IR Learning Capability?

For those random devices or cases where there's IR functions not covered by what you've loaded in for a particular device, is there a way to just learn a custom command on our own (most universal remotes) without having to request it?

  • I'm pinning this here so you don't have to search trough all the scattered pieces of information:

I absolutely understand where this question is coming from. Here is the story: The brain does have he capability to capture infrared codes, it's not exposed in the UI though at this point. Of corse we will make this feature available in a future firmware release. I will explain why we have prioritised other functions over this:

    1. We knew we already have a working solution to get all IR gear supported, with the large database we have built, with the awesome and fast service the driver team provides and the live IR testing functionality that allows support like not seen on any product in the industry.

    2. We like the fact that the driver team does things for you - so it's convenient and the integration is much deeper that just learning codes. We completely profile the devices with all necessary timings, physical inputs etc. so recipes can automatically be built.

    3. We deeply believe the learning capability should really just be the last resort and we would only want some of you to use it for really weird products no one else has ;)

    4. We want the entire community to benefit from quality drivers so we love working with you to make it perfectly working for you but also for anyone else who has that device.

I hope this gives you some good background info of why and how it's done. There we simply hundreds of things on our developers plate that we priorities because they were more relevant for the foundation of the product and the stability and security. We will unlock the IR receiver as well but as said above - we really want it to be the last resort and it should NOT be what most people use. Thanks

    • Raphael I understand you prefer native database support over IR learning, however as we have seen, it does not work reliably for all devices and Andy and the team will have all their hands and heads full to keep up with the requests now that more and more devices end up with backers and pre orders. Here's a suggestion:

Why not take the backing community as a tool to help to get NEEO over the beta status it's currently in and improve the database? IR learning is already integrated but not unlocked. You can accept backers (currently all members of this community to deliberately join a program or give them a IR input test code. If we could "upload" IR codes via the learning feature it would help Andy to squash bugs and add new devices on the fly woithout communication interaction.

      1. EG one types in a device and it is not found: You could launch a input screen which asks to press the power on, then power off (if it's a stupid device you would have to press the toggle for on and off). then volume up/down, channel up down this should be enough to see if a matching device is in the database and suggest the hits. if nothing is found proceed with requesting button description and learn the keys or just allow to break off and  upload a request - you already know the device name and basic instrcuctions through the user which can get you started to find the full code for that device. At least you can look up the set of commands and next time someone wants to add this device you can ask to add some keys that are not known yet. This means the more poular a device is, the sooner you will have it integrated.

      2. Device is found but not working as expected (Samsung BD-F6900 in my case), launch the troubleshoot from device which brings up the button set - press the button that is not working, then learn the code froom IR and upload - next time the device will be troubleshot. If there are iterations of one device that may use different codes the troubleshhott can offer the variations reported by the customer base.

This would btw also help inc ases people do not know the exact model no. of their unit (I had to pull the devices out of the shelf myself to read exact model of TV - which was not found - and BluRay/cabletuner -which does not work)

This way you will have some IR learning but time after time the necessity will eliminate itself.

Klaus Grosser We will be going in the direction you are describing. I assume this will be a process, so not coming all at once. The first step could be to allow learning and sending it to  Andy , this way we can already make sure no devices/users get left our because we can not find the correct commands. From that on it will further evolve to something similar of what you noted.

    • Patrick appreciated your response and yes, I think that would be a good compromise, because one wouldn't have to go through ALL buttons to learn a device. Possibly @Andy could determine  a keyset that is characteristic to identify most devices and ask the user just to enter these (with possibly at least storing power and volume locally so the user can at least go and use the most basic commas immediately).

Hi Raphael, I understand what you are saying, but this means for me now that I can‘t  use Neeo till you support my devices...

A long while back I asked for support of my cable TV box Kathrein UFH 965sw, and great it is on the list of supported devices. However the commands don‘t work.

I really would like to be able to have the brain quickly learn the commands I need, otherwise I will have to go through the long process of you guys supporting my hardware, Does this really scale for you/us?

So far I think NEEO is a great device and very nicely engineered, but being stuck during the setup process is frustrating.

      Kind regards, Roger/ Uesslingen

Raphael Hi, some of your customers such as i, dont live in the US and we have devices that are not sold in the US, it's impossible to use NEEO with these devices unless it has IR learning capability as your team will not be able to provide the support. I for one has bought NEEO with the expectation of such a function to be included out of the box. Hope to see IR learning capabilities unlocked ASAP

    • Kheng KH Why they need such devices to be able to support them? If you provide them the manufacturer and the Device ID, they can search online for the required codes and also ask the manufacturer. This is how they support most of the devices. Also they are able to search on google for codes i guess...

Second part is, NEEO is not only in the US. The main IR-Database Enigneer is located in Solothurn Swiss.

      Jimmy Revtorp  Hello!

Can you please try the following: Open NEEO application via mobile device> Tap on the Menu on the top right corner ☰> Tap on NEEO Brain> Tap Live IR Test> Enter the following code: fkgoxc8UNM > Tap Load ‘em and test the commands.

Also, be sure that the NEEO Brain is in line of sight of all your IR devices. The NEEO Remote does not emit IR, the Brain performs all these actions.

I am the founder of CBCC Domotique, creator and maker of the Swiid Z-Wave devices and I would like to join - on a personal basis - the long queue of users requesting an IR learn mode for the NEEO and to take serious issue with Raphael's arguments supporting his statement that "IR learning should be the last resort".

To date, your NEEO users are probably mostly techies and they are the ones who are most likely to have oddball IR devices, including older devices for which the brand (sometimes private label) may no longer even exists.  It seems to me a Sisyphean task to want to cover all the IR remotes and keep the coverage up to date.  Not only a Sisyphean task but also largely a pointless one , as an end-user with multiple remotes uses on a fraction of the keys on each individual one : e.g. channel keys on a TV are useless when you have to have a set-top box.

