it!

Many thanks for the additional info. I'll add ENTER as Power on for the B2xx and B1xx devices.

The newer models all use RC5 codes. They are pretty standard and will work for sure. The issue we have are with the older devices that use the B208 remote which is based on the Revox IR protocol. There are several ways on how we can convert them. It's although possible that we have to convert differently. Please let me know which exact B-series devices you own. I'll create a Live IR Test and you can test which version works. Once we know which version we have to take, I'm pretty sure all will be fine. The codes from Revox are 100% correct, it's just a matter of converting them correctly. Thanks!

    • Andy It really strange how do manage/reverse engineering IR codes.

That looks like in one risky do-it-yourself!!!

Once you simply copy an other universal remote into you database. If it's not ok you try again with an another model... where is the reverse engineering you told us ?

You get all Revox informations about IR coding.

Your job is to generate the right pattern to get the right waveform!!

For me those sentences are only claptrap!

Program it and put scope or logic analyser at the output, Check if waveform are the same. If yes it must be ok !

When your waveform are ok, you can send me a live IR code for power off, if you need to be sure!

Input Tuner was just added as POWER ON. As this changes the power mode, I recommend to delete and re-add the device. The new data appears around 12AM CET. Let me know if everything works.

Also, are the inputs working correct? Our sources indicate these inputs. But we e.g. have no INPUT DVD. As the device is modular, it's a bit tricky anyway to add the correct inputs. Let me know, we'll try to improve it if something is missing or wrong.

What we never have asked you - The B series Revox devices need an IR adapter in order to work with an IR remote. Which one do you have connected? The original one with the B-Remote or the 3rd party version? I'm asking cause the 3rd Party dongle uses Sony VCR codes, not Revox. The 3rd-party device is this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Wireless-Remote-Adapter-for-Revox-B215-H1-Studer-A721-with-Universal-Remote-/290706740755 or here for more info https://github.com/Wolbolar/IPSymconNEEO/blob/master/docs/de/README.md .

We now know why no B-Series device worked with NEEO. The Revox IR protocol that is used for this series doesn't follow the guidelines every modern software, IR learner, remote follows. The carrier frequency is missing, but is expected by todays devices and software.

As we are currently working with Revox and other related companies on this, we learned about ways that could still get them working. Right now, a B-Series devices and remote is on the way to our office. As soon as we got it, I can finally figure out how the codes have to built and formatted in order to be compatible with the old Revox protocol and the modern world at the same time. I'm pretty sure we'll get this working as soon as we have the B-Series device here.

As the Holidays are close I don't know for sure if the device will arrive at our office this year. But I'll keep you updated more regularly. I'll let you know as soon as the device arrives here.

We have now corrected all B-Series device. We where working closely together with Revox and the codes where tested.

As there where a lot of changes, please delete and re-add the devices.

Also, as the Revox protocol uses very high frequencies, like B&O, also with them, the Brain needs to be very close in order to work with the codes. If possible, the brain or receiver should be maximum a couple of centimeters away from the IR receiver of the device.

  • Today I've updated my NEEO Brain @Yell (Remote is still trying to update), deleted all devices via mobile App and started to add my Sony TV and my Revox Devices. But as stated in the Email sent to you directly  Andy  I did not have any success!

First it's not clear which device to configure, because you offer choice for almost all of my devices:
    - B285 AUDIO & B285 TUNER (although it's one device, a Receiver)
    - B215 TAPE 1 and B215 TAPE 2 (again there is only one device B215)
    - B208 in 4 flavours (B208 was a Remote control that was release in 2 versions)

As @Yellow Sky points out those devices never required an IR adapter. Only older devices and the turntable required an extra device (not sure whether it was B203). There were 2 other remote control devices available from Revox to control the devices: B201 and B205 (I owned the latter one)

With respect to POWER ON: Revox devices of the B-series do have a big power on/off toggle button. But in addition to that other buttons also trigger a power on event:
    - with B285: clicking any input source (TUNER, PHONO, DISC, TAPE1, TAPE2)
    - with B226: clicking PAUSE, PLAY/NEXT, LOAD
    - with B215: clicking PLAY (not sure whether also PAUSE & STOP, because my device is currently broken)

The documentation I had provided contained all of the information with respect to what commands are available and what actions get triggered.

No test command is working for me, no matter how close I am to the Remix device. Help is needed. Anyone else with Revox equipment managed to get it work?

PS: for watching TV I need to get the Revox receiver started, for listening to CDs I also need the Revox receiver getting started and the same holds true for the tape. But when listening to radio I only need the receiver to get started (not sure why there is an Audio and Tuner version of the device)

      The following device are supported:

      B150
      B160
      B200
      B203
      B215
      B22
      B225
      B226
      B226-S
      B240-S
      B25
      B250
      B250-S
      B251
      B26
      B260
      B260-S
      B261
      B285
      B291

Additionally, we have added the commands from the B208 remote that works for most B-Series devices. It's very simply sorted:

B208 AUDIO   - For the AUDIO part, the amplifier part. All audio device controlled with B208.
B208 PHONO - All phono devices
B208 TAPE - All tape devices
B208 TUNER - All tuner devices

      Regarding power -

For most B-Series devices, the power button only powers them off. The input commands power them on in most cases. We have already added the correct commands as power on commands and also added them as inputs etc. What is your exact question?

We also got a complete documentation from Revox with all commands and what they actually do. They are already added the correct way. No matter what was written on the original remote, we added them under the name of the button action it actually executes. E.g. for the phono device we didn't add them as cursor commands, we added them as ARM LEFT, ARM RIGHT, etc.

For your question on what you should add - simply add the device that resemble your model name and add all the parts you need. If you never listen to radio, you don't have to add the TUNER part, only the AUDIO part is needed, etc. For a more detailed explanation on how NEEO handles combo devices, please see here: https://planet.neeo.com/t/y72nbz/howto-add-combo-devices

The brain or extender really has to be very, very close. Revox also uses very high carrier frequencies, like B&O.
