Release Notes "Even Robots Need Blankets" (Release 0.51.13)

Friends,

The next big update for your NEEO is ready. We strongly recommend updating since this release does not only bring a load of new features to your NEEO, it also includes major stability improvements to make your daily NEEO experience even better.

With every release we are supporting more devices, Raphael wrote about these freshly merged integrations in separate threads, make sure to check them out:

Wemo and MyStrom Support

Nvidia Shield TV - HDMI CEC Driver

Let me elaborate a few more noteworthy features deserving some attention here. You can find the full list of changes for this release further down in this thread.

Virtual Switches

If you search for "virtual" in the device adding menu in the NEEO App you will find a device called "NEEO Virtual Switch". Using this device you can add a limited number of virtual switches.

There are so many use cases that we prepared a thread with a few examples. This way we all have a separate thread where we can share ideas and question.

NEEO Cranium Driver

As a proof of concept, we added a device named "NEEO Cranium". NEEO Cranium is capable of some pretty cool stuff on your NEEO Brain itself: For instance, it allows rebooting your NEEO Brain directly from your NEEO Remote or control of your NEEO Brain's LED.

Let's say the LED on your NEEO Brain is annoying you when watching TV in a dark room. In the NEEO App, add the NEEO Cranium device. After that, change the TV recipe and include the step "Turn OFF LED" from the NEEO Cranium device in the ON-part, in the OFF-part include the step "Turn ON LED". The LED will now turn off when you start your TV recipe and turn on again once you shut the recipe down.

These and more options come with NEEO Cranium - make sure to check it out. (PS: Sorry for the strange name of that driver - this is what happens if you let developers pick the name ;))

Change room

Sounds simple but it's important: You can now move devices in between rooms. This especially comes in handy when adding devices from a primary Z-Wave controller, during that process you can directly assign them no rooms now.

Stability Improvements

Our engineering and developing team managed to further improve how threads are handled. In other words: Much more stability on your NEEO Remote. This is subtle and in the background but a very important improvement.

We also came up with some great WiFi improvements after doing a bunch of on-site analyses which resulted in a number of changes.

That being said, there is a mind-blowing new easter egg - but I won't tell you more about that as I know you'll figure that out yourself 😉

Also, check out the Known Issues for this release.

How to update your NEEO

Pretty simple as announced in release 0.50.6: Simply wait for the NEEO Remote or the NEEO App to show the red exclamation mark, then click on it and follow the instructions. If you are not running 0.50.6 yet, follow this little guide to update via the NEEO App.

The firmware release is not published at the very same moment in all regions, so be aware that it may take up to 24 hours until your NEEO Brain shows the update, so give it some time.

  • Thanks for the new release - I've waited for quite a few of these!

    Patrick said:
    Improved backlight driver

Though I'll be testing this in 5 or so hours myself, could you elaborate: does this mean we now get a control to handle brightness of the backlight? Or does it mean something else, e.g. the motion detection - for example my remote turns on if I put a glass down on my table, other times it doesn't react until I almost shake it.

Really hoping it means we have a brightness control slider somewhere - maybe even one that works like the LED control you describe that can be included in recipes, because that sounds just awesome. That LED, and the very bright backlight, would be the two most annoying things I can put my finger on.

  • Can we presume the 'easter egg' in this release is that the virtual switches can be used in some way for Sonos grouping/ungrouping of speakers?  I'm waiting to set my NEEO up again in my new house (haven't used it since I received it last year to be fair) and if it has Sonos working like the Sonos app, then it'll at least motivate me to get it out again.

  • Does that update add native support for the Sonos Beam by chance?

  • Got this after update (went to home screen) and then back to the app (not closing it i think) A click on OK fixed it; you might want to consider 'auto-retry' this.

  • Please add a "wizard" feature to help fix re-sync the devices with the recipe when the devices becomes unsync. For example, i turn off the power and all devices is turned off except the TV. The "wizard" will go through a series of yes and no questions for each step of the recipe to verify each device is sync properly with the recipe. I can answer "no" to TV is not turn off. Then confirm and the "wizard" will turn off the TV and registered this into the recipe. Now the recipe is all synced up again.

  • Patrick Raphael When are we getting the ability to have unused devices powered off when switching to another function?  Such as watching a movie with my surround sound and 4K player then going back to just watching regular TV.  I'll be honest, early kickstarter, waited my time for this product to deliver and it just collects dust at my house unfortunately.  I still use my 8+ year old Logitech remote.  This is a huge feature that I know a lot of us have been asking for but I don't see anything being done when it seems like such a simple feature to achieve.

    Reply Like
    • Dave Overbaugh you can do this since the start. An Example is that if i watch TV then my other equipement including my AVR is turned off. If I listen to the radio then the TV goes off.