We have had a NEEO for some months now and, after having let my more technically-minded colleagues play with it, it is now my turn to have it and to keep it for my personal home use.  I have a home cinema room with 9 different IR-controlled AV devices and 10 Z-Wave devices.  For some years now, I have been controlling all of them one-by-one with a single clunky Remotec ZURC-550.  Major problem is that is cannot cope with recipes (scenes in Z-Wave speak).  So I was really looking forward to NEEO !!!

How disappointed I am !  Out of my 9 IR-controlled AV devices, only one (1) is listed, for five (5) the brands are listed (including Philips, Samsung and Sony) but not the specific model and as to the remaining three (3) brands, they are unknown in your database …  Not a great batting average and quite difficult to square with Raphael's statement that you have a "working solution to get all IR gear supported".

Would you really advise for me to send 9 remotes to you in Solothurn ?  Surely, this has to be uneconomic both for NEEO and for me.

Keep up the great work and upgrade IR learning in your priority file.

      Cheers

    • Bernard SAINTE-MARIE It is not even neccessary to do so. The Database can also get enhanced without any Remotes send (this is only the last way something can be integrated)

If you like your Devices beeing added, open up a topic and let the NEEO Team know all Details for the missing devices. Then type in an @ followed by the name Andy and select the one with the black and withe picture. He is responsible for adding devices to the neeo database and is normally able to implement new remotes within one or two days.

The AC still does not work for some reason. The device is in a straight line of sight with the IR blaster approximately 5 meters away, shouldn't be a problem. Any other suggestions?
The Sky Box (SHR01-700) is working perfectly (thanks for that!) but I could not test the other boxes because they are in the lower level of my house, in this case is there a "Brain Extender" or something that I could reach the whole house with? I have a mesh network with 3 devices/routers which I could use to connect extra devices... How are you guys dealing with two story houses in this case?

We have supplied an IR extender. But this one is wired. As the IR signal is transmitted via a Jack 3.5mm cable, you can make it wireless with an analog audio transmitter. Also, any 3rd party IR transmitter that can be connected at the Jack of the brain should work. But there is no guarantee. We heard of some extenders that doesn't work.

Regarding Midea - we are working on another Midea device for another customer right now. Unfortunately, we had to learn that the driver doesn't work. The main problem is, that the device is so-called mode based. This means that we cannot make this working with the current state of software. I'm very sorry!

Please let me know when you expect to have the Midea AC working... It's the main reason I acquired this remote since all other devices were already connected and possible to control using Alexa... Would be great if the IR learning feature would be available, it would be very helpful with devices with issues like the Midea...

I'm afraid this was a misunderstanding. We cannot make this working with the current state of software - and as the software will not be improved anymore since the acquisition, this means that the Midea will never be supported by NEEO. I'm very sorry, especially as this was the main reason for you to buy a NEEO.

    • Andy I was just going to put up a clear interpretation of your initial answer to Filipe Torsani as I read his erratic believe this getting fixed only while on the plane yesterday and I felt you could/should heve be more precise about the situation you were aware of at the time of ansering him.

As much as I appreciate your continuing effort here for all of us, I think it is inevitably for you to stand up to the fact, that our product has reached end of support other than minimal fixes instead of repeating the massaged PR crap you were provided and apparently asked if not instructed to continue posting by the ones who have abondoned that sinking ship since long. If someone asks for something that you know is not possible you should tell straight away before even advising him to invest further in the product and make him into buying  IR extenders that will be useless as you already jnew at the time of advise.

So, in all fairness, the post would have read more informative and honest something like this :

"Sorry to say, but as we learned support for your system unfortunately cannot  be implemented due to the acquisition through Control4 all further development of the software being canned."

As I understand you are also one of the few that really still DO care about supporting the customers of the ruins what formwerly was known as NEEO with you best intnetion you could add:

"What I however can do for you is adding new  devices as they can be controlled via IR via the current implementation. So, please feel free in asking newly released devices to be added to the database and I will do my best to grow the database until it becomes unavailable by May 2021. As you will be no longer able to add new devices to your Brain, please consider precautiously adding devices of possible interest for you before that timeframe."

Really, adding as many current and newly released devices as you can in the remaining time and provide a list of additions in a separate "New devices added to the IR database"  would the one and only effective support you are able to provide and your customers deserve. I'm not asking for deep testing them, let us do that for you. At the current state this seems to be the only option left gettiign anywhere near what  asked for in his  "Shape the NEEO future" thread (FUTURE! what a sarcastic euphemism that is)

I understand the situation but NEEO is not giving any other solution to its customers... The LEAST that should be done is enabling IR Learning because now I have a Chinese Remote Control that I paid $3 bucks for with this feature and I have a NEEO which I paid 370 USD for and does not... It's so basic, I don't understand why Control4/NEEO would choose to simply leave its customers without any solutions like this with a closed platform that simply will not work like in my case...

IR learning is the LEAST you (as a company) can do for us....

Patrick IR learning is a basic function of universal remotes. When will IR learning be turned on?

About a year ago the NEEO team declined to add my HDMI switch to the list of supported devices & the email reply told me I could have NEEO learn the IR commands when I get the remote.

If IR learning is not possible this remote will be an expensive paperweight.

Or they can source remotes or specs from manufacturers.

It helps NEEO and others to track it more easily. Even if they couldn't find the codes before then I would still add a topic for it. Things might have been changed and they might have access to other sources. Also a photo of the remote sometimes help. hope this helps.

Justin Feinman For the Xfinity X1 device, does that mean that we have added commands which are not actually available?

I will check if we can add your lighting, these remotes are sometimes a bit difficult. Maybe we even have some which already work. I will check with our device driver team which ones you could try. Usually these are called something like "RGB Led...". or "LED Strip..." If you find the time, maybe you can go ahead an check this out until I have further feedback.

    • Patrick I tried the RGB Led and LED Strip ones but didn't get any results unfortunately.

For Xfinity X1 it's the opposite; there's basic functionality that was not added; that being the manual fast forward/rewind.  The 30 second skip/replay functionality is normally part of the X1 system but is more of a convenience than a must-have.

Justin Feinman We have added the commands for the Xfinity X1. They should be available from 5pm PST. Please update your device after that time.

We have not yet found an IR codeset for your LED Lights. I'll do some research, maybe we can find it. If you happen to find it, let us know. I will also check how soon we could publish IR learning, but that will take a bit since it is Sunday today.

    • Patrick Thanks so much!  For the lights, it looks like there's a bunch of different brands that use the same one so I'd imagine it's going to be pretty generic.

    • Justin Feinman Actually, just did some playing around and it seems that the lights do respond to some commands from the "RGB Light Strip" device, but with mixed results.  For an example, the lights have a discrete on and off command, so I'm not able to power them on.  But once take the original and power it on, I'm able to get some functionality however some of the colors and functions are mismatched, don't respond, etc.

Patrick Please let us know when IR learning will be available. I have a similar situation with Domintell smart home IR module ( http://www.domintell.com/gb/products/infra-red-decoding-module ) - more than a year ago I was informed that IR codes are not available from manufacturer and can't be included in the NEEO library. For this reason I need IR learning feature as well.

Arunas M I can not provide a definitive ETA just yet, but we are working on it. If you don't mind, it would be really cool if you could contact the manufacturer, maybe they are willing to give you the codes.

What I don't understand about that device, how do you actually control it now? Does it come with a separate remote, or does it learn commands from existing remotes?

Justin Feinman A lot of these remotes use similar codes, but the again not the very exact same ones. Also they all seem to assign it differently. I will check with our device driver team, now that there is a hint, maybe they can advise on which code sets could work. I assume you already tried the "Bleil LED Flex-Band RGB"?

Patrick This the IR decoding module which decodes IR codes sent by the remote ( http://www.domintell.com/gb/products/infra-red-design-remote-control ). I've contacted the manufacturer to ask for them but if I won't be able to get them the IR learning will be the only way to get full controls.

    • Patrick Hi Patrick, got some really good progress with the RGB Light Strip driver.  The remote has 24 buttons, I was able to find an equivalent mapping for all but 1 ("Strobe", which I could do without).  Attached is my spreadsheet for the mapping as well as a picture of the remote.  The numbering goes row by row; so 1-4 would be the top row of buttons, 5-8 is the second, etc.

Would be awesome to get a secondary driver built as we can't rename the shortcuts yet or to not have to refer to my spreadsheet whenever I want to integrate the lights into a new recipe.

Andy In general the remote sends commands to Domintell smart home system's central unit to initiate specific actions. The central unit module name is DGQG01 ( http://domintell.com/gb/products/central-unit ). But I expect that you should be looking for a Domintell as a vendor ( http://domintell.com/gb ).

Patrick good to hear, I thought so. I actually miss the support of the Kathrein IPC2851 - even that it's in the database the commands are not working. HARMONY does it better (but not perfect, they have some bugs, too).

On the other hand (and far not that urgent): I am really surprised that you support FELLER zeptrion. Thats a Swiss Thing with even different IR modulation frequency than usual RC-devices (your HW seems to be flexible designed :-) ). This support is great to switch on and off lights, but dimming is not yet possible. Long press with repeatded sending of command would solve this. Here I could try to connect you directly to the guys in development at Feller they als worked with HARMONY for this (many years ago).

  • The form to submit devices is broken. Please fix support for Pioneer KRP-500M (the KRP-500, which I don't think is a real product, is in the database, but it's IR codes do not match the input configuration of the KRP-500M). Also please add the Fosmon HD1832 5x1 HDMI switch, the Monoprice HDX-401E 4x1 HDMI switch, the Apple MacMini (which can accept IR codes from the Apple remote, my old Harmony remote, and my current URC remote), the Friedrich CP12G10 AirConditioner, the Sharp Aquos LC-32GA5U. Also, since the problem is in the Neeo, it would be better to accept responsibility for the product's shortcomings rather than say all my devices are "stupid", neither my Harmony nor URC remotes had anywhere near these many issues and frustrations setting up. This would be a lot simpler if it include a function that every $10 bargain bin remote includes...

      Thanks for your feedback!

      - I have added the KRP-500M. Can you tell me which inputs are wrong?
      - Fosmon HD1832 is added. It will appear around 7PM CET.
      - Monoprice HDX-401E is already supported.
      - Apple MacMini is also already supported.
      - Sharp LC-32GA5U is added. It will appear around 7PM CET.
      - Friedrich CP12G10: We are not sure which commands work for this device. I have created a Live IR Test. Please test the included commands and let me know which one is working. The Live IR Test works the following way:

      1. Navigate to the Settings Menu in your NEEO app.
      2. Navigate to NEEO Brain.
      3. Click on "Device Commands Support".
      4. Enter into the text field the following code: qNIS8ZuAdd
      5. Test the commands.

Regarding stupid devices - For some devices there are no discrete Power or Input commands available. This makes it impossible to reliably control the device. Sometimes we are able to add a command or macro that does act as a discrete command (e.g. PLAY for disc players as POWER ON command). But if this is not possible, we cannot do anything about this. So, it's not an issue with NEEO. The manufacturers of the devices are to blame in such a case.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure we are going to be able to control all of your devices very soon.

Andy no this is not true. It is the and do remote that is stupid. No It the devices. Just because they do not have discreet toggles does not mean they can not be controlled reliably. Neeo just needs to rwmeber the last state the device was in. Aka The art recipie used. Harmony has absolutely no issue remembering this.