Just edit the recipes to include power commands. It’s not as simple as with Logitech but in return it’s more configurable.

I would love to see a smarter then logitech solution for NEEO though. ar atleas similar. as it does save some configuration time.

      Niels de Klerk

Either I just did not understand NEEO yet or it is simply because of missing or incomplete documentation that I do not know how to set it up. It is still illogical for me that I have to create several identical devices just to be able to use a recipe with the same device several times. In my case e.g. a sat receiver, which is connected once on the output TV and on the output screen of the amplifier.

I also have not managed to switch from TV to screen. If that should work then I would be glad somebody would explain it to me.  At the time I have the behaviour of NEEO that I have to end only one recipe (TV) so that NEEO then turns off everything only to turn everything back on then immediately because I change to the output screen. I find this not very user-friendly and is one of the reasons why I do not use the device in daily use but at most try it out if it is now better since the last update, until you can use the device really in everyday life.

If it is somehow possible to switch from one output to the other without the NEEO turning off and on again, I would be grateful for an instruction how to set it up.

    • Fonzo Could you open a new post and tag me or tag me in a post if you allready created one? I think i can help you reach your goal. given with some workarounds as having two audio sources is something that have to be solved in the firmware. (one of the known issues) but an alternative can be equally good.

What i need to know is  how your setup looks like in regards to cabeling. so if you could describe your setup and how everything is connected i can help out. no problem

Niels de Klerk You can find a thread to this topic here. I also added a picture of the setup. The only thing I want to do is to switch from TV to screen without the NEEO switching on/off all devices, because the connected devices are the same, even the input is the same only the output is different between these to recepies. This is normal stuff with other remote systems, but a have not found a way to solve this with NEEO.

  • Nice, but what's about the basic configuration (imo we are fare away from "fully customizing"):

    - Change Names of Icons
    - Change Icons

It also would be nice to have a clock between the charching-level and the connection-signal (As even the cheapest phone has since 10 years ;-)

Please don't say: you can open Idea-voting. This is waste of time ...

Andreas Coradi I agree. It's absurd that Neeo still doesn't have ability to change the names assigned to soft buttons, which should have been a standard capability since day one.

I have some pages with shortcuts that all start with the exact same device name (which all get truncated to the exact same displayed text), and they have the same icons. There's no way to distinguish which is which except by pressing and seeing what happens.

  • Nice to have a new firmware, but agree that some basic customizing functions would be good as well.

Also I had to re-pair both my remotes (and can‘t get MySwitch to be used, as the FW required is only for V2......

  • I'm excited to try this!

Was there a fix for the issue where the remote or phone app does not remember the active recipe if you back out? I have that issue where it doesn't show an active device/recipe and i have to start everything up again to get the controls back.  I think there was a solution I can try but i lost that post.

  • Turned my NEEO brain and remote on for the first time in 4 months, installed the update, found out that the control of my 1st gen Fire TV still works like 💩, unplugged everything and put it back in the box, which is by far the best thing of the whole product. Hope you had put so much effort into the software and the promised features of the product as you did with the packaging. I'm done 😞

    • Dirk Barchmann Did you got in contact with Jeff to resolve the issue?

Jeff commented on your post 4 months ago:

Dirk Barchmann Hi Dirk! Can you email support@neeo.com ? Would love to jump on a call with you.

If you use the TV remote to controll the fireTV, do you have a similar delay?

  • So, after the update (which takes like Windows 10 installation in time), now I don't have selected activity on the top of the remote. That's all. Still can't control my Nexus player, still no international languages support. So it's just became worse :-)

Dirk Barchmann Couldn't say better, I love the box, although it's hard to open :D

    • Victor if a recipe doesn’t show as active then that’s probably because your recipe isn’t correct. Missing power commands correctly set for instance.

    • Niels de Klerk It's not temporary.  If I turn off the recipe, I always have to start it twice for it to be displayed on the main screen.

    • Frederik Vancoillie then it’s probably a bug. I couldn’t reproduce that myself but as you shared your hostname maybe the devs can find something in logging.

  • Something is broken in regards to sensor values. It looks like the toggle event of my fibaro wallplugs is no longer recognized. But the power value. Dunno if that is only for those devices or a general issue. Also I found that the toggles on the remote are updating their state kinda wierd. You turn an lifx off or on and the toggle goes back and forth before it remains in the actual state. It did that before but now it seems to be worse. Going to try few more things tomorrow

I'm guessing it's something to do with the way events are handled on the remote? I remember previously any type of movement from the remote would result in the driver updating, but I don't see it doing that anymore.

Still hoping to see more frequent Updates, but i think therefor the firmware must be stablelized at first Point. Afterwards it will be more frequent to add something or changes are not so needed that they need to dig to deep into the code (if you understand).