As I said my first impressions thread. There is no reason my news should ask me to use the remote to turn on my sound bar manually. It should rwmeber if it is on or off and know if it needs to send the power toggle signal or not. Same with input switching. I understand not all devices offer direct input switching. But Neeo having a source button it should remember what input was used last. Then automatically send the source toggle how ever many times is needed to get to the correct source. Again harmony has no issues doing this.

Stop calling our devices "dumb" when it is fact your current software that is causing the problems.

      Jason

      Hi again,

We may have to thing about the word "dumb", agreed. Looks like some people are offended by this word.

Even if we know the status, which we do, it makes no difference. There is a big difference between a POWER TOGGLE and a POWER ON or OFF command.

POWER ON: This command always powers the device on.
POWER OFF: This command always powers the TV off.
POWER TOGGLE: This command sends on, then off, then on, then off, etc. Because of this, if the POWER TOGGLE command is not reaching the device just one time, all is out of sync. All devices would be on, except the one with the Power toggle. When we now send the recipe for powering off, the device would power on while all other devices power off. Knowing that the power toggle device was theoretically powered on helps nothing, if power toggle failed it's still not on and will still be out of sync forever.  An infrared controlled device does not communicate if it's on or off to the remote. It doesn't for NEEO and it doesn't for Harmony or any other remote. All of these problems are solved with discrete POWER ON and OFF commands. This is because of two facts. First fact - Power on always powers on, this means we can (and do) send the  Power on command multiple times to make sure it reaches the device. If we would do that with a power toggle, the device would turn on, then off, then on, etc. Everything gets out of sync. That means we can turn on a device much more reliable with a discrete POWER ON. Second fact - if power on fails anyway, not much harm is done. Next time you power it on or off, it would send the discrete power off and on command and do the correct action without getting out of sync. The only difference to Harmony here is, that they just hope that they are lucky and use the POWER TOGGLE for automation anyway.

If you must have the Power Toggle in the recipe, you can add it to it. The Power toggle screen will stay anyway. But this is not so bad. I can assure you that you'll get out of sync over time. Luckily, in such a case you can simply press the Power toggle on the first screen and all is in sync again.

So, NEEO does know if you have powered on the device. But that does't matter if you use Power toggle. The NEEO software is not stupid, but smart enough to know that your device can get out of sync because of the missing discrete Power on and Off commands - therefore it offers a "rescue" screen. Hope this explanation makes the situation clear.
Anyway, I'll see what we can do about the wording "stupid". We may have to change that.

The Fosmon HD1832 doesn't work, it displays 5 input options (as it should), but nothing happens when I test them.

The Monoprice HDX-401E says it's a "stupid" device when I add it, the test screen only gives me a power button (the device doesn't have a power function, if it has power it's on), and it doesn't give me any input selection options.

The Friedrich CP12G10 commands don't work, also it shows me a "temp up" command, which is incorrect for this unit. It uses stateful IR codes, so the remote has a display with the temp, fan status, power mode, etc., and it sends this entire state as an IR code.

When I add my Xbox One, it shows up as "PlayStation (1)" (I have already added my PS4), and doesn't give me the option of testing IR commands.

I haven't gotten to the point that the remote is at all useable yet, but it does seem to be perpetually crashed, says it's updating the project, and is entirely unresponsive. I let the battery drain over night, so I'll see if it's at all useable today. This continues to be a very frustrating experience.

      - Fosmon HD1832: I tried another attempt here. The new data will appear around 1AM CET. Please update the device

      - Monoprice HDX-401E: I have marked this as an "Always on" device. You'll have to re-add the device. Please be aware that the new data doesn't appear before 1AM CET. Do not re-add before then. There are 4 HDMI inputs included. Did I understand you correctly? When you are doing the wiring setup, no inputs are offered?

Friedrich CP12G10: I wasn't aware that this is a device with such commands. Unfortunately NEEO doesn't support this at the moment. I'm very sorry.

Xbox One: How did you add it? It sounds like the recipe is called Playstation. Which devices did you include into this recipe. If everything works fine, but the name is wrong, you can rename the recipe in the settings of the app.

Andy maybe I'm expanding my expections wrong. So I'll go by step by step what happens when I select watch tv recipie with all devices powered off.

Neeo turns on the tv. Neeo turns on cable box. Neeo turns send power toggle to sound bar (this is because i added to recipie. Not default) Neeo switches tv to HDMI 1...everythingis no on and working. But Neeo is still telling my i must toggle sound bar on. (Minor annoyance.)

Now i select power off on Neeo.

Neeo powers off tv. Neeo powers of cable box. Then Neeo asks me to send power toggle to sound bar? (Why Neeo should know it already sent power toggle to sound bar and it theoretically on) I then have to,ale t power toggle on Neeo to continue shut down process.

Now same situation on my harmony. Selecting watch tv with all we used on.

Harmony powers on tv, harmony powers on cable box, harmony powers sends sound bar powers toggle. Harmony sets tv to HDMI 1. All's working and on. With one button.

No I select power off on harmony.

Harmony powers off tv, harmony powers off cable box, harmony sends power toggle to sound bar. (Because it believes sound bar is on so knows to send toggle command)

That it. Everything is off.  No extra button pushes..

Yes I understand that things can get out of sync with the sound bar. But with good brain placement and strong IR this is very rare and happens maybe a few times a year. Basically only if someone stands in line of sight blocking IR.  (Again good placement prevents this) and when these rare times happen. Harmony has a "fix" button. Select that and it asks what device needs to be fixed and resend those commands. After that everything is back in sync and in me case will go ages without happening again if ever.

      Now another scenario. Switching recipies.

Let's say everything is off but the last recipies I used was watch tv. But no I'm going to watch a movie.

Select watch a movie recipie on Neeo.

Neeo powers on tv, powers on media device, neeo sets tv to correct input. (Let's say HDMI 4) asks me to send power toggle command to sound bar. Asks me to send input scroll to sound bar..

Same beginning situation with the harmony.

Select watch a movie on the harmony.

Harmony turns on tv, harmony powers in media device, harmony sends power toggle to sound bar. (Remember harmony considers sound bar all ready off so knows to,send this toggle) harmony sets correct input on tv. (Again HDMI 4) harmony sends input scroll to sound bar to get to correct input. (Let's say HDMI 1) because harmony knows that the last time I used the remote I used the watch tv command it knows the sound bar is currently on input D.IN . because of this it knows to send input scroll command twice to reach input HDMI 1.

Again one button operation compared to the 4 the neeo would take. For the same recipie. Plus no extra screens telling me I have a stupid device.

So no offense, but yes Neeo is the dumb device here. It does not send commands based on what it should "believe" the current status of the device is.

We would all love if every manufacture added discreet codes for everything. But that is unrealistic. So harmony makes the best with what it can, well Neeo expects the consumer do most of the automation.

And again I do agree things may rarely get out if sync. But that's pushing one thing to fix it in those rare cases with harmony compared to pushing those toggles each and every time I use the Neeo.

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to be clear about what I see a a huge issue.

Andy I added The Xbox One right after I added my PS4, I think there is a bug where the last added device doesn't get cleared out when adding a new device, I've seen similar issues when I get a button config that looks like it's from the previous device I added in the iOS app (this seems to happen after adding a "stupid" device). The the PS4 doesn't support IR control, but the Xbox supports full DVD/BluRay power/transport/etc control via IR. The "PlayStation (1)" that was added when I added the Xbox One doesn't have any controls in it.

The Pioneer KRP-500M input mappings are incorrect, this is what they are doing:

"Input Componet 1" switches to Input 2/Component

"Input HDMI 1" switches to Input 1/composite

"Input HDMI 2" switches to Input 3/Dsub-15

"Input HDMI 3" switches to Input4/DVI

"Input HDMI 4" switches to Input 5/HDMI 1

There are a bunch of other inputs listed in the Neeo app, none of which are on the monitor, and none of them are able to switch to Input 6/HDMI 2, the one input that I actually need. Also, when I added the monitor to the home screen, and went into it's interface, the app seems to think this is a regular TV with a tuner and speakers, it dosn't have those.

      ----

The Monoprice HDX-401E shows "channel down" and "channel up" in the app, but the device has 4 discreet inputs.

      ----

The Fosmon 1832 seems to work now, thanks.

      ----

      My Denon AVR-3808:

      "Input Aux 1" selects SAT

      "Input 3" selects HDP

      "Input 4" selects SAT

      "Input 7" selects V.AUX

      "Input 11" selects DVD

      "Input 12" selects DVR

      "Input 23" selects DVR

      "Input 32" selects TV/CBL

There are many, many more inputs in the app for this device, but none of them seem to do anything. When I add the AVR to my remote, there are multiple pages of inputs, but I can't scroll down, and the pagination swipe works less than 25% of the time. There dosn't appear to be any way to access the addition features of the resceiver, such as surround mode and night mode.

      ----

I also tested switching off one of the recipes, (the Xbox, which now powers on the Xbox, thanks), when I did this, it switched off my AVR and monitor, but left the Xbox on.

If I only have the remote controlling one room, it would be nice not to have to tap that one button ever time, and just default into it.

      Hi again,

Firstly, we don't want to say that the handling of stupid devices is 100% perfect. There may be some improvements in the future and feedback from our users is of course very welcome.

Regarding powering off - If have you added power toggle to the power off recipe, look at the power toggle screen as a rescue screen - or how Harmony calls it, "The help or fix button".

Regarding switching recipes - NEEO knows that it not has to send a power command in such a case if there are discrete power commands involved. NEEO could know that when sending power toggle. But we decided not to do that because there will be the "rescue" screen anyway.

Anyway, I think in the end it's all about being able to customize the UI. For some users, our solution is just right. Maybe they don't know about the positioning or have one of these devices with a very bad IR receiver. You name it. It can be the correct solution. But there are users like you or me that have set up their stupid devices in a way where the rescue screens are annoying and a power shortcut for the rare cases something fails anyway will be sufficient. For these people should be an option in there that allows to hide the Power and Input screen. All I can say is that I can assure you that the software is not "as it is". We are going to constantly improve it and will add new features. We may also add some customization options in the future. I hope, at the moment, you can live with having to swipe a screen to the left.

Additionally, you have mentioned that Harmony does toggle the input command. As Patrick wrote, we want to find workarounds that are imitating and working as discrete power and input commands. Maybe we can find a solution to make your device smart. A couple of questions:

      - If you press INPUT SCROLL, does there open an input menu?
      - If yes, does it always start at the same menu step?
      - More specific; let's assume there are 4 HDMI inputs, if we would send 3x the same command, e.g. CURSOR DOWN, would it end up on HDMI 3 always - no matter on what input you where the last time or right now?

You may see what I want to achieve. I want to find a way to switch to the correct input via a macro. But this has to be a solution that will work in any case. Any idea? If we find a solution, we can discretely switch inputs and could get rid of the input scroll screen for your soundbar.

Also, is there any button besides the power button on the original remote that powers on the device?

      Pionner KRP-500M:

"Pioneer GENERIC_TV_1_MOST MODELS" only turns the monitor off and on, no other functions appear work.

I also tested with "Pioneer GENERIC_TV_2_ELITE MODELS" (as this monitor is essentially a Pioneer Elite w/o a tuner or speakers), and had the same result.

The IR config for the Pionner KRP-500M was at least able to change inputs (if incorrectly mapped, and not to the one I need), and navigate the display config menus.

      ----

      Monoprice HDX-401E:

      No, they don't do anything.

      ----

      Denon AVR-3808:

The input mapping has changed, but it's still wrong, now:

      "INPUT CABLE/SATELLITE" selects SAT

      "INPUT 3" selects HDP

      "INPUT 4" selects SAT

      "INPUT 7" selects V.AUX

      "INPUT 11" selects DVD

      "INPUT 12" selects DVR

      "INPUT 23" selects DVR

      "INPUT 32" selects TV/CBL

When added as shortcuts, none of the additional features (night mode, surround mode, pure mode, etc) work.

      ----

      Xbox One:

Power off, if on a shortcut screen, works

      -----

I'd like to re-iterate that all of these issues could have been worked-around if the remote had a learning ability, now to change anything it seems I need to wait for you to make the changes, and then I need to wait for some delay (why?) for it to propagate though your servers before I can attempt again.

Andy first. Thank you for the reply. All help is appreciated.

My issue is not the "stupid screen" that's a minor annoyance. My problem lies within Neeo not sending the correct toggles. Neeo is supooes ti be a hone automation solution, and me having to press other key is not automation.

I have no problem swiping left to get past that screen.

When Setting up my harmony it specifically asked me to set my sound bar to a specific input. It then warned me that if I used any other remote it would cause things to be out of sync.

It does this so it can know what input was last used and how many times to send the toggle input scroll to select the correct input.

Well Neeo has a "fix" screen. It is not so much a fix as a manual operation.

To switch to the correct input via macro Neeo needs to remeber the last input used. Than it can calculate how many toggle input signals to send to get to the correct input.

On top of that. Well I can currently add a power toggle to my watch tv macro. I can not add a power toggle to the all lower off macro. Which means Neeo gets out of sync the moment I power all devices off.

As far as I can tell there is no discreet power on/off inputs for my sound bar. Not is there direct input switching codes available. And as much as I appreciate what Neeo is trying to do. A small startup as Neeo has little chance to influence Samsung to change their codes. So I expect a remote to make the best out of the situation.

Well I plan to hold on to my Neeo, if the software continues to lack any kind of A.I. It is basically a down grass to my harmony and unusable.

Harmony has a work around. You just do not want to implement it.

My harmony knows the last macro used. Therefore it knows how many input scroll to send to the device to set correct input.

Truthfully I am stunned that the beta team and Neeo thought this would be okay.

I'll admit. If I had no "stupid" devices. Neeo would.probably okay. But that's not the real world.

It astounding that Neeo does not automatically turn on, or off my sound bar via macro. And instead asked me to do it manually. I am truthfully dumbfounded how a hone automation remote offers veryittle automation.

I really did have expectations and hopes for Neeo. But in its current configuration it does not live up to promises and expectations.

We have removed these commands. The new data appears around 1PM. Please update your device.

      Denon AVR-3808:

We have not made any changes to the generic inputs. The corrected inputs are included to your actual device. Please don't use any of the numbered inputs.

Regarding the modes - These are the official commands for all Denon AVR-series devices. But I'll try to find another set.

      Xbox One:

This means that the command is working. The exactly same one is sent via the recipe. Can you send me a screenshot of the recipe steps?

Regarding the learning feature - As already stated, the learning feature will be added. The hardware is already able to learn commands. Just not yet the software.

      Hi again,

You can add the POWER TOGGLE to the "Off recipe". Navigate to the recipe list in the settings, click on the recipe that should contain the power command. There you have a "When powered off" option. You can add this step there.

Andy thanks for the tip on adding the power off command. Unfourtnalty this still does not solve the issue. If I add power toggle to any command will just cause the remote to get confused. For instance if I switch from tv recipie to movie recipie. (And have manually set inputs)  then switch back to tv recipie. It will powers the sound bar off because it sends the power toggle command. The remote should be smart enough to know if it needs to send that command.

I'm at a loss as to how this was over looked and how it was expected to work.

Also I just tried setting my Samsung tv. Js9500 to input HDMI 4. With Neeo and unsurprisingly it does not work even though Neeo lists it as a option.

Thks Because like the sound bar. Samsung does not have a direct code to switch to input HDMI 4. This has been a known issue with Samsung and one they are unlikely to fix. So I would think Neeo, like harmony would be able to work around. But again until Neeo is smart enough to remember the last state of the system and send commands based in that then for me it is hard to call this a fully functional remote.

Andy I have an EU Denon AVR-3808 receiver and the v117 code sets doesn’t work correctly... I have to use a mixture of the drivers to get my setup working half decently:

      • Denon AVR-3808A for discrete power on/off and a few other commands and inputs (though named wrongly).
      • Denon Generic_AVR_1 for volume controls (I would have thought they would be the same for the “official” code set) and some inputs.

But I’m still missing codes for a few inputs and commands that I had on my previous universal remote.

Also it would be nice to make the zone 1 and 2 device drivers be able to “integrate intelligently”, by turning of the receiver if zone 2 is turned off and zone 1 is already off. And if zone 1 is off when turning zone 2 on, it would start by turning on the receiver, then zone 2, then turning off zone 1. Saves power :)

Finally it would be super awesome with support for the IP driver with live feedback (I.e. for volume level).

Anything I can do to help you help me?

As you described, we want to have our device driver team check on the commands first to bring highly reliably commands to other users. We are working on that, shouldn't be to far away.

Patrick  Thank you for your continued support. As of now there is no timeline to release IR learning functionality? I have a Pioneer 801 AVR and almost all the inputs are wrong. I also do not have a "options" button for my Sony XBR55X850B (2014) which would allow me to adjust ALL the picture settings. This seems to me like a big oversight for this particular devise. IR learning would save a lot of time. On almost all my devises there is one or two issues which make flawless integration so close but yet so far. Please help. I have also started a Sony XBR55X850B support thread and sent an email to tech support. No response yet. Any future plans to support Emotionlite Bias Lighting? One of the most popular out there. Any workarounds you can suggest in the mean time?

  • Honestly without some kind of IR learning / custom mapping your support team will never get to the bottom if it. To give you an idea, presently to get my setup working i had to add my TV (an old samsung model) as 2 devices. One of them because the power switching was working, the other for switching to _some_ input (other failed).

Today i got an email saying the mapping was updated. I updated the brain all happy this is nearing the end of my _yet one more remote_ life only to discover that either the mapping are now completely useless.

Having a IR learning, i would've mapped the damned thing myself by now as I don't expect you guys to have all the remotes to test out my stuff. This doubly frustrating because i'm still using a 10 years generic yamaha receiver's remote with a custom IR code mapping that... well worked out of the box.

So for now my neeo is pretty much a very pretty volume controller...

The Live IR Test works the following way:

      1. Navigate to the Settings Menu in your NEEO app.
      2. Navigate to NEEO Brain.
      3. Click on "Device Commands Support".
      4. Enter into the text field the following code: y7B8eNTfwF

The screenshots are from the the IR Test feature. The INPUT TUNER command is added to your actual device. The test is for testing purposes only and doesn't necessarily contain the same commands.

Start the recipe, swipe to the left until you reach the short cut screen and add the command from there.

Mark Conner That is strange. If you add these two commands to your favorites, can you switch in between the inputs? Did you test that by directly switching in between the recipes, or did you turn them off in between?

Then this could be related to a delay which is too short.

as the IR learning doesn't work yet: can you add the following device: Grimm Audio LS1/LS1 remote.

Volume up/down is most important, change of source nice to have.

    Thanks a bunch!

Andy Hi, any success so far? The code you guys provided did not work, and so far my NEEO is mostly a frustrating paperweight of high hardware quality...

Volume up/down + mute via the remote's hardware keys and ideally input change would be very much appreciated, especially as we've been talking about this months ago...

      1. Navigate to the Settings Menu in your NEEO app.
      2. Navigate to NEEO Brain.
      3. Click on "Device Commands Support".
      4. Enter into the text field the following code: 8xQeiWVEfM

Absolutely insane that NEEO won't enable a function that my harmony support in 2002.  This is on top of their inane decision to not include IR transmitters on the remote.  Now I have to spend hundreds on IR over cat5 adapters or keep a separate remote in every room to control the TV and soundbar.  Three years of hype has turned into the biggest letdown I've ever experienced with a product.

      Dear Alan,

You did already request the HDTV Supply HDTVMT080814 in a support ticket a couple of hours ago. Please check your mail box and you'll see that we have added this device around 4 hours ago immediately after it was requested. But be aware that device updates are forwarded only 4 times a day. Because of this, the device will not appear before 1PM CET.  In case you have any issue controlling this device let me know. In such a case we'll of course be happy to do our best to fix it as quickly as possible.

      Thanks!

Right now, infrared lights are not very nice integrated. That will change in the future. At the moment, you'll have to add all the commands to an existing recipe and to the shortcut screen. Also, you can create a on and and off recipe that just includes the on and off commands. But there are not yet any widgets available.

  • Patrick , so just got my NEEO delivered and try to set it up - failing at the basic components. Directed to ask to add device support directs me to Planet NEEO. I strongly suggest to create a dedicated section,  even better take the already entered model number and automatically upload it to create a request database - the current process is not really as "easy and quick" as promised in the prologue. Also I's suggest a bug report section.

Anyway, meanwhile , could you please ad support for:

    Elipson Planet LW

    onto the quirks:

    - Toshiba (46)ZF355D Try and error made me finally ind the 40ZF355D, which seems to work, so I'd strongly recommend make it generic as Tosba ZF355D as the model family is called and offer this when something closely matching is entered.

    - Samsung BD-F6900 is listed but the codes do definitely NOT work, also, Neeo seems not to be awre that this is BluRay and Set-Top/tuner in one device and logically offers this as a possible Tuner  (one of your competing products as Raphael has called it do so, btw.)

In general I think IR learning is a crucial feature for a unit that should (also) be considered an universal remote - until then I'd suggest go the route of aforementioned competing products as they have set a benchmark and expectations in regards of UX. Possibly just add a selection of generic codes (like Toschiba 1,2,3,4..., Samsung 1,2,3,4...) users can test unitl they find the one that is suited - after all manufacturers do not reinvent the wheel in every generation but rather extend on an existing stack of commands.

Network bridging is not working intuitively - NEEO only supports 2.4 (thought I recall support for 5G in the campaign?) the phone (app required for setup? Why not through the remote?) is on 5G in the same Network and does not find  the Brain until you search for IP. Also it would be good if one could do the Setup wirelessly without Ethernet connection - one could easily enter WiFi credentials through the remote or (if available BT Smart/LE on the app).

At least you should point that out more clrearly with a sticker on the Brain - I tucked the cables nicely behind the cupboard until I found out I mandatory need to the setup (and even complete at least the TV setup to pass on to the home screen) via app.....

I think the initial sequence clearly should be: Connect NEEO to network, pass an automated update, enter the home screenand only then add devices to control via options menu.

Oh, and why on earth would my PlanetNEEO account not be accepted as NEEO log in, even more so, when the app automatically takes me there and logs me in?????

The haptics of NEEO definitely deserve a better UX - the current implementation puts that excellent appearance and experience when unboxing to shame.

      Many thanks for your feedback!

I'm answering here all issues concerning the infrared controlled devices. I'm sure Patrick will comment the rest of your feedback very soon.

46ZF355D - We have just added your exact model. It will appear 9AM CET.

BD-F6900 - You are right. We should offer all parts (E.g. Blu-ray and Se top box part) -  and we'll do. Usually this is already implemented. But yes, something is wrong with this driver. We'll fix this ASAP. I'll let you know as soon as this is done.

    • Andy thanks for the quick response, looking forward to the fix for Samsung.

Do you see a chance to add my Elipson Planet LW (no stupd devices, keys are on, off, vol up, vol down- and then there are BWD,Play/pause, FWD, which to me don't make much sense for speakers, anyway.

As mentioned I think it would make sense to either introduce model families (ZF355D in that particular case) or let one search for the remote. All devices of one manufacturer's generation tipically would share the same remote and the model no (CT-90287 on the Toshiba, AK59-00164A for the Samsung in my case) is always readily available on the remote (and thus even easier available than the exact device model on the backside of unit). This would also help to get quirks in keystrokes contributed by users as per my other post -one doesn't neccessarily have the exact device - just the remote.

Klaus Grosser I think your device specific issues have been covered by  Andy already.

IR Learning will be coming, the technical needs for that are onboard of the NEEO Brain. Until then we are adding and fixing the devices for you.

Concerning your WiFi issues: I don't remember NEEO ever having advertised 5GHz support. 5GHz is not always the right way to go, just because it is "new" doesn't mean it is better. For example, 5GHz does have a higher throughput, but it has less range, since we don't need to transfer big amounts of data, there would not be any profits from switching to 5GHz. There should be no need to manually enter the IP of your NEEO Brain, even when the Brain is running on 2.4GHz and your phone is running on 5GHz, as long as the networks are connected. Do you have to enter that IP each time you need to use the app?

We do like your ideas for the initial setup, I have forwarded these. Especially running the automated setup.

You are totally right, the Planet NEEO and the NEEO accounts are not yet connected. We are looking into this already. We do think though that we can put our limited resources into features which you will enjoy much more in daily usage that this. This is the reason why we have not given this a high priority.

      Reply Like 1
    • Patrick thanks for getting back.

Yes, @Andy said he will look into my issues and currently I am waiting for my BR-F6900 getting fixed and my Elipson Planet LW added which will be the prerequisite to start witht any recipes as Amazon FireTV is not supported in the current status yet either and Hue integration with no support of scenes or Hue tap triggered recipes/device control too basic for practical use for me.

All this had made me completely wind back and decided to stick with my current setup of Harmony and app based light control.

Mind and expectations readjusted and a workable fallback solution I am now able to lean back relaxed and wait what your team will introduce when and how. Thus I can only offer testing anything you consider beta or even alpha as I am not afraid of breaking anything.

You also may have noted that I already made some suggestions/feature requests I consider benefitial for NEEO to become what it deserves to be - the flexible and powerful center of your smart home. This involves initial setup but also customasations to the GUI - even if the Brain acts as a communication hub between multible gateways and systems that may be present or not (and for the time being not as a centralized gateway that tlks different protocols): the appearance still makes it a remote and as such it will be accepted by it's users.

Now, a remote is something that acts exactly NOT as a home automisation system but in parallel - it is rather an interface to make adjustments to automized schedules and or predifined recipes. Even if your "home cinema" recipe may be perfect to start you may want to interact and make adjustments. I think this is something VERY important to keep in mind when looking at the future development of NEEO and picking priorities.

I totally appreciate the efforts of your team to jump in with quick support but again am also afraid  will  hardly comply to scale with a larger customerbase, leave alone have ressources left to make considerabl imrovements to the UX being clogged by chasing the rabbit.

Which is why I think it important to make the neccessary adjustments to the UX and embrace your backing community now to leverage NEEO to a status it is really suited and ready for the mass market.

The 5GHz is one part of that puzzle: I completely understand the pros and cons of 2.4 against 5 and vice versa and I totally agree to a good range is of higher importance than data throughput in regard to NEEO and 5GHzs is not needed - The issue I was running into however was just that my tablet  set to 5G exclusively as I use this to stream videos in FHD  did not recognize the Brain automatically when I disconnected it from the router on initial setup until i trigerred the IP detection - I feel IP detection should simply be default  to avoid this.

    • Andy Thanks, noticed, deleted, added both, and trying my first recipes.

Next question arrives - funnily it didn't give the warning before but now I stumble into that stupid device thing with the BD-F6900 (which I understand it is).

I think I got the thinking behind it right now - bjust the logic isn't though all the way through.

One should simply be able to create a "start recipe" and "stop recipe" inone recipe? I mean If I start the "TV" recipe (which basically just powers on the TV) I get an active recipe and a power off top of the screen - with combined recipes (especially when containing stupid devices) it would be nice to get the same "power off as well" this would require to determine the steps required to start and to stop a recipe (hence, with a stupid device another "power toggle").

Now I have to switch down TV (which is NOT stupid) and tuner separately - not very comfortable.

    • Bryan Eickelberg true. Accessories should be able to create a recipe screen to. Or via custom recipes or whatever. Until then there are some workarounds.

one is add a light device through the SDK without any buttons or sliders. This will create the light device recipe where you can place the shortcut.

an other option is to create a new room. Add a TV brand you don’t own and A game console. Show the game console while hiding the TV(needed for virtual wieringen) game console doesn’t typically show buttons onscreen so ideally for adding only custom shortcuts.

for now I believe these are usable workarounds. Not great but does the job.

    • Bryan Eickelberg and, AFAIK IR learning is not confirmed as a feature to be released soon™. All we have been told is the hardware was basically ready for this advertised feature, very much like Bluetooth and Zigbee. With the latter Raphael already put up his argumentation canon  - like he did with IR learning The official reasoning still goes, building up a database is the better way to go (for NEEO at least).

As per my information FireTV control will initially/only (select your wording of choice) come over HDMI CEC, not BT, which, from a objective point of view would make so much more sense. Which again tells me they are still lagging way behind on the firmware and makes me wonder which firmware the test lab might have been provided with to verify compliance of the IEEE 802.15 transceiver. Anyway, I wouldn't hold my breath for IR learning and deal with the compromises available.

Speaking of which - some devices are only hidden but can made available as "device recipies" whcih make them controllable without TV or AVR.
